Suspended & Moveable Schoolhouse Globe Complete w/ Rare Moon Nystrom Antique
H i! Please consider this schoolhouse Terrestrial globe. Complete with heavy moon(measures 3+" and weighing 8# 10 oz) cording and pulleys. The cartouche is as seen and I am unable to date this globe, with information- W& A.K. Johnston- Edinburch- A.J. Nystrom& Co. Chicago" I believe that it is probably turn of the century- maybe into the 20's. Those of you in the know can probably date it if you take a close look at Africa- which is pictured. If not, please ask for countries and I will answer you promptly. I understand that the globe would have hung in the classroom with the moon sitting on the teachers desk. The moon(VERY HEAVY) is a counterweight/counterbalance and when, at some distance from the globe, raised, keeps the globe in place where students and teacher alike may study it. Then when geography is over, the ... moremoon is lowered onto the desk, raising the earth to where it is safe and out of harms way. Which is probably why this particular globe is in very good to excellent condition. There is a cast iron top which allows the earth to shift left and right. There is no missing paper on the globe and only a couple of small rubs. The globe itself measures 12" with the metal surround additional. Questions are welcomed and promptly answered. Please view the photos as I consider them to be an integral part of my description. The moon is VERY heavy and will be shipped separately. Which accounts for the higher shipping cost. I believe that I should insure each boxe for the sale price- instead of 1/2 per each box, but this is negotiable at the end of the auction per the new owners wishes.

Hello.up for auction today. Vintage NYSTROM 12" Sculptural Relief Globe. The relief is very high& distinctive. Gyro disc with bi-directional axis. Enables the globe to pivot to any angle. Aluminium metal base. Globe is in very nice condition, with only a couple small areas of wear, see last pictures, wear around edge Antarctica, last picutre has arrows pointing to wear in the ocean. CIRCA 1968 – NYSTROM EDUCATIONAL TILT AXIS GLOBE; CLASSROOM 16-INCH MODEL
If you attended grade school within the past 45 years. You'll remember having a globe like this in your classroom. You're viewing a vintage tilt model Nystrom 16-inch Nystrom Pictorial Relief Globe. It was published at the height of the cold war(circa 1968) when Russia was still known as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic(USSR) The Publisher. A.J. Nystrom& Co. Chicago, Illinois is over 100 years old and the oldest publisher of maps and globes for classroom use in the United States. The company began on April 1, 1903 shortly after Albert J. Nystrom became the exclusive agent for W. A. K. Johnson, school map publishers of Edinburgh, Scotland. Nystrom personally acted as president and managing editor for his company until 1923 and continued on as president until 1983. The Company started off with three people; an office worker, ... morea map mounter and Mr. Nystrom himself. The company moved locations three times as it grew rapidly in its early days before finally purchasing the current Elston Ave. Chicago location in 1928. The plant expanded for the third and final time in 1968 when this globe was published. Two years before this globe's publishing date, A.J. Nystrom& Co. became a subsidiary of Field Enterprises, who also owned World Book, television and radio stations, and two Chicago newspapers. The Details. As you might imagine. This Nystrom globe has seen some use over it's 45 year history, but it's in very good shape considering. There are a few small areas of minor scratches, cuts, scuffs and slight abrasions, and a minor dent in the Southern part of the Atlantic Ocean. The metal tilt axis stand also shows signs of handling and a little rust on the hardware, but again, no dents. The globe was apparently kept in an indoor environment during it's schoolroom career. On a scale from 1 to 10, 10 being best, I would rate the condition of this globe a 7. The nostalgic value of this globe is what really makes this an item of intrigue as a slice of genuine Americana. But it has worn wear issues I've pretty much showed all the bad parts Also the round circle brace touches a little on globe itself. I put some pressure on it and it helped. Nystrom& Co. there is no date that I can see BUT a freind said this was either from the late 1800's or early 1900's. Even if there is some damage to globe its NOT falling apart. It comes with the gyro-disc stand. Over-all the globe is in great condition from having come from a school environment. It may have a little fading from sitting in the sun and one or two small scrapes but nothing that is very noticeable. For shipping the globe will be taken off the stand but it is only two washers and one lock nut that holds it in place so this should for the buyer to reassemble. Antique Vintage 12 inch Terrestrial globe NO BASE Johnston Nystrom Suspension?
Here's a great old paper covered terrestrial globe. Made by W& AK Johnston and distributed by A J Nystrom. Probably dates from the 1910s through 1920's. Measures 12" wide(globe only without ring) and has a cast iron ring. The globe is paper over tin. The condition is good for the age with one 2" dent on South America(will add photo) and some paper finish wear. No damage to cast iron. This was probably a table or floor model globe but is missing its cast iron base. A great opportunity to bring 2 lost pieces together and create a very valuable globe. A fellow Ebayer questioned whether this was actually a"suspension globe" that was designed to be suspended by a pulley and rope- another rare piece. No international shipping.

It stands about 16" tall, on a metal base that measures 9" on each side. The globe rotates pretty freely(screw could use a tightening) The metal parts have some light rust and paint scratches. Base is missing one red plastic foot cover. The globe itself looks as if it were used in a classroom. As there is a bit of blue of paint, some pencil marks, one black grease pencil mark, ... moreand various spots on it, including a bit on insect damage, where the color paper is gone, and the white backing shows through. The globe's colors are olive green(ocean) Orange, cheddar, and kelly green. Very attractive, and a cool piece for the person who doesn't mind the signs of a long and useful life-span!
