Tellurion 70 cm x 45 cm x 25 cm. 12 cm globe diameter, Stockholm(instrument) and Berlin(globe) circa 1885 We are pleased to offer this scarce example of a finely crafted 19th century Swedish tellurion sold with a German language globe from the renowned Berlin globemaker Ernst Schotte by the Stockholm firm of. A supplier of educational and scientific equipment. The Schotte firm began making globes as early as 1855, eventually developing a product line ranging from a 2.5 cm toy globe to a 48 cm library globe; this 12 cm globe was used on tellurions sold by the Schotte firm in Germany. However, for this tellurion the shaft driven mechanism itself is not from the Schotte firm but was made for Svanström& Rylander by the Swedish scientific instrument manufacturer Fr. J. Berg, producers of the first Morse telegraph in Sweden, with a Stockholm- ... moreUppsala line starting in 1853. The construction is more robust than Schotte or Felkl tellurions of the era- there can be no better testament to the workmanship of the Berg firm than the fact that the instrument remains in good working order. This example of the tellurion is unusual that instead of the typical candle light source. A handsome kerosene lamp with glass chimney is installed. The instrument is mounted on a robust black cast iron base with" Svanström& Rylander Stockholm" presented in raised letters and the rotation crank features an attractive wooden handle. The exceptionally well-preserved German language globe provides a fascinating snapshot of the world in the Otto von Bismarck era. Most likely dating from the year when Karl Benz was producing his first"Patent-Motorwagen" and Gottlieb Daimler and Wilehlm Maybach were producing their"Reitwagen" motorcycle. Zalesskaya, Moscow, circa 1870 We are pleased to offer this extremely scarce example of a 19th century terrestrial globe manufactured by the Russian publisher and educational supply firm operated under the name of Anastasia Karlovna Zalesskaya. Unlike other Russian globes of the period that were imported from Western Europe for sale under publisher names in Russia(e.g. Pristell. Elfimov) the Zalesskaya factory actually produced their own globes. Indeed, Shiela Fitzpatrick in her 1970 work The Commissariat of Enlightenment: Soviet Organization of Education and the Arts under Lunacharsky notes that the firm was described ... moreas a"globe factory" as late as 1921. In the early part of that year the Soviet agency NARKOMPROS(an acronym for the"People's Commissariat for Enlightenment" which was charged the administration of public education issued an edict quoted by Fitzpatrick as"transferring the former Zalesskaya globe factory to the control of NARKOMPROS" thus bringing to an official end to the company as a privately held firm. The scarcity of the globe is such that until one example of the globe came to light in Vienna in the 1960s its existence was unknown to scholars. A brief study of the Vienna example titled" An Unknown Russian Globe by A.K. Zalesskaja" German spelling of the name. Including the Roman numerals around the sundial portion and the feathers of the arrows. The brass circles without the arrow running through them are moveable. Large Philips Antique Standard Globe Wooden Base with Compass 42.5"D 21.5" tall Description: Large Antique Philips Standard Globe C1900 A great old and collectible piece but in need of repair. As you can see the globe needs fixing to the base. Should be a fairly easy job if you know what you are doing. The globe is papier mache and obviously has had some wear and knocks over the years but still a great piece. I have included lots of pictures so please supersize them to judge the condition for yourself. The globe measures approximately 42.5" in diameter. Stands approximately 21.5" tall with base. The base is probably mahogany and has a little compass within it. Weighs just over 1.6kg unpackaged. I am guessing at around 3kg once packaged. L’illuminazione è funzionante ma bisogna rimettergli un cavo a norma perché giuntato con uno vecchio. Gastaldi's Carta Marina includes the earliest obtainable depictions of the California peninsula, is the earliest obtainable copperplate world map for collectors. Includes Gastaldi's belief in a continuous northern landmass, the isthmus reported by Verrazano in 1524, which closes the northern continents into as unbroken ring. The Asia-America connection was a standard concept, and one of which Gastaldi actively advocated. The joining of North America and Europe is unusual, resulting from two errors. In the east, Gastaldi depicts Greenland as an outgrowth of Scandinavia, based upon Waldseemuller. In the west, Gastaldi follows Verrazano’s model of North America. On the Atlantic coast by Gastaldi notes a green mountain and a large, unnamed cape pointing upwards. This cape, based upon Ramusio’s' map of 1534, first appeared in Ribero’s manuscript chart of 1529, as well as later works, such as Jode’s North America.
