The Company was started in 1867, and began making globes for homes and schools in the early 1930s. These were made for both the home and school markets and came in a range of sizes from 8" to 16" in diameter. The product line included"Cram's Universal Terrestrial Globes" featuring a choice of sizes and styles of mountings. This globe is one of that popular line. At age 79 in 1921. Cram sold his company to one of his largest customers, E.A. Peterson. Peterson merged it with his own business, the National Map Company, and moved the business to Indianapolis, Indiana. A Golden Illuminated Glass World C1948 by the George F. Cram Co. A fabulous golden colored glass globe with Arts& Crafts design influence. Illumination of glass worlds was a artistic process beginning with a hand blown glass orb and application of each individual map gore by hand. The result. A magnificent, warm glow that adds ambiance to any room! The George F. Cram Co. experimented with many designs and colors creating the Silver, Red, Black and Golden colored oceans mounted on a myriad of innovative bases. The more simplistic nature of this laquered wood mount compliments the golden orb. Created at the close of WW2 the globe displays the newly minted state of Israel while still portraying Baluchistan as it was before becoming Pakistan in 1947, both are noted in red. With the end of WW2 many of the borders were immediately reinstated ... moreand a rise of nationalism(one people, one state) created new states. This particular model details trade routes denoted in a clear, unusually vibrant red. A handbown glass orb with 12 hand applied coated paper gores with a laquered stamped metal semi-meridian slot mounted on a laquered wood base. The approximate height is 15 inches. The political borders displayed include; Siam(will become Thailand in 1939) French Indochina, Baluchistan with Pakistan in Red(1947) Israel(created in 1948) No division of Germany as yet(1949) A colonized Africa including French West Africa, Belgian Congo and many others. The condition of the globe is excellent with the only mar being a couple of spots of pink paint. The base and meridian are free of any chips or cracks but do have wear in the form of chipping laquer. VINTAGE MILITARY INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL 16" inch WORLD GLOBE Crams Project Rare LOOK!
This is a rare vintage Crams 16" project world globe. I did some reaserch and can't find another one like it. But I am not a globe expert. That being said, due to condition of globe this would probably be more of a decor item than a globe collector item. I have included 12 pics so that you can see what the condition is. It did not have a base when I found it in a barn, literally, so I improvised and used a antique Christmas tree stand. The pole I believe is original, but was all rusty, so I painted the pole and stand a vintage enamel color. The globe I cleaned and coated with a satin clear finish to help protect rest of it from pealing. The Globe stands approx 4 feet tall and has the ability to extend another 2-3 feet. This globe is very unique i think you will agree. First off.It has no brand of any kind.I have never seen that before. Korea is not split yet(1945) i have no idea what is going on with germany on this globe. And Iran and Saudia Arabia appear on it. It seem to be made of some kind of metal.if u look at the last picture of the bottom of the globe,you can see about 3 layers and what feel like metal.but i may be wrong.The colors look extraordinary as well as the"finish" it has on it. Glass globes in this period are fairly rare due to their fragile nature and many have not withstood the rigors of time. Creating a glass world involved crafting a hand blown glass orb with each map gore precisely applied by hand. A time inclusive and skilled craft. This illuminated globe is from the Unrivaled Series of Cram globes. A series that included some of Crams finest globes, including the Serpent Crams, the Silver ocean Crams, and the Rockefeller Crams. This model incorporates the fleur de lis into the mount. The symbol was often used on a compass rose to mark the north direction and is pointed north in this application.
