Offered for sale is a beautiful 18 tile mural hand painted and Made in Italy. It measures 4 ft x 2 ft. I bought it 20 years ago when we were building our Italian style home and traveling in Italy for Italian majolica for architectural features. This one did not find a spot and I finally realized that I need to part with the beauty! This mural depicts the Temple of Vesta in the Forum in Rome. It is signed by the artist on the right bottom corner-Tan Correale Italy. The back of each of the almost 7 7/8" tiles is marked DASS Made in Italy. Each tile is numbered on the back for brainless assembly. I searched eBay and the internet for similar murals-hard to find. The scene on this tin glazed tile depicts Pontius Pilate washing his hands in the matter of the deposition of Jesus Christ. Jesus is depicted on the right with a symbolic halo aura and is being escorted away by an armed soldier after the crowd selected to free Barabbas. Instead. Condition is good with the tile having crazing, a scrape to the bottom right hand facia and the edges being marked commensurate with being use and age(nearly 300 years! 9 Antique Hand Painted Tiles Desvres made in France !
This is a lot of nine different antique tiles. These tiles are hand painted and tell a story. The names Rotbert, Willelm, and harolo are shown on the tiles. I do not know where these came from or if this is a religious story. They have a small amount of residue on the back where they were attached, but it does scrape off fairly easily. The front side is clean and clear with no crazing or chips. The tiles are about 6" x 6" and they are in super condition. The tiles are marked on the back-made in France' and Desvres.

These tiles are something of a mystery to me. They are on 5" Minton blanks and when I bought them I was told that there was a possible link to William de Morgan. Since then I have visited Blackwell, the Arts and Crafts house in the Lake District, where the Inglenook in the Dining Hall has virtually identical tiles, except that they are blue. Apparently all the tiles in the house were supplied by de Morgan, so are these two rejects from that project? I don't know, perhaps someone does. Both tiles have some damage so please look at the photographs carefully, I have not taken them out of the frames in order to retain their integrity. The printed outline is hand coloured with stains and glazes. A process requiring extreme precision for the glazes tend to run resulting in loss of clarity. This glaze painting has given a slightly three dimensional effect somewhat akin to cuerda seca. With three of these tiles to compare it can be seen that the shading is also painted by hand so we have an outline print. Painting of shading, painting of stains and painting of glazes. Such multiple discipline ... morestyle of decorating tiles produces some extraordinary visual effects and are rare as most manufacturers stuck with time tested processes. As with other surface techniques such as lustre. Gilding and the most brilliant of glazes the beauty is impossible to fully comprehend from viewing an on screen image for the glowing screen overrides the nuances of service finishes. For sure a tile that is much better in the hand than appears on screen. Sherwin's used prefix letters to denote the decorating technique. Tiles as this with a simple'R' prefix are very scarce in the marketplace. Some appear in Sherwin& Cotton's c.1908 catalogue with much higher pattern numbers, there are no prefix R pattern numbers in their 1892 catalogue. They also had RT prefix pattern numbers the effect being different and all underglaze painting although still creating low relief. Verso very clean.
