Columbia tiles do not come up for sale very often and the"encaustic" part of their name may mean that that is what they primarily produced-unglazed encaustic tiles.This tile has a"hole" at the bottom right. It was a very dark spot that I ran underwater and it slowly dissolved and left this mark. No doubt a piece of organic material that made it's way onto the surface of the tileduring production and burned into the tile. 5 Antique English Art Nouveau Ceramic Tiles These come from an estate we are honored to be liquidating Note: The pictures make the tiles look a bit yellowed in the lower right corners of the images. That is a function of the indoor lighting. They actual tiles are not yellowed. This lot consists of five Art Nouveau period tiles made in England. They are checkered. With lovely stylized flowers. They measure 6X6 inches. While the overall condition is pretty nice for antique tiles. They do have a few issues worth noting. There are scuffs and scratches scattered about, most noticeable in the plain dark green areas. They have the iridescent sheen that is acquired over time due to cleaning, but that is typical of antique tiles. There are a few small nick around the edges, the worst being on the tile pictured in the upper left. That tile also has ... moresome dark staining on the back. A couple have as-mad imperfections, the most notable being a spot where the glaze did not stick on a small raised bump in the center of the dark green area. Finally, they all have crazing. The last two pictures show the surfaces in bright raking light, to show the minute flaws on the surface. Those flaws are not that obvious to the naked eye under normal lighting situations. Flaws notwithstanding. The design corners are all quite nice. I think these would be great to cut out and use for accent pieces. Overall, a decent, if not perfect lot of genuine antique English Art Nouveau tiles. Offered at a low minimum bid giving consideration to the condition issues. Several dynasties of Turkish origin created unique Islamic art forms now referred to as Seljuk art. Amongst their achievements was production of cobalt blue& luster ware potteries. Dating from around 1900 this item is a colourful example of tiles that were used to decorate washstands and early fire places. It is decorated with a flower head and foliage. The border is a repeating swirl with flower heads at each corner.

For your consideration is this group of 4 art deco ceramic tiles. They are signed by the maker. Villeroy& Boch, Mettlach and measure about 6 3/4" square and 5/8" thick. It would be my guess that they were made as floor tile and likely date to the 1920's or 30's. They have an overall impressed geometric pattern that combines with a central pinwheel shape that gives a dramatic art deco look. Each one has varying amounts of mortar residue on the back as well as some very minor edge wear but nothing that detracts. This is an art nouveau/ Deco dark purple ceramic glazed Flint Faience tile featuring a nouveau floral design. It measures 4 1/4" x 4 1/4"W x 5/8" thick. It is in MINT condition. Hamilton Ohio Victorian Art Nouveau Antique Ceramic Art Tile Sunflower 1890's
Antique Art Tile made by the Hamilton Tile Works of Hamilton.Ohio. Unmarked on the back.But a well documented Hamilton design and grip back. Measures 3" x 3" x a nominal 1/2" thick. Art Nouveau styled sunflower in a deep chestnut brown glaze. Some fine,light abrasion to the glaze at center and a very light hairline scratch that can only be seen in certain light. Providential Trenton NJ 100 + year Antique Ceramic Art Tile Flowers A-57 PTW
Antique Art Tile made by the Providential Tile Co. of Trenton.NJ. Marked on the waffle back as design A-57. Measures 4-1/4" x4-1/4" x a nominal 1/2" thick. PTW went out of business in 1912. Flowers on a lattice background in a moss green and ochre(near edges) glaze.Fantastic fine.Even crystalline crazing. Crazing is inherent toi virtually all tiles of this era. A tiny corner fleabite,but really in outstanding condition. Please not that these photos were taken in natural light.So there are reflections. Any damage will be noted.
