Vintage United States Encaustic Tile Co.
I have for sale a complete set of"The United States Encaustic Tile Co" of Indianapolas Indiana fireplace surround circa 1880. Each tile is 6"x 6" and there is 17 total. There are nesting birds on each side and across the top. There are 2 figures in each corner. One of a man and one of a woman. The bottom tile on the left is missing a corner. I also have floor tile included. Most of the mortar is of the back but there is still some on a few pcs. Due to the weight of the tiles they will be sent in 3 flat rate boxes at 14.95 each for safety in shipping.

Also a tiny tiny chip on the top right corner edge. The bottom corners and edges are slightly rough. The chips are hard to see and do not distract from the appearance. Victorian art tile made by the Columbia Encaustic Tile Co. of Anderson.Indiana.Marked on the back. This tile measures 4-1/4" x 4-1/4" x 1/2" thick. Central flower with botanicals in a mint green and ochre glaze. Columbia tiles do not come up for sale very often and the"encaustic" part of their name may mean that that is what they primarily produced-unglazed encaustic tiles.This tile has a"hole" at the bottom right. It was a very dark spot that I ran underwater and it slowly dissolved and left this mark. No doubt a piece of organic material that made it's way onto the surface of the tileduring production and burned into the tile. A few other chips on the right side as seen in photos as well as a few edge indents that are factory done and glazed over. A scarce tile nonetheless! Offered for auction is a great vintage piece of Chicago history. This fabulous tile façade brick was made by the Northwestern Terra Cotta Co in the 1920’s. This company provided terra cotta bricks and tiles for many of the famous architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Sullivan. Many of the landmark buildings in Chicago have decorative elements provided by this company. The brick is classic Art Deco with a fabulous incised design. It is glazed a red terra cotta color with flecks of black and gray. The tile is in very good condition. It has minor scrapes here and there with a larger chip on the underside bottom corner that would not be visible with installation. It measures 10 inches across by 5 inches wide and 2 ¼ inches thick. Stoke Upon Trent- The partnership between Colin Minton Campbell and Michael Daintry Hollins ended in 1868. It produced a split in the famous Minton company. With Campbell in charge of china production at Minton's China Works, and Hollins producing tiles of various types at Minton, Hollins& Co. Campbell also started to produce tiles, but it was not until he took over an existing tileworks in 1875 that production of encaustic and mosaic floor tiles began. This business was originally styled the Minton Brick& Tile Co. though a lawsuit brought by Hollins forced Campbell to drop'Minton' from the name. MAW& Co FRANK REYNOLDS ARTIST/ ILLUSTRATOR COMICAL GOLF TILE. Here for sale is a Maw& Co tile. It is in excellent condition with no damage at all. There are some very feint crazing lines. Not easy to spot unless you hold it to the light. It measures 7.5 inches x 5.5 inches, but it will be a little larger if you took it out of the wooden frame. The wooden frame has some bumps& loss, but not a great deal. I have 2 other golfing tiles for sale& I will combine on postage for a discount if you buy more than one of them. Size- Each tile is about 6 inches by 6 inches Square These 4 tiles are in EXCELLENT condition and I have photographed the minor chips in the edges I can see. These tiles DO NOT appear to have ever been set as the backs are clean. This is a set of 4 each matching tiles- made by The Campbell Tile Co. Stoke Upon Trent: The partnership between Colin Minton Campbell and Michael Daintry Hollins ended in 1868. It produced a split in the famous Minton company. With Campbell in charge of china production at Minton's China Works, and Hollins producing tiles of various types at Minton, Hollins& Co. Campbell also started to produce tiles, but it was not until he took over an existing tileworks in 1875 that production of encaustic and mosaic floor tiles began. It was most likely designed by the noted ceramicist Herman Mueller and was made by the American Encaustic Tiling Co. to commemorate the dedication of its new factory in Zanesville. Ohio on April 19. 1892. It is in very good condition while noting that the lower left and upper right hand corners are very slighty"rubbed" This tile is featured in the book called“American Art Tile” by Norman Karlson(what I consider a bible of tile collecting)

This stunning arts and crafts tile is marked E Smith and CO Coalville on the reverse. It has a superb image of a woman in mediaeval costume which has a preraphaelite quality to it. This tile comes from the G K BEAULAH tiles sale at Bonhams on 25th January 1995. It is marked with the original Bonhams sale label as lot number 207/23. It also has Ken Beaulah's collection number on the back: 1448 Ken Beaulah was author of Church Tiles of the C19th and a founder member of the Tiles and Architectural Ceramic Society. He began collecting whilst still at school in York. His collection of tiles was all meticulously accessioned. Photographed and documented in a two volume personal catalogue. He is an important figure in the study of architectural tiles. Sadly this tile has been broken in two. But has been expertly glued together. So a full and fussy design quite what one expects of victoriana but even so few designs were so full. Nicely printed and glazed. Decorated in good colours including rich burgundy and bright blue. This magnificent tile was made by Maw and Co. Benthall Works, Broseley,Shropshire around 1875. It is part of a series of 6 tiles based on scenes from the poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow `The hanging of the Crane` which was written in 1874.The tile is moulded in very high relief and has a rich majolica glaze. It is 6 inches square and has the Maws factory marks on the back.This tile is 0.5 inches thick and is much heavier than usual.

2" Antique MINTON HOLLINS& CO Fireplace Relief Tile 1860-1890 Victorian Moulded This is a lovely little tile from Minton. Hollins& Co. Circa 1860s-1890s. It is a brown relief tile from a fireplace. It features a pretty pinecone-like design. This tile bears an impressed circular insignia on reverse: MINTON, HOLLINS& Co. Inside of the circle is the number 2I2 with EB beneath. There is a P outside the circle on the right bottom corner and a X sign in the lower left corner. In 1845. Herbert Minton took Michael Daintry Hollins into partnership. And the tile-making side of the business became known as Minton Hollins& Co. Herbert Minton's successful experiments in making encaustic tiles during the 1840s( Encaustic tiles are ceramic tiles with a decoration made of different colours of clay inlaid into the surface.
