Minton seem to have produced two different series of tiles based upon"Aes o p's Fables" The set of twelve by John Moyr Smith are possibly the more decorative. But the example offered here comes from the other. Rather rarer series. Of these, th is black on cream colour-way appears to be the less common. Usual 6 x 6 inches(15 x 15 cms. Tin iest flaking to top right corner. Otherwise a lovely bright and clean example. I am listing three more in this series. Plus other pictorial tiles etc on e bay today. Earthenware, 6 inches square. Except for the number 16 in pencil, the tile does not appear to be marked on the reverse. See photo. Condition: There are 2 chips on the lower right corner. There is some slight overall crazing. There are chips on the sides of the corners and on the occasional back edge that are not visible on the front. Surface dirt and frit on the sides and back. Part of the series depicting scenes from various plays by William Shakespeare, it is entitled THE TWELFTH NIGHT III- IV. The tile depicts the scene In Act 3. Printed in black on a white base, the Tile measures 6" square. The Tile is in very good condition with a few tiny frits around the edge. JUST OUT OF AN ESTATE I FOUND THIS FRAMED VICTORIAN TILE. THOUGH IT IS UNSIGNED ON BACK IT IS AN EARLIER DOCUMENTED MINTON HOLLIS TILE WITHOUT A DOUBT. IT IS FROM THE KING ARTHUR SERIES AND IS TITLED ENID. WHEN I FIRST LISTED THIS I HAD IT AT SHAKESPEAR SERIES BUT A FELLOW EBAYER SENT ME THE CORRECT INFO. SIGNED IN IMAGE ON FAR LEFT MOYR SMITH. THOUGH THE FRAME IS MUCH LATER THE PRIOR OWNER CHOSE A GOOD STRONG TIGER MAPLE WOOD. THEY USED SOME KIND OF ADHESIVE TO HOLD IT IN PLACE. THOUGH IT IS SLIGHTLY LOOSE ON ONE EDGE I DIDNT WANT TO TRY TO PRY IT OUT IN ANY WAY AS NOT TO DAMAGE OR CRACK THE TILE THOUGH WITH SOME CAREFUL EFFORT IM SURE IT CAN BE REMOVED. THERE IS A SLIGHT BIT OF SPACE AROUND THE TILE AND I USED A FLASHLIGHT TO CHECK THE EDGES FOR DAMAGE AND SAW NONE. SOME IN MAKING FACTORY GLAZED OVER CHIPS ON SIDE EDGES ARE CLEARLY FROM ... moreITS MAKING. AND SOME VERY TINY UNOBTRUSIVE NICS AND I AM VERY PICKY. A BIT OF EXCESS GLAZE ON SURFACE ON LOWER EDGE WITH MINOR FLAT CHIP NEXT TO IT THAT WAS ALSO PROBABLY FROM MAKING. THIS WAS NEVER WALL INSTALLED AND USUALLY THESE TILES WERE USED IN METAL OR WIRE TRIVITS POPULAR DURING THE PERIOD. SURFACE HAS GOOD GLOSS AND WAS NEVER ABRASIVELY SCRUBBED OR CLEANED. GOOD DETAIL BETTER THAN PHOTOS. THIS BEING A BIT MORE UNUSUAL AS IT HAS A BLUE BACKGROUND AND THIS SERIES WAS USUALLY JUST THE BROWN TRANSFER. ENTIRE FRAME IS 8 3/4 SQUARE. This is a superb Minton tile titled"Gareth" by Moyer Smith of which: During our research we have been informed it cer tainly dates from the 19th century. Dates about c1880. Wonderful decoration from the works of Alfred Tennyson. Idylls/King. To the rear: the Minton's China Works logo. It has an overall size of about 6inches square. Condition: Considering the age: the overall condition is excellent and is not subject to any major blemishes. All as per pictures. Besides being a very collectable 19th century Minton tile titled Gareth by Moyer Smith. MINTON AND HOLLINS EIGHT INCH TILE - MORNING - RARE COLOURWAY
This is a lovely tile in very nice condition. It is eight inches square. The series. Produced by Minton and Hollins in about 1880 is quite rare and this particular tile with the four colours is very striking. They are more usually found in two colours(brown/white black/white etc) The tile is quite heavy so I would estimate postage at £11 Royal Mail Special Delivery Please enquire for exact postage to countries outside the UK.
