16th/17th Century Blue& White Delft Tin-Glazed Tile With Mermaid in Ming-Style. Small Dutch Delft tile c.1580 to 1640 decorated with a mermaid blowing a horn on sea waves. Free-hand decorated in blue. 2" 75mm) square. 10mm deep. In very good condition- chip to one corner, cement fixing remains to back. Delftware. Or Delft pottery, denotes blue and white pottery made in and around Delft in the Netherlands and the tin-glazed pottery made in the Netherlands from the 16th century. Delftware in the latter sense is a type of pottery in which a white glaze is applied. Usually decorated with metal oxides. Delftware includes pottery objects of all descriptions such as plates, ornaments and tiles. The earliest tin-glazed pottery in the Netherlands was made in Antwerp by Guido da Savino in 1512. The manufacture of painted pottery may have spread ... morefrom the south to the northern Netherlands in the 1560s. It was made in Middelburg and Haarlem in the 1570s and in Amsterdam in the 1580s. Much of the finer work was produced in Delft. But simple everyday tin-glazed pottery was made in places such as Gouda, Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Dordrecht. The main period of tin-glaze pottery in the Netherlands was 1640-1740. From about 1640 Delft potters began using personal monograms and distinctive factory marks. The Guild of St Luke. To which painters in all media had to belong, admitted ten master potters in the thirty years between 1610 and 1640 and twenty in the nine years 1651 to 1660. In 1654 a gunpowder explosion in Delft destroyed many breweries and as the brewing industry was in decline they became available to pottery makers looking for larger premises; some retained the old brewery names, e.g. The Double Tankard, The Young Moors' Head and The Three Bells. The use of marl. A type of clay rich in calcium compounds, allowed the Dutch potters to refine their technique and to make finer items. Adorable corked and handled ceramic jug. Blue/White Speckled glaze on outside. Marked 1989 and Flatearth on bottom of jug. Measures 5" tall x 4/5" wide approximate. There appears to be an old tape mark or some mark on the bottom. I am not attempting to take this off I'm afraid I may damage the jug. Cork is dried out and splitting. But still fits jug opening. Unique old jug. I was told that this if from mid to late 19th c. however I dont know. Nice dark color. Measures about 14.5"15" tall and about 9" across the bottom. There are some chips in the mouth. A minor crack, presumably from manufacturing on the base, and a minor ding with little cracks on a spot on the side, all detailed in the pictures. Came from the Netherlands. Used as a rose bud vase. No damage as far as I can tell. Was told it was Chinese. Not a collector so I'm not sure. It's a beautiful vase. Unusual blue color. Inside the neck is white. The photos with it laying on it's side on the table shows the neck between the bulges to have the glaze imperfections. Shows a little of the porcelain thru it. If you would like a closer shot please let me know I will try to improve on the photo. There are flaws in the actual glaze application at the neck between the gourd shapes. Here is a very nice Primitive collectible. 6 gallon Crock, light brown and dark brown in color. There is one chip in the top rim about the size of a half dollar coin, and one tiny hair line crack on the side that doesn't seem to go all the way through, measures 14" tall and 13" wide, and weighs about 25 to 30 pounds. This rare pair of antique Chinese blue& white porcelain painted on the bisque rather than under the glaze appears to have been created by two different artists since the painting of each differs though it is the same pattern. Since they are unmarked. They might easily be mistaken for Delft since the Dutch(who were unable to make porcelain and paint blue under the glaze) often copied pieces of this kind. However this type, though rare, is found in the Ching dynasty. Other than a slight roughness to ne of the rims, both are in superb condition. They each measure: 9 inches tall x 5 inches in diameter and 1.5 inches in diameter at the mouth x 2.75 inches in diameter a the base. They each weigh 1 lb. Blue & White Salt Glazed Stoneware BlueBird Mug...Rare
This is one of the cutest small pieces of blue and white stoneware I have ever owned. At one point I acutally had three of these and this is the last one available for sale. It has been in my collection for over 34 years. It is in very good shape and is sound with no chips. It does have a small hairline up by the top of the handle. It appears to be from a spot in the clay that might have happened during firing of the glaze. Normal age and craze lines in surface. Color is very nice and the detail of the bird is excellent.
