A Cobalt Decorated Stoneware Jug or Bottle. Now let me say, I am not a collector of Stoneware. I did however try to research this jug. I must have looked at Thousands of pieces of Stoneware, putting in every keyword I could think of for this type of slip or glaze, and could find nothing like it. I will welcome any idea's from a collector! I do not know it's exact age. It may be vintage, Antique, but it is not marked, like most modern pieces. It is quite beautiful. With it's speckled or mottled Brown with a slight Red Rust shading glaze or slip. I don't think it's Spongeware. And with the lighter clay base is seen dotted in background, those surface dots ... moreare indented. Giving it a slightly rough surface. The brown glaze is glossy. But the Cobalt Blue floral decoration, shading slightly to a lighter Sky Blue on edges, is very high gloss. Heavy. Weighs ~2.5 pounds! This beautiful. Museum quality 17th Century Persian Safavid blue glazed bottle/ pottery/ vase for collector of Safavid or Ancient Persian art measures 5" tall x 5" wide and contains fanciful animal(dog and bird) and plant motifs. The bottle is in good condition for its age(approx. 350 years old) with some expected repairs to the rim. The gold paint and glazed blue color appear throughout the bottle(although some photos seem as if the motifs are partially dark blue and partially gold. This is a result of the flash and all of the motifs are outlined in gold) Some of the animals and plant motifs are more pronounced than others. She is 12-1/2 inches tall and is in perfect condition so I don't know if she's new or used. She has nicely painted features and her shoes are painted with blue flowers and leaves. She's wearing a 2 piece navy blue pant outfit made of cotton with blue. Red and off white flower trim down the front and a sash made of heavy fabric with gold thread trim. This is a 5 day auction This auction is for an interesting blue and white salt glazed pottery bowl. The design on the side is fruit and flowers. I have only ever seen these bowls with the wedding ring pattern on the outside. The bottom doesn't have any writing on it but does have an unusual swirl pattern that I have never seen before. Either. There is a large chip on the inside rim with a tight crack running from it down to the bottom of the bowl. This bowl is solid and I used it to display fruit on my kitchen counter. I wouldn't reccommend it for stirring or serving but it makes a wonderful useful bowl or a display piece. AAFA - Small Salt-Glazed 19th c. Butter Crock w/Cover, Blue Swags, 1/2 Gal.
Found in New England is this great looking. Slightly tapered 1/2 gal. salt-glazed stoneware butter crock with 7 repeating dark cobalt blue swags. The dark tan glaze is still glossy and completely covers the bottom as well as the sides. There is a decorative incised line 1-1/2" down from the top that goes completely around the crock. The interior is a rich brown albany slip. Included with the crock is a very nicely fitting lid, although I'm not sure if it is original to the crock. The crock stands only 4-3/4" high with an 11/16" lip x 7-3/8" wide at the top, and 7-3/4" wide at the bottom. The condition is excellent and solid, although there is a professionally filled tight hairline that can be seen in the last photo. There are also a few old surface chips on the top of the lid. This is a clean nice stoneware example for anyone's proud display collection. Unmarked to capacity, I would say it is best equivalent to just about 1 1/2 gallon size. Condition Report: One very tiny stone ping above coil spray. Triangular shaped stone ping on right side upper shoulder from which emanates a line of vertical glaze drip. Overall pleasing light grey coloration with a small Texas-state shaped beige blotch to left side midway. This is smooth. Just a kiln color aberration in the manufacture. No kiss marks. Clean sound bottom with tiny felt pad dots to prevent scratching. No fry to cobalt, No hairlines. No repairs. This auction is for a very rare 1 1/2 gallon salt glaize crock that has many production defects and a very unusual size making this crock a great addition to any collection. The crock displays very nicely. Then you look at it with a close examining eye you start to notice the manufactoring errors. The top or mouth measures 7 1/2" across on direction and 8" across in the opposite E-W N-S. The pattern lines around the top are not complete all the way around the crock. Essentially the same low-fired enamels were now used with such authority that Qing polychrome-decorated porcelains outshine all others. The stellar polychrome decoration of the Kangxi period, the famille verte palette of enamels, takes its name from several distinctive shades of green that are almost ... moreinvariably present in the color scheme. Famille verte enamels are brightly colored and translucent: they have been applied rather thickly over the darker outlines and details. The glaze is entirely intact, vibrant cobalt blue and grey, and the condition of the bowl is very nice. There are of course a few minor scuffs, marks, dings, etc. testament to five centuries of age, all virtually undetectable. Realistically one would expect some blemishes of a bowl five several centuries old(you and I should look so good five hundred years after being"born" so there are no surprises here except that there are so few blemishes. There are no significant chips– even along the rim; and there are no cracks at all, hairline or otherwise. A few little blemishes are entirely expected of a piece of ceramic 400 years old. We’re only playing the critic pointing out the obvious and inherent indications of age.
