Early Rare Cobalt Blue Mexican Talavera Tile Glazed Earthenware Primitive Rendition ~ Barnyard Roosters Scene Approximate Size: 8 inches by 8 1/8 inches by 5/8 inches. This is an early earthenware Mexican majolica wall tile with tin glaze and in-glaze paint of blue and white design. The Subject is a whimsical primitive rendition of two roosters in a barnyard. Crowing at the rising sun. The hand-made tile is made of brick-colored pottery. It has a creamy-white crazed background. Which is a typical characteristic of Talavera pottery. The hand-painted decorations are light and dark cobalt blue. The perimeter is rounded and finished with a dark blue outline that extends over the edge. The condition of this early tile is good. Having wear and edge chipping commensurate with age. In particular. A chip in the lower right corner of the tile has been ... morecovered up with blue paint. Look closely at pictures. Antique 3 Gallon Salt Glazed Crock Cobalt Blue Butterfly Bee PA or NY Near Mint Up for auction is an antique 3 Gallon Salt Glazed Crock… dating somewhere around 1860-1880. It has the cobalt blue design with the 3 and what looks like a butterfly. Dragonfly, or bee. We believe this crock is from PA or NY as it came through a family that migrated from north central PA. It measures 9 ½” in diameter at the top and it flares to 10” on the bottom. It stands 10” tall. It is in near mint shape… there is a chipped area on one of the applied handles and there is a very shallow dip along the inner top rim. Uncertain if the rim issue is a chip or a manufacturing issue. Each featuring a bold blue and white design of peony blossoms. These superb antique vases are fresh from an excellent estate collection. The vases date to the mid to later 19th Century era(circa 1850-75) and come from a non-smoking household. Like all our auctions, the vases are being offered here with a low opening bid and no reserve price. These vases are skillfully potted. With an elegant color palette and charming tiger-form handles. Note that I've called this a"vase set" rather than a pair of vases, as the two vases differ slightly in height(one vase is 1/4" taller than the other) and design, as can be seen by enlarging the photos below. With the only visible flaws(besides a small bit of light surface wear) being a teeny(1mm) barely visible glaze flake to the rim of one vase and a faint 2 1/2" hairline crack to the back side of the other. This vintage 1950's tray in the shape of a leaf is glazed in varying shades of rich cobalt blue& just a bit of green inside the dish and remains unglazed on the lip and underside. It is clearly marked"Santa Anita Ware. Calif" on the underside. Crazing in the glaze enhance the veining of the leaf. The lip of the dish is a reddish-brown fading to brown, wood-grain texture on the outside. The dish is about 9 inches long and about 5 inches at its widest. No chips or repairs.

I purchased this piece along with the other pieces of pottery shown in the photos while living in the Trier region of Germany in the early 1980's. This beautiful region is dotted with little villages and most have a small village store were you can buy bread. Milk and other daily items. They also sold some housewares and that is were I found these bowls and started my collection of this pottery. The collection was complied over a period of five years. As I explored the Eifel region I would stop into these little stores and see what pottery they had for sale. This style of pottery was common in the area but I noticed that the pottery marked JLK had clean and precise paint lines. I became very good at picking out these pieces at a glance when entering the stores. ... moreThese pottery pieces have been displayed but not used. BOIGRAPHY: Otto Heino(April 20. 1915- July 16, 2009) and Vivika Heino(June 27, 1910- September 1, 1995) were artists working in ceramics. They collaborated as a husband-and-wife team for thirty-five years, signing their pots Vivika + Otto, regardless of who actually made them.One of twelve children born of Finnish immigrants, Lena and August Heino, in East Hampton, Connecticut, United States. His family ran a dairy farm in quiet farm country. Otto Heino's involvement with ceramics began while serving in the U.S. Air Force in England; during a military leave, he spent several days watching Bernard Leach throw pots. Following his return to the US, he used his GI Bill ... morefunding in 1949 to study ceramics at the League of New Hampshire Arts and Crafts, in Concord, New Hampshire. There he met Vivika, his teacherOtto and Vivika moved to California in 1952, where Vivika replaced Glen Lukens, head of ceramics department of the University of Southern California, during his sabbatical; she remained there for three years. Otto also taught at the university during this time. Also in 1952, she became a technical advisor for Twentieth Century Fox Studios, and she and Otto made 751 pots for the movie The Egyptian in 1953. As they prepared to return home to Hopkinton, New Hampshire, she was invited to reorganize the ceramics department at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, and remained there for eight years. Up for auction is this rustic looking 8" tall. Large Vintage pitcher? I can't be sure on the vintage part, but check out the pictures of the bottom which looks old, but no hallmarks The pitcher is in excellent condition witrh no breaks or repairs. The drip design is in shades of blue with some green peeking out in a couple of places over a medium tanish, beige or brown family The glazed body is ribbed. The top rim feels slightly rough in one small section near the pour spout and perhaps it's the way it originally was.
