An excellent example of Thomas Jefferys’ famous map of New England. In four unjoined sheets as issued. Published in Augsburg by Tobias Conrad Lotter, this edition is always more richly colored than the English Jefferys. Lotter was one of the leading German mapmakers of the 18th century, and his edition of the map is particularly useful in that it preserves the original English language text for the title, notations, tables and placenames. Jefferys’ A Map of the Most Inhabited part of New England was the first accurate survey of the area and one of the earliest large scale regional maps of any part of America. First issued in 1755. Description: An extremely attractive panoramic view of Boston Harbor by J. Hill and Charles Mottram. The view reveals a busy harbor with ships of all nations and types plying the waters. In the foreground fisherman and dockworkers ply their trade. In the background the Bunker Hill Monument as well as various church steeples are clearly visible. This view is dated 1857. But we believe it is most likely produced later. Many of Mottram's view plates survived well into the 20th century, including this one, and went through several printing over a long period, often with wide intervals in between. Importantly, the views produce from the various printings are not reproductions, rather they are later restrikes ... morefrom Mottram's original plates. Since the plate was not modified or updated in any way, determining the exact imprint is all but impossible. Our assessment of this example as a 20th century restrike is based upon the quality and texture of the paper, though admittedly similar paper also existed in 1857. Walker(January 4. 1852- 19? was a Boston based publisher of books, views, and maps active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Walker started his life as a dry goods merchant but developed an active interest in publishing during the early 1870s. Walker began publishing in 1878 when he partnered with an unknown New York Firm. Two years later, Walker brought the operation in house by partnering with his brother, Oscar W. Walker, in the opening of a lithography studio at 81 Milk Street, Boston. Shortly thereafter the firm expanded to new offices at 160 Tremont Street, Boston. The Walker brothers produced a large corpus of works, most of which focused on travel and tourism in New England. Walker also established the Walker-Gordon Milk Laboratory. This interesting investment was based on the premise that infant deaths could be avoided by providing higher quality milk. The company eventually became a great success, producing a high quality cow milk that closely resembled human breast milk. In the process the Walker-Gordon laboratory developed many of the dairy health standards that are still with us today.

ORIGINAL 1870 FACSIMILE OF 1775 DES BARRES CHART OF BOSTON HARBOR BY A. MEISEL
This very rare chart is an original 1870 full sized 28 1/2" x 40 1/2" lithographic facsimile(reproduction) image of the Des Barres Boston harbor chart. The sailing directions are not present as compared to the original version. Also. The town of Dorchester and other settlements have been removed at the upper left, with fortifications added. This was one of the charts in Des Barres' Atlantic Neptune, where no two atlas issues were identical. On this facsimile, the phrase"reproduced in 1870, A. Meisel, Lith. appears just below the left lower marginal neatline. The map is in very good overall antiquarian condition with some minor defects. A repair was made in the past at the left margin along a 10" length with some old letterhead used as backing paper(see photo) Signs of a few repaired tears can be seen in the attached ... morephotos. Only a few small spots of discoloration are present. And archival tape has been used to repair some minor tears at folds coming from the edges of the map. A small piece of the chart is missing at the upper left corner as shown in the attached photograph. The chart has folds as issued with some pinholes at the intersection of the folds. The paper is of a solid thickness with no toning at the folds. The chart presents a pleasing uniform appearance for its age. And would make a handsome historical addition for the home or office. It includes 57 photographs of different charts(also includes front cover and index pages) The file sizes are approximately 16.5" X 12.5" 300 dpi. All photographs can be blown up at least three times the size and still keep their quality. The previous one was finished and in use by January of 1850 but destroyed in a major storm in April of 1851. The next one was finished in 1860 and is still standing today. Map is 20" wide by 20.25" high. Map has creases on the folds, and very small tear at the intersecting point of the ... morefold. There is also a closed tear on the left side middle that can easily be seen in one of the photos. Still, nice condition overall. Scarce.
