Hand-Colored Engraved Map Dimensions: 16 7/8 inches tall x 21 1/4 inches wide. Condition: The map has some foxing in several places; there are several places where the map has been folded that have torn; the worst is in south-western Connecticut where the tear is about an inch long; the map is firmly attached to the cover it is in. This map is folded into a leather-bound book that measures 6 inches tall x 3 1/2 inches wide. The map itself has a table that breaks each of the states featured down to their counties and the population of each county in 1810 and in 1820 and the grand totals for each state. This same table also tells the area of each state in square miles and in acres and the number ... moreof people per square mile in each state. There is also a map key which shows principal roads. Common do. existing canals, proposed do. rail roads, and proposed rail roads. Each of these is shown by black lines or colored lines. Each of the counties of the advertised states is a different color from the one next to it. Some of the county names include Nantucket Island, Dukes, Washington, New London, New Haven, Providence, Hartford, Bristol, Plymouth, Worcester, Essex, Franklin, and Hampshire. Antique hand colored map engraved by S Augustus Mitchell Jr. Dated 1867.Measures 15 1/4" by 12 1/2" overall. This depicts Massachusetts,Connecticut and Rhode Island. I believe this came out of his Mitchell's New General Atlas that was published in 1868. It has the fancy grapevine border and accuracy the company was known for. County and Township Map of the States of New Hampshire and Vermont" handcolored map by Samuel Augustus Mitchell Sheet measures 23" x 15" Samuel Augustus Mitchell(March 20. 1792- December 20, 1868) Senior began his map publishing career in the early 1830s. Having worked as a school teacher, Mitchell was frustrated with the low quality and inaccuracy of school texts of the period. His first maps were an attempt to rectify this problem. In the next 20 years Mitchell would become the most prominent American map publisher of the mid-19th century. Mitchell worked with prominent engravers J. H. Young, H. S. Tanner, and H. N. Burroughs before attaining the full copyright on his maps in 1847. In 1849 Mitchell teamed up with printer Cowperthwait& Company to produce the Mitchell's Universal Atlas and the Mitchell's General ... moreAtlas. In the late 1850s most of the Mitchell copyrights were bought by Desilver and Co. who continued to publish his maps, many with modified borders and color schemes, until Mitchell's son, Samuel Augustus Mitchell Junior. Entered the picture. S.A. Mitchell Jr. purchased most of the copyrights back from Desilver and, from 1860 on, published his own New General Atlas.
