It is Plate 19 of a Boston Atlas, but I ... moreonly have this one Plate. From Beach Harbor to East Seventh Street. This map measures approximately 21 x 30 1/2 inches. Including the border area. It is blank on the reverse side. Map is generally in Fair condition. The map has some wear and browning. There are creases and tears around the edges of the paper and other stains along the edges. There are creases in the corners and the paper is"crumpled" around the edges. There are several tears in the map that were"fixed" with tape by a previous owner. There are other tears and creases along the edges. There are other creases and dings here and there. As well. This map is a great piece of history! It will look very nice when framed. Depicts"Charlestown in ruins" to the north of the city. With individual buildings damaged as a result of fighting during the Battle of Bunker Hill. Within the city itself we see a military magazine below Cambridge Street, as well as a Military Battery on the Common. Beacon Hill looks as if it were part of a mountain range, a fortification block is seen at the bottom neck, at the start of orange street. Noteworthy for its historical significance. Bellin provided a huge number of maps for L'Abbe Prevost's'Histoire Generale des Voyages' A 25 volume plus work describing the discoveries, journeys and settlements of seventeenth and early eighteenth century European powers. Many of these maps were issued in Dutch and German as well as French. This map comes from a 1757 French edition of'Histoire. The pre-revolutionary-era city map of Boston has very good detail- it shows the layout of the city streets in Charlestown and Boston. Suffolk County and Adjacent Towns* 1830- This is a very scarce and desirable piece of antique geographical memorabilia from Boston. Massachusetts, almost 2 centuries old, involving two very rare early hand-colored maps of the city(both of which are hard-to-find in the uncolored state, but the original hand-colored maps are even rarer) These two maps are included in a(first edition) 1830 book titled"A Geography of Boston. County of Suffolk and ... morethe Adjacent Towns(with Historical Notes) It was written by C. H. Snow. MD, and published in Boston by Carter and Hendee in 1830. This book. With its many engravings and wonderful historic information, is great in itself, but the most outstanding feature, of course, is that it is accompanied by two wonderful hand-colored foldout maps. The first of these is a Bowen map showing the"Plan of Boston" with the various wards distinguished by different pastel shades and the center Common left uncolored. This 7-1/2 by 5-1/2 inch map extends to include part of South Boston and there is fine detailing of the major streets in these areas and along the wharves. It is the second map(also by Bowen) which is extremely rare. More often than not missing or heavily damaged on those few occasions when this book is offered for sale by antique book and map dealers. The upper 10" of the sheet has a number of tears along with some very small amounts of paper loss at the center of the upper edge(see the scans below) The remainder of the sheet has some uniform age toning but no damage or wear. The lower 4" of the sheet does, however exhibit, darker toning likely caused by contact with the wooden roller. This rare and important Map is a very good candidate for a professional repair and restoration. There are literally thousands of engraved features in this map- hundreds and hundreds of buildings delineated in tiny detail- bridges- churches- and the harbor and waterways are full of ships and boats, perhaps 100 of them represented in painstaking detail. Overall, a beautiful rare map with nice color that would frame up nicely. Size: The map image measures approximately 12 1/2 by 15 1/2 inches(32x39cm) on a 15 1/2 by 18 1/2" 37x44cm) page with a margin all around for framing as seen in the pic. Condition: The map is in Very Good condition with overall light tonal aging and original hand coloring as issued. There is a very light damp stain along the bottom margin and a couple of minor spots. Otherwise it is very clean with no distracting defects to mention, see the pics for more on condition. Overall, a very nice map printed on heavy paper in great shape with an antique appearance that would frame up nicely. The pics are of the actual map.
