The Township of Rutland is bisected by the Massachusetts Central Railroad and shows a number of different villages: North Rutland P.O. New Boston, White Hall, Rutland Centre P.O. Pound Hill and West Rutland P.O. Other landmarks include Ware river, Long Meadow Brook, Rice Hill, Masquapog Pond, Long Pond, Demond Pond, Turkey Hill Pond and Mill Brook. The Business Directory lists some 25 names of merchants. Manufacturers and dealers. The small inset map of West Rutland shows two triangular parcels just west of where the current Barre Paxton Rd crosses over Long Pond. There used to be a Post Office there as well as several residences and a cemetery. The inset map of Rutland Centre is highly detailed area around Main St with two cemeteries. And many residences, shops, stores etc. It also shows a piece of the“Proposed Mass. Central Railroad. Map condition: very minor foxing. Some light smudges along right and bottom perimeter. Williamsville was undoubtedly named after the Hale& Williams Chair Factory& Saw Mill which was located just south of what is now called the Wax Factory Pond and the Burnshirt River. Still River P.O. and Harvard Depot. Landmarks include: North Family Shakers, Robbins Pond, Hell Pond, Prospect Hill, Bare Hill Pond, Black Pond. Numerous residences. Buildings etc. are identified by name as well as the Worcester& Nashua RR. Harvard Centre map is the intersection of a spider of streets. Although not identified by name on the map they correspond to the current Still River Rd. Lovers Lane, Elm St, Ayer Rd, Littleton Rd, Oak Hill Rd, Old Littleton Rd, Fairbanks St and Mass Ave. The cemetery shows a Hearse House and just below that a notation that reads: Site of the Bromfield mansion. Built 1730, burned 1853. This explains the name of the current Bromfield School just to the west of it. The small Still River inset is the current junction of Still River Rd and Still River Depot Rd. The maps served as a directory to the towns proving names and locations of the residents. In the detail maps of the town centers many of the dwellings are located to the shpe of the building. Good news: This rare and interesting old map is from the Atlas of Essex County. Massachusetts, published in 1884 by Geo. H. Walker. This is two-page spread with maps on both sides. the Village of Rockport map covers two pages; on the reverse. a one page map of Pigeon Cove and a one page map of the town of Middleton. Rockport village map is approximately 28 by 17.5 inches. On reverse, Middleton map and Pigeon Cove map are approximately 14 by 17.5 inches. All maps show the property owners' names on houses.
