Salem Mass Map, 1890, Historic original .
This is an original map from the Historic Preliminary Edition of the Massachusetts Topographical Atlas. There is a sunbeam that lighted an area on the map during the photo. The title page is shown for provenance and is not included. Massachusetts was the first state to work with the Federal Government regarding a National Geological map. This map was published in 1890 based on surveys done between 1884 and 1888. The map size is about 15 1/2 x 20 1/2 inch. The scale is 1/62.500. There is some ageing to the paper, and minor soiling, both to be somewhat expected. The paper the map is printed on is still strong. The map will be rolled and shipped in a tube, maintaining the situation that the map has never been folded. The title of this listing is the same that the mapmakers gave to the particular map itself. They were following a system of geographic ... moredivisions of the state that do not always show the entire town or city limits on to one map. Please view the map to see exactly how they did on this particular map. J. Wesley Powell. The second director of the United States Geological Survey had pushed Congress to approve a national geological map(1882) Powell then established a program to create a national topographical survey to provide the basis for that map. Constitutional constraints required that this survey was implemented through cooperative agreements with each state. The first state to work with the Federal government in this regard was Massachusetts. A special commission was established to organize the state’s side of the work. Which entailed a certain amount of detailed surveying. The survey itself ran from 1884 to 1888 and this“preliminary edition” of the topographical atlas was published in 1890.

This is an extremely rare. Separately issued map of the coasts and harbors of Salem, Beverly, Marblehead and Manchester. Nov 1 1834 This is the second edition of this map. Originally published in 1806, it includes additions by Charles M. Endicott and Joseph Perkins, Jr. In 1804, Nathaniel Bowditch undertook the task of surveying the waters around Salem, as he found the existing charts to be insufficiently detailed or accurate. He put together a small team of assistants and they spent eighty days mapping the waters from Gale's Point to Manchester. The map is filled with information on soundings, hazards, and anchorages, and it includes Baker's Island, House Island, Cat Island and the Misery Islands. Both Salem Neck and Marblehead Neck are well delineated, and the coastal areas include notes of interest, including Thissel's House. ... moreAnd Phillip's house, beach and point. Bowditch's map was so accurate that the old pilots complained that since all their professional secrets were now included on the chart, their services would no longer be needed to navigate the hazardous shipping lanes. The cartouche is decorated with a scene of a lighthouse, ship and port. The map was crisply engraved by Hooker and Fairman. Stamped bottom right corner is the number 0000401. Size: 26 x 21 inches + 2 inch margin top& bottom + 6+ inch margin each side 66.1 x 53.4 cm Condition: This chart has been glued down to a 1/4 inch thick white archival backing board. I am not sure what glue was used. Or if it can be safely removed. Otherwise the map is in nice shape with no apparent rips, tears, gouges, or holes. There are a couple small stains to right margin and some light bubbling/creasing to a few spots of the map. This item is a reproduction. The Peabody did do some reprints off the original copper plate in the 1960's, and I am assured that his is one of those restrikes.
