The map identifies all streets, ponds and lakes, parks, proposed landfills and improvements, rail lines(extent and proposed) piers, official buildings, major business, and the residences of prominent citizens. From City Hall concentric circles radiate at 1/4 mile intervals. The site and many buildings associated with Brown University are prominently shown. This lot consists of an ocean survey map from the 1930's done by the United States Department of Commerce depicting Rhode Island Narragansett bay and New port Harbor. A very nice piece that measures 36 x 47.5 inches. This item has some edge wear as can be seen in the picture and a very tiny piece of the border cut out. Early in the War the city of Newport. Rhode Island and thus access to Narragansett Bay was seized by the British Major General Robert Pigot. This map illustrates attempts by the Continental forces under Major Generals Nathanael Green and Lafayette to control of the Bay. The Battle of Rhode Island(Aquidneck Island) as the siege is now known, was ultimately indecisive, with both sides claiming victory. Ultimately strategic control of the region fell to the British, who forced Continental forces to withdraw to Bristol and Tiverton while maintaining control of Aquidneck Island, Newport, and Narragansett Bay. This map appeared in French version of John Marshall's seminal work. The Life of Washington. Marshall composed the five volume biography between 1805 and 1807 and based the work on original papers and records provided by the president's own family. This map was engraved by Jean-Nicholas Buache de Neuville and appears in the 1807 French edition of Marshall's Vie De George Washington. Source: John

The map is beautifully illustrated with houses, forts, forests and scenes from various activities including horse riding, ... moreswimming, fishing, etc. The map features the Rhode Island coat of arm and is surrounded by 39 additional coats of arms and emblems of the various counties and towns. Eleven illustrated views featuring the Kent County Court House built in 1803, Court House in Bristol, Colony House Old State House, State House, Old Kingston Court House, Old State House Newport, First Baptist Church of America built in Providence in 1779, Slater Mill the First Successful Cotton Mill in America, Old St. Paul's Church, Birthplace of Gilbert Stuart and Old Trinity Church are also included. In the top right quadrant, a portrait of Roger Williams, the founder of Providence is also featured. This map was edited by Howard M. Description: This is an attractive and uncommon c. 1900 bird's eye view map of Narragansett Bay. Rhode Island, by the Boston map publisher George H. Walker. The view covers the entirety of Narragansett Bay from Point Judith to Providence, and extending eastwards as far as Warren Point and Sakonnet. The map presents the region from a bird's eye perspective facing north. It identifies Newport, Conanicut Island, Prudence Island, Rhode Island, and various settlements along the bay's extensive shoreline. Trail routs are also rendered. Walker is better known for his similar view maps of Boston Harbor- the present example is thus somewhat out of his focus area and very scarce.
