Description: A fine 1876 view of Boston Harbor published by Ferdinand Meyer. This view. Centered on the Royal Mail Steamship RMS Britannia, commemorates the exceptionally cold winter of 1844. By February of that year Boston Harbor was completely closed by ice. Commerce, long Boston's lifeblood, was largely being directed to New York and other cities further south. The Merchants of Boston, feeling the pinch, banded together to hire John Hill and the firm of Gage, Hittinger and Company to clear a channel some 7 miles long from the Boston's shipping docks to open water. This impressive achievement revived Boston's endangered shipping economy. Among ... morethe first ships to leave Boston via the channel was the RMS Britannia, a Royal Mail Steamship of the Cunard Line. The'British and North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company' later renamed after its founder, Cunard, acquired the British government contract to deliver the U.S. Transatlantic mail in 1838. To facilitate the contract they commissioned three steamships. With three majestic masts complementing a great smokestack, the first and largest of these was the RMS Britannia, commissioned in 1840. The RMS Britannia was also first steamship in the Cunard Line. The Britannia sailed from Liverpool, in England to New York, thence to Boston, from which it returned to Liverpool, a round trip journey of about 13 days. This lithograph view of the event was commissioned by James Alexander. Alexander represented Cunard's interests in Boston and was a passionate advocate for the development and expansion of Boston Harbor. He was responsible for construction of the Boston Cunard Warf as well as East Boston's first grain elevator. Alexander commissioned this view in 1876 to celebrate the tenacity of the Boston Merchant class and possibly to woo the directors of the Cunard

Description: An extremely attractive panoramic view of Boston Harbor by J. Hill and Charles Mottram. The view reveals a busy harbor with ships of all nations and types plying the waters. In the foreground fisherman and dockworkers ply their trade. In the background the Bunker Hill Monument as well as various church steeples are clearly visible. This view is dated 1857. But we believe it is most likely produced later. Many of Mottram's view plates survived well into the 20th century, including this one, and went through several printing over a long period, often with wide intervals in between. Importantly, the views produce from the various printings are not reproductions, rather they are later restrikes ... morefrom Mottram's original plates. Since the plate was not modified or updated in any way, determining the exact imprint is all but impossible. Our assessment of this example as a 20th century restrike is based upon the quality and texture of the paper, though admittedly similar paper also existed in 1857. Walker started his life as a dry goods merchant but developed an active interest in publishing during the early 1870s. Walker began publishing in 1878 when he partnered with an unknown New York Firm. Two years later, Walker brought the operation in house by partnering with his brother, Oscar W. Walker, in the opening of a lithography studio at 81 Milk Street, Boston. Shortly thereafter the firm expanded to new offices at 160 Tremont Street, Boston. The Walker brothers produced a large corpus of works, most of which focused on travel and tourism in New England. Walker also established the Walker-Gordon Milk Laboratory. This interesting investment was based on the premise that infant deaths could be avoided by providing higher quality milk. The company eventually became a great success, producing a high quality cow milk that closely resembled human breast milk. In the process the Walker-Gordon laboratory developed many of the dairy health standards that are still with us today.

Filled with details which it is virtually impossible to adequately represent in a scan. There are literally thousands of engraved features in this map- hundreds and hundreds of buildings delineated in tiny detail- bridges- churches- and the harbor and waterways are full of ships and boats, perhaps 100 of them represented in painstaking detail. Very prominent in this map is the"burned district, the approximately ... more65 acres of the city that were destroyed by the"Great Boston Fire of 1872, which had occurred less than a month before this map was made. This is a fantastic piece of historical memorabilia. Not just an artifact of the City of Boston of almost a century and a half ago, but also a stark reminder of the damage done by the greatest fire in that city's history. This is an extremely detailed map, a piece of Boston and Massachusetts history, and a striking antique for display. The cause of the Great Boston Fire is unknown. But it was not entirely unexpected. The city's fire chief had for years pleaded for the installation of a new fire hydrant system. And when Chicago burned in 1871, the city of Boston sent its fire chief there to observe, and his report indicated that Boston was open to the same type of calamity. This is an incredibly detailed map and it is the precision with which this map was engraved that makes it great. Original Boston Fire Birds Eye View Harper's Weekly December 14, 1872
This is a great original birds eye view of Boston after the great fire from Harper's Weekly magazine supplement dated December 14. 1872. This original 140+ year old Woodcut print map is really scarce. Measures approximately 31 X 23 inches. The detail in this print is just fabulous. In overall Fair condition but there is a tear on the left side and piece torn out and other tears on bottom right area. All pieces are here so conservation is possible. Also has some some edge wear/tears. And discoloration. Please see all pics for more accurate description of condition. Please ask all questions prior to bidding or the end of the auction.
