It is a steel plate engraving with original hand coloring as issued with the desirable floral border. It is from Mitchell's New General Atlas. Published in Philadelphia by Augustus Mitchell, 1860. There is a copyright date of 1860 along the bottom margin in small print that states"Entered according to an Act of Congress in the year 1860 by Augustus Mitchell in the Office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington. A copy of the title page is also included for authenticity. The map is not mounted, matted nor framed being sold as a single sheet as seen in the first pic. Overall. A Beautiful Classic Antique Map with Superb Color! Size: The map image measures approximately 10 1/2 by 13 inches on a 12 1/4 by 15 1/4" page with a margin all around as seen in the pic. Condition: It is in Good condition for its age. Basically as seen in the pics, with overall tonal aging and slight darkening around the edges. There are a couple of chips off the edge and a short edgetear, margins have been slightly cropped and some light handling around the margins, otherwise the map image is very clean in general with bright color and a nice antique quality that is rare to fine in this condition. It is printed on heavy paper, blank on the reverse with original handcolor as issued. The pics are of the actual map and very accurate of condition and color in general, however the actual map looks much better. LARGE ORIGINAL 1857 MAINE MAP FROM COLTON US ATLAS HAND COLORED
Antique map from Colton's Atlas of America. 1857 Original 157 year old antique map from Colton's Atlas of America. The scarce advertising atlas with numerous full and half page advertisements in addition to the maps. We purchased the atlas as a partial one with some of the advertisements removed. We've included an image of the title page(not included as part of this auction) below, just for informational purposes. The overall size of the page is an impressive 18.5" x 16" The map was printed and then hand watercolored to show the various counties and other divisions. It provides a fascinating snapshot view of the area's geographical details at the time of publication 157 years ago. Condition is very good. And much nicer than the image would suggest. There is some modest age-darkening around the edges, otherwise the ... moremap is very clean. It's not as dark as the photo would suggest. There are a few light shadows lettering from the advertisement that was on its opposite page at one time. Barely visible. The reverse side is blank. See the image for condition details. But frankly, the image really doesn't do it any justice. We are/will be offering many of these maps on eBay. As well as some of the better advertisements. These maps were given to me from an estate to sell. I say this for transparency. As I will not be of much help in grading the shape of the maps. As you can see in the photos it does have some wear around the edges but the actual image is in great condition. It also has a fold/ crease in the center as it was part of a book. Johnson's maps were some of the best maps produced during the 19th Century and were used extensively during the Civil War. This map is over 145 years old and is both rare and highly desirable.
