I want to start by saying"I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS MAP IS AN ANTIQUE OR A REPRODUCTION" I do know that it came from an old estate here in R.I. I also know the only thing better than an interesting old map is an interesting map that is nicely framed. This map was originally engraved in 1729 then reproduced in 1869. In the right lower corner is written Photo- lith. by George H Walker& Co. Boston. Please study all the pictures this map is very interesting. Nowhere on the map is written Massachusetts. The British flag appears in two places the South Battery and the North Battery(see last photo) Nowhere can I find an American flag. It has all the favorites like The Common. Long Warfe and Beacon Hill. The Charles River has a ferry crossing. Study the pictures and you will find a lot of interesting things like the ships in the harbour ... moreare flying Union Jack British flags. If you live in Boston see if you can find where you live or work. The back of the frame is covered with a plain paper that seams to have some age. There are two old I screws on back with some very old wire for hanging. The paper on back has not been removed. There are many great maps out there but this I think this one has such great detail it makes it very special. The dimensions are 16 3/4 in by 12 3/4 inches. Walker(January 4. 1852- 19? was a Boston based publisher of books, views, and maps active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Walker started his life as a dry goods merchant but developed an active interest in publishing during the early 1870s. Walker began publishing in 1878 when he partnered with an unknown New York Firm. Two years later, Walker brought the operation in house by partnering with his brother, Oscar W. Walker, in the opening of a lithography studio at 81 Milk Street, Boston. Shortly thereafter the firm expanded to new offices at 160 Tremont Street, Boston. The Walker brothers produced a large corpus of works, most of which focused on travel and tourism in New England. Walker also established the Walker-Gordon Milk Laboratory. This interesting investment was based on the premise that infant deaths could be avoided by providing higher quality milk. The company eventually became a great success, producing a high quality cow milk that closely resembled human breast milk. In the process the Walker-Gordon laboratory developed many of the dairy health standards that are still with us today.

For your consideration a rare birds eye view map of Boston& Environs by George H. Walker Company. Copyright 1905 Boston Massachusetts. An early colored lithograph on paper framed under glass. Not removed from the frame. There are ripples through the map and some minor distortion to the border at the top. Also a mild water stain on the left edge of the border about an 1" at the widest by 16" long running vertically. The map has faded some but is still within collectable status. The image measures 19-1/8 x 27-11/16 inches. The glass size in the front is 21-3/4 x 29-5/8. The frame measures 23-1/4 x 31-3/16 inches. Weight in the frame 7.1 pounds. The image appears to be clean without rips punctures or stains. The variation in color at the bottom of some of the photos included are not in the map but are glare from the glass from ... morethat the camera picked up. Walker this map depicts a detailed, street by street, black& white layout of Boston in 1883. Each street is labeled and it truly is a time capsule of history. This map was salvaged from a severely damaged book and is quite damaged itself although a lot of time and effort was taken in restoring this map to a displayable quality. 1907 WALKER POCKET CANNOE MAP CHARLES RIVER LITHOGRAPHERS MASSACHUSETTS
This is a 1907 Canoe Map of the Charles River with a Bird's Eye View showing Carries Dams. The colors on the map are bright and not faded although me camera did not take very good pictures. On each of the folds there are tiny rips but all of the paper is there and laid flat you can not see them. There is also a rip on the one fold closest to the cover but it also is all there. It is 20 x 27 and folds up to 7 x 4 inches. It covers I believe these states CT MA ME NH RI VT. Shipping will be 4.00 including insurance. Thanks for looking.
