At the age of 22, Robert Edwin Dietz bought a small lamp and oil shop in Brooklyn, New York. Robert, with his brother William, called the company Dietz, Brother and Company. One of their first products was a candle lantern; they later made sperm whale oil lamps, girandoles, hall lamps, and chandeliers. Three more Dietz brothers joined the company in 1855, and the name became Dietz and Company. That same year, the brothers built a large factory in New York City. The next year, in 1856, Dietz patented a flat wick burner to burn coal oil, a much cheaper fuel. In 1868, Robert sold his interest in Dietz and Company and partnered with Absalom Smith to form a new company, Dietz and ... moreSmith. When Smith purchased 6,000 velocipedes{ a mid-19th century bicycle} on company credit, Dietz decided he was a bad business partner and bought Smith's interest. He continued to run the company as R.E. Dietz. In 1897, a devastating fire destroyed the R.E. Dietz factory in New York City. To avoid going out of business, R.E. Dietz merged with the Steam Gauge and Lantern Company of Syracuse, New York, and eventually moved the company's manufacturing center to that city. THE DIETZ CONVEX LANTERN: This is a great antique lantern of large size. It measures 20" high to the top of the ring holder. The clear blown glass globe is 9" in diameter. The protective cage around the globe is 11 1/2" in diameter. The lantern weighs 6.3 pounds. It has a great old antique red paint patina that was applied over the base tin metal. The burner slides out through the bottom of the base. CONDITION: The lamp is in good antique condition. There are use and age marks. Including paint loss in several areas. RARE WW11 ERA HEKLICHT DUTCH SHIPS LANTERN
Here is a remarkable early ships lantern in excellent condition. The original clear lens is completely free of chips and cracks and features the original registration numbers etched into the glass that match the stamped number on the lantern housing. In addition there is a different number into the lid of the lantern on the inside. This unique ships lantern is constructed of galvanized steel and copper. The dome itself is copper and the hinges and other hardware are attached with copper rivets. This historic ships lantern is in original condition just missing its original oil burning unit. The hinge top opens and shuts securely. It stands 18" high and roughly 8" deep and wide. The round ring which originally housed the burner unit is about four and three quarter inches in diameter. THIS ONE IS SO COOL IT HAS A PART THAT RAISES AND LOWERS AROUND THE FONT POT IN CASE OF HIGH WINDS AND THIS IS THE FIRST ONE I HAVE EVER SEEN. THE LANTERN IS BRASS AND HAS THE ORNATE SMALL HOLE DESIGNS IN THE BASE AND THE SIDE OF THE TOP. IT HAS A BEAUTIFUL PATINA OR FINISH ON IT FROM AGE AND THERE IS MINOR DISCOLORATION ON THE BRASS. THE GLOBE HAS A CHIP NEAR THE NAME AT THE BASE BUT IT'S SOLID AND YOU CAN SEE THE NAME ALONG WITH NEW YORK RAISED IN THE GLASS. YOU CAN'T SEE THE CHIP WHEN IT SITS IN THE LANTERN THIS ONE IS A MUST FOR THE SERIOUS LIGHTHOUSE COLLECTOR. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN LIKE BACK IN THE MID 1800s USING THIS LAMP IN ONE OF THE LIGHTHOUSES AND USING WHALE OIL TO BURN FOR LIGHT. IT 17 1/2 INCHES TALL TO THE TOP OF THE HANDLE WHEN RAISED AND 12 INCHES TALL TO THE TOP OF THE DOME. IT'S 6 INCHES ACROSS THE CAGE AND THE BASE IS 5 1/2 INCHES IN DIAMETER. RARE 1900'S ANTIQUE NAUTICAL- BOAT SIGNAL LANTERN - BRASS - ZINC- OIL BURNING
For your bidding is a Rare P and A Mfg. Antique Nautical Boat Signal Lantern with Brass Oil Burner. Font Lighting Popular in the 1900's to communicate to other ships. Or ship to shore before Marconi was invented and used. This beautiful lamp was given to me by my Aunt when I was a child. Both my Aunt and Uncle were avid collectors of memorabilia from Great Lakes Ships and Freighters. Often they would buy the inside remains of a ship when it was to be scrapped. Removing steering wheels. Telegraphs, chad burns, lanterns, name plates, ship wheels, compasses, steam whistles, you name it. Anything that had value to be saved later and become collectible. I have no doubt this piece came off a ship. I just do not know which one. This is a beautiful piece. Which I feel is museum quality, and should belong to a serious collector. That is why I'am ... morelisting it. It is in Very Good condition for its age. Era and vintage. There is some slight wear which is understandable for a piece this old. I have not polished the Brass in years. There are no dents. Or dings on the piece, a few minor spots of rust, on the inside signal shutter, behind the lens, which I'm sure would clean up with little effort. The 3" glass lens is flawless, with no scratches, cracks, or chips. The door opens. And closes as does the spring signal shutter. The belt clip is complete, along with the two adjustable carrying handles. Inside you will find the original burner. And wick. The top unscrews to fill it with lamp oil and it is adjustable for brightness. This does have Boat Signal Lantern stamped above the hinged door. Perko is NOT the only company who made these lanterns. The only markings on this one are on the burner wick adjustment which says P and A Mfg. Waterbury Conn, Usa. Which stands for Plume and Atwood Manufacturing. The company was established in 1869.
