The ... moreinitiates would take from the body of the deceased various relics, which were then decorated with metal and rubbed with powders of multiple magical powers. The Kota have produced large quantity of statues of ancestors with the diamond-shaped lower part called mbulu-ngulu; these rather two-dimensional sculptures are in wood; symbolic metals were applied to the upper part in strips or sheets to add power. Copper in particular was identified with longevity and power. These statues stood guard in cylindrical bark boxes. On baskets or bundles called bwete that contained the skulls and bones of important ancestors. Bound into a packet and lashed to the base of a carved figure. The bones formed a stable base that allowed the image to stand more or less upright. Thanks to the diversity of the groups, scattered over a vast area, a great variety of different styles of figures has developed, some of them endogenous and some influenced by neighboring styles. Kota figures represent an extremely stylized human body. Reduced to shoulders and“arms, in emptied lozenge shape, surmounted by a large face framed by an ample coiffure with hanging tresses. The face, always oval, may be concave(female) convex(male) or concave-convex, with a forehead in quarter-sphere(also male) The reliquaries were kept outside the homes, in huts at the edge of the village. Only the initiates of the lineage had access to this sacred place. At the time of initiation in the reliquary cult, the clans would meet to perform communal rituals; each clan’s chief would dance holding the reliquary. Some reliquaries featured a large figure representing the lineage founder along with some smaller figures representing his successors. There are figures with two identical or different faces made on two opposite sides of the flat head. Secured on a wooden base. Measurements: 22" in height by 10 1/2" at width.

Original 1800's SPANISH CONQUISTADOR Brass Armor Shoe Stirrups These are fabulous find of original handmade Spanish Conquistador solid brass shoe armor stirrups. The history on these type stirrups is amazing. This style of stirrup evolved in Europe during the 1700-1800's. They were handforged from church bells. Cannons, and other metal including armor from conquering other warriors. The stirrups were made and styled to provide armour protection for the conquistador horseman's feet against weapons including swords and clubs. Due to the heavy construction they also providing a firm and solid base platform for the horseman to stand up in while using his own sword or weapons. The Spanish Conquistadors were some of the first to use this type of stirrup and brought them as part of their armor to battles. These stirrups are heavy solid ... morehandforged brass that are about 10 1/4" long. 4 1/4" wide at back insert and 4 3/4" tall to the heavy brass attachment bar on top. On the bottom of these stirrups are a 3/4" round hole for draining of moisture or water from the boots or shoes. Newer versions of these type of stirrups were made more decorated and ornate but the style and condition of these date them older. They are well scratched on the bottoms as shown in photos which indicates that the wearer was in many battles. Wonderful collectable for history buffs as an interesting display. Culture: Bolivian Spanish manufacture. Aymara/Quechua/Uruqilla use. Approximate Age: Late 18th century to early 19th century. Materials: Fine silver. Although the pin shows good evidence of use, it is in superb, guarded condition. The pin has not been cleaned. The flattened neck is nicely stamped with curvilinear floral designs edged by fine“end of file” stamping. Wear and dings to decorative silver plated brass mounts- most of the silveplate is now worn off from repeat polishings; also 1 corner mount is missing. 11"H. Two traditional Kuna Yala tribe women's molas. These are very finely stitched multi-layer tribal blouse front panels. Before missionaries came to the Kuna tribe in Panama the women wore semi-permanent tattoos on their upper torso(and nothing else. The missionaries made them cover up and they transferred the designs to their blouses. I don't know how old these are. But I bought them from a Panamanian 20 years ago. This woman spent time with the Kuna Yala and got the molas directly from the women in the tribe. There are two scenes of daily life-traditional canoe paddles in one and two people facing each other.
