A Fine Ngaady Amwaash/ Kete. Kuba, Congo- FINE PROVENANCE Wood. Fine patina, white kaolin, remains of pigments, cowrie shells. Hammered coper, beads, ... morefur, large bell-shaped mask, hallowed eyes with one small see slit, geometric patterns. Kuba peoples call themselves“children of Woot” in honor of their founder. Kuba art is characterized by its use of geometric patterns and cowrie shells. Three types of mask have been associated with dances that take place within the royal compound. The first. Called Mwaashamboy represents Woot. Founder of the Bushoong tribe. The second, known as Ngaady Amwaash. Personifies Woot‘s incestuous sister-wife. The third mask, the Bwoom. Represents a pygmy and is associated with Woot‘s evil brother. This mask. Ngaady Amwaash portrays Mweel. Woot's beautiful sister and wife(alternatively, mother) and who represents women in general. The mask is striking with its strong pattern of white and black triangles painted on the face, which are said to represent hearthstones and domesticity. Lines painted down the cheeks represent tears and recall the pain of death, for royal masks often appear in funerary contexts. The tears also denote the hardship of a woman's life as a"pawn" of male authority befitting the mask's name(Ngaady aMwaash) which means"pawn woman of Mwaash, her husband/brother king. The Ngaady Amwaash and Moshambwooy masks dance together on ceremonial occasions with great dignity and pride“ University of Virginia. African Masks Signs of use. H: 48 cm(19 inch) Provenance: L. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, cracks to back rim of mask. Chips on horn tips, scrapes, scratches, Additional Information: This wooden Mask in Form of Buffalo(Kiyunde) is from the Tabwa people of Southeast Democratic Republic of Congo and Northeast Zambia. This is a large and impressive mask carved from a single piece of wood. Numbering more than 200. 000 the Tabwa were noted as early as the 19th century and today live along Lake Tanganyika. This mask portrays a male wild buffalo called ‘kiyunde’ and appears wearing a costume composed of animal skins and grasses. It dances with a companion mask depicting a female. The Tabwa identify wild buffalo with their strength and behavior with chiefs and their culture heroes. The name buffalo is also given to the circumcised boys. Tacks worked onto the face of the mask in elaborate and attractive scarification patterns and designs represent the Tabwa concept of ‘kulemba’ that reflect aesthetics, social membership and the abstract idea of order upon the chaos of nature. This is a typical and well-carved example of Tabwa Buffalo mask that would stand well in a collection for what it represents. For similar example and further Information see Constantjin Petridis& Franck Herreman(eds. FACE OF THE SPIRITs. MASKS FROM THE ZAIRE BASIN. Fig. 81, p.168. See also Maurer E.M. A.F. Robert

The Zande(Azande) have a rich heritage which can be documented back at least 300 years. Originally from the Sudan. They now occupy small parts of Sudan, The Republic of the Congo, and northern portions of the far east corner of The DRC. They have lived close to the Mangbetu for many years, and for much of this period they have been at war with them. Despite the fact that the Mangbetu were eventually defeated, the more well-known artworks of the Zande, like musical instruments, often display Mangbetu elements. In addition to musical instruments, primarily figural harps, they also produce curious small, abstract statuettes called"yanda, used in ceremonies to celebrate fertility. Works of the Zande are quite rare, particularly masks. Their uses are poorly understood but, like most masks from the area, are probably associated with a boy's coming of age ceremony, which concludes with circumcision. Zande masks share stylistic elements with a range of cultures, like the Lega, the numerou

The Tabwa are a tiny tribe of more than 200. 000 in the Upper River Region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerly Zaire. Tabwa art has only recently come to be identified as a separate style often confused with the sculpture of their neighbors or others who took Tabwa identity. Tabwa figural sculptures represent ancestors who were to assist in daily activities and during the hunt. Tabwa art is both a symbol and an aesthetic statement as the figures are often elaborately scarified in a fashion known among them until the middle of the twentieth century. Their carvings usually stand on a circular base with slightly bent knees and hands resting on their abdomen. Sometimes the hairstyle is a George Washington queue. The distinctive facial scarification consisting of a number of lines along the sides of the face and along the forehead and abdomen were the means whereby Tabwa identified themselves to localities and social status. Elaborate and attractive patterns and designs were worked into the skin according to the Tabwa concept of ‘kulemba’ that reflect aestheti

A series of carved lines on the forehead marks the transition form face to hair. The tightly woven cap made of small strips of cane extends from the back of the mask to allow the mask to be worm and supported on the wearer’s head. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With color pigments. Height: 29 cm. ed African mask from Igbo. Nigeria. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With color pigments. Height: 64 cm. Living mainly in the forested areas of south-west Nigeria. On both sides of the Niger River the Igbo number some ten million individuals. Mainly farmers and merchants, they also hunt and fish. They are subdivided into thirty-three subgroups and are spread out among about two hundred villages scattered through the thick forest or semifertile marshland. Only on the northern and western edges of the area, under influence from Igala and Benin, are hereditary rulers found. The heads ... moreof families form the council of elders, which shares its power with numerous secret societies. These societies exercise great political and social influence. They are highly hierarchical, their members passing from one level to the next. There is strong social pressure toward individual distinction, and men can move upward through successive grades by demonstrating their achievements and their generosity. The lack of overall centralization among the Igbo-speaking peoples has been conducive to the development of a great variety of art styles and cultural practices. The earliest sculpture known from Igboland is from the village of Ibo Ukwu. Where the grave of a man of distinction and a ritual store, dating from the 9th century AD, contained both chased copper objects and elaborate castings of leaded bronze. Ibo sculpture is subject to rather strict rules: the figures are generally frontal, symmetrical, and upright, with legs slightly spread, arms held away from the body, and hands stretched forward, palms open. Additional Information: This extraordinary carved mask with a transverse crest ... morewith brightly painted rays and the dramatic rounded eyes and square mouth mask is interesting in that it sets a problem of identification. Masks with these markings have been attributed in the past to the Tetela or Sungu people. A Tetela sub-group, neighbors to the Songye. However recent scholarship attributes such masks to the Songye people and denies the existence of masks among the Tetela. See De Husch, L. ‘Beauty is elsewhere: Returning a verdict on Tetela masks.’ In Objects: Signs of Africa. 1995. pp. 175-194. It is probable that such a mask was inspired by the Songye masks The miter-like form on the top. As well as the squared mouth recall some Songye mask from a localized identification to a Songye Tempa sub-group. If really Tetela-Sungu this should be considered as new forms of art among these peoples demonstrating a strong Songye influence. This mask reflects some of this crossing of stylistic boundaries possibly showing Songye style and other influences. If truly Songye, this mask would indeed be a variant or late style of this particular type of Songye mask. This is a late example of its kind that was probably used during the initiation and circumcisio

Kuba Royal Mask Bwoom DR Congo African
Title, Kuba Royal Mask M'Boom DR Congo Africa, Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Kuba-Bushoong, Materials, Wood. Hide, cooper alloy, beads, cowrie shells, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, Height is 13 inches. Width is 7 inches. Depth is 13.5 inches. Overall Condition, Good Damage/Repair, wear. Chips in places, rusting metal, dents, Additional Information: A wonderful example of one of the three accepted Kuba"royal" masks. Featuring exquisite geometric decoration. Intricate woven fringes with cowries and beads. This is beautiful example with adorned beaded face. This ia a royal mask known as Bwoom recognized by the bulging forehead the exaggerate nose, the mask would have been difficult to categorize. This is probably due to the diverse stylistic elements found throughout Kuba territory, ... moreas the mask has features more commonly found among the Kuba sub-groups. Bwoom" represents the evil brother in ceremonial reenactments of Kuba mythology, as well as the inevitable struggle for power among individuals. In these dances, Bwoom seeks both the mythical throne of his brother, Mwaash A Mboy, as well as the king's wife, Ngaady A Mwaash. Bwoom, a pygmy, symbolically speaks for the common man, with all the temptation and folly that entails. This colorful trio of characters comprises the recognized pantheon of the royal helmet masks, which are eagerly sought-after by collectors and museums. See SCULPTURE AFRICAINE, by Fagg. This mask has a bulbous forehead and an underslung jaw. Copper ornaments the forehead. Raffia headdress and beard are embroidered with cowries. And beads are found on nose, forehead, lips, and back of headdress. The raffia is hand-woven. This mask has a lot of presence and would stand out in any collection. The Bowers Museum Collections Department notes“within the Kasai province in central Democratic Republic of Congo are a number of very small, sometimes ancient ... moretribes who have retained their individuality. Among them are the Bena Biombo who are best known for their masks of diverse type. This mask with half-closed eyes and arched eyebrows radiates a peaceful, benevolent air. The incised geometric designs across the cheeks and chin indicate tribal scarifications. Although Bena Biombo masks resemble those neighboring tribes, the three appendages on top of the head identify this mask as originating with the Bena Biombo. Feathers are attached to the top of the mask when it is worn. A woven support of reed encases the back of the mask to provide a secure fit for the wearer's head and ruffled grass extends from the back of the meshed reed around to the front of the mask. Although masks of this type may have served other religious and ceremonial purposes at an earlier date, today they are used primarily for entertainment and masquerades(Bena Biombo Mask, 2007) The extraordinary Biombo helmet mask we have up for auction was formerly in the Lewis Pate. African Tribal Female Mask Songye Tribe DRC Democratic Republic Congo
African Tribal Female Mask From Songye Tribe- DRC Democratic Republic Congo(Formerly Zaire) Material: Wood Dimensions: 14" x 6.5" This hand carved African mask is definitely one of a kind. Although the mask is in overall good condition. One piece of the wood that holds the string to the right hand side of the mask has broken and will need to be glued or repaired to hang on the wall. Please refer to picture# 6 to see what im referring to. The consignor of this item and her late husband visited Africa in the 1970's and obtained some nice artifacts; these are from their estate. Please see pictures for further detail. The Songye people live in the Democratic Republic of the Congo(DRC. Formerly Zaire) Numbering some 150,000 people, Songye society is patrilineal, and governed by a highly revered male chief. They share common ancestors ... moreand oral traditions with the Luba people of the DRC, and subsist by farming or hunting. Because rivers are believed to be the repository of the souls of revered ancestors, Songye people are extremely reluctant to fish. The warlike history of the Songye influences the confrontational nature of their art. Songye shields. Once a vital part of the the warrior's gear, are still hand-carved of wood, and often include the intimidating face and violently zig-zagging grooves that would once have frightened the enemy in battle. These grooved patterns are typical of Songye pieces, and may represent the scarifications that Songye warriors cut into their faces. They are among the most belligerent of all African masks. The presence of a central crest on a Songye mask identifies that mask as male. The female kifewebe has no crest but plain coiffure on its head. The size of the crest on male masks determines the magic power contained in the mask. Masquerades supplement these masks with woven costumes and long raffia beards. Songye masks are easily identified by their striations and their shapes. The eyes. Noses and mouths are carved in. Often. The lips form star-shaped puckers to give t

The Holo are a smaller grouping of people numbering between 6-10.000 living in close proximity to the Yaka, Suku, Chokwe and Pende people. Coming from Angola sometime during the 16-17th centuries they are now settled along the banks of the Kwango River. At best the character of the piece will stand as a challenge to place among a single people and yet it has it’s own simple sculptural charm as well as magical potential in the cavity to hold substances. Though the Holo are divided into two geographically distinct groups(one in Angola another in the DR Congo) They still consider themselves one people and have a lot in common. Their art is almost similar. They are both well-known for their rite of initiation and circumcision and the use o
