Old Lobi Wood Polychrome Altar Fetish of a Sacred Bird- AFRICA An old Lobi wood polychrome fetish figure of a bird. Carved out of a heavy weight wood. ... moreThe neck is adorned with cowrie shells; traces of blue European paint remain. The carving is naturalistic and possibly represents a turtle-dove. One of the animal subjects often depicted in Lobi sculpture. The sacred bird is honored and revered by the Lobi and may form part of the diviner’s altar. Or may be placed at the family’s altar, taking a place next to the founding ancestors. Once they have gained their place at the altar, they are never again moved, as they have bee“planted” there and must be respected for the pact that they have made with the ancestors. Altar sculptures of birds are characteristically very naturalistic and size is true to nature. As the true forms of the bird are represented; posture, however, is dictated by the thil, or supernatural spirit, and instructions are provided to the diviner, or fetisher. At the altar. Food will always be present beside the turtle-dove, as seeds, wild comestible berries are central to the cult of the fetish. Nice encrusted patina. Traces of European paint, weight: 470 grams(1 lb) Collected in Burkina Faso. Origin: Lobi ethnic group- BURKINA FASO Age: Mid 20th century Materials: Wood and polychrome Condition details: Good with rich patina of age and usage Dimensions/Weight: 28cm(11" long-12cm(4 3/4" wide- 7.5cm(2 7/8" high Inner Diam/Ring Size: N/A Item# 20111061, Click On Buttons For Extra Photos

The"bateba, which range in size from four to twenty inches, are believed to embody the Thil spirits. They are looked upon as living beings, charged with special powers, who move, fight against witches, and have intercourse with each other. They are a link between the villagers and the Thil, and thus are essential to the harmony of the village. Lobi art, crude and earthy, yet profound in its own way, has gained increasing popularity among collectors. As the Lobi have always known, refinement and decoration are not required to stir the heavens, or move one's soul. Recommended Reading: See AFRICAN ART: ITS BACKGROUND AND TRADITIONS. By Wassing. The bodies will be displayed with a sinuous set of curves as though the snakes were moving through the grass. In many cases, the heads are simply defined as a triangular shape with the mouth possibly noted with a thin line beaten into the side of the face. The tails are depicted by a tapering form and the body has the usual undulated snake form. Among the Lob

LOBI THIL WORSHIP POST STATUE_African Tribal Art_Burkina Faso
LOBI THIL WORSHIP POST STATUE LOBI THIL WORSHIP POST STATUE Type of object: Post Material: wood. Pigment Ethnic Group: Lobi Country of origin: Burkina Faso Condition: Item is in good condition. Heigth: 47 inches(121 cm) The post was used to carry a recipient for tribal animist sacrifices. About the Lobi and their Art The Lobi carve numerous types of objects. Ranging from those used every day to figures that embody religious ideals. The figures(bateba) are recognized as living beings, which are placed on the shrines of thila and are able to communicate with one another and to fight off witches. It is believed by the Lobi that at one time they lived in a metaphorical Garden of Eden at one with the god and wanting for nothing. However. As their numbers began to increase men began to fight one another over women, and as a result the god turned ... morehis back on them. Not wanting them to be completely lost, the god sent forth thila to take care of the people. The thila are contacted through a diviner who delivers their messages, demands, and prohibitions to the people. The village thil is embodied in a village shrine but, since thila may leave the shrines, they are often uninhabited. Below the thila cosmologically, yet above men, are numerous bush spirits. The Lobi are able freely to distinguish between the bush spirits and the thila based on a series of factors, which at first seem quite confusing to the outsider. Sculptors. Who live off farming, devote only part of their time to sculpture; their period of apprenticeship may be reduced, so that the objects are of variable quality, often quite mediocre. The Lobi do not use masks, but create male and female spirit figures called bateba and heads sculpted on top of a post planted in the ground. Bateba is considered as a living being and may see, communicate, and intervene on behalf of its thil spirit. Lobi figures are between 2” and 35” high. In every house a small shrine room is set apart for the worship of ancestral spirits. Shrines are built to the thil spir

Who live in Burkina Faso and Ghana, revere spirits known as Thil, and build shrines to them, which are filled with figures like this one. These figures, known as Bateba, are believed to embody the Thil spirits. The Bateba are looked upon as living beings charged with special powers who move, fight against witches, and have intercourse with each other. The Lobi believe that the Bateba are superior to humans, but inferior to the Thil spirits, so the Bateba is first activated by putting it in a Thil shrine. The Bateba keep sorcerers away, and help the Thil ward off misfortune. They also play a role in the divination system. See AFRICAN MASTERPIECES FROM MUNICH-The Stratlisches Museum fur Volkerkunde. Old Sacrificed Lobi Wood Bateba Divination Statue Burkina Faso Africa
Old Sacrificed Lobi Wood Bateba Divination Statue Burkina Faso Africa An old sacrificed wood Lobi bateba figure of a female ancestor figure. Bateba are believed to embody the spirit of the thila. And once the bateba is placed at the household altar, he or she, becomes active. The Lobi household could have several altars dedicated for the placing of various and different thilbia- spirits incarnated as statuettes. There may be various stages prior to a thil being incarnated as a statue of wood, metal, or clay. The Lobi view the intermediary bateba figures on a level superior to human beings. Whom they resemble, but inferior to the village protective spirits or thila, from whom they derive their powers. The striking pose of the figure with accentuated body movement. Head turned towards the onlooker, possesses full volumes in fine balance with ... morethe angular forms. The artistic hand and personal style of the carver have been captured in this piece. Lobi statuary sets itself aside from the majority of African statuary, in that there exists a large variety of forms and individualistic styles. As is the case with the majority of Lobi bateba. This figure was placed at the personal household altar or brought to the fetisher's altar during divination seances. Traces of sacrificial patina.
