The Leti Islands are part of the belt of Spice Islands of the archipelago of Indonesia. Typical craftsmanship of the Leti art on this statue include the almond-shaped eyes. This statue is typical of the Nias Island carvings. They generally were used to honor ancestors. Such statues were common placed on wall plaques. But some were displayed in a place in their homes reserved for such purposes. It is 15 1/2" tall. I acquired this in Medan in 1972. Very nice Balato from Nias Tribal Headhunting Sword This is an original and very nice Balato from Nias(Indonesia) Nias is a small island in front of Sumatra and is quite famous for its ancestor art and tribal weapons. The inhabitants of Nias are know to be very agressive warriors and headhunters. The balato is the traditional sword of this Niassers. This one is from south Nias. That contained a lot of tribes in the old ages that fought with eachother. In the past every Nias man has to be hunt a head before his marriage. This very nice Balato still has the orignal rattan bands around the scabbard and a very nice handle. Set of 2 Ancestral Statue from Nias Tribal Art from Indonesia This is a unique set of 2 antique and authentic wooden Ancestor Statues from Nias. This statues man and wife(probably head of village) carved out of 1 pcs of wood in a"ancestral house" Nias is a small island in front of Sumatra. In the old days Nias was devided in aggressive tribes that used to fight with eachother. All the tribes were headhunters and all boys supposed to have killed a member of the other tribe(and bring his head) before his wedding. This kind of statues were used in Nias to honour the ancestors(forfathers) and get power and protection from the ancestors. Nias Island North Sumatra Wall Plaque Bawamataleo
I collected this wall plaque from the village of Bawamataleo in 1972(well before the island was a surfer's destination) It measures 19x33. I believe it is a post 1900 piece. Because the carving is refined as opposed to earlier pieces which were rough. The pieces I saw them producing in 1972 were very crude and they were not attempting anything of this nature. The ancestor fetish is a post WWII replacement. The original was probably sold to some soldier or seaman passing through the area. And likely it was sold in the port city of Teluk Dalam, or across the way at Sibolga. I have had it on a wall all those years. But it is time to move on to other collections. I have several other pieces that I collected on the island and in other parts of North Sumatra, and have already sold some. The remainder will come soon.

Up for purchase is this late 19thC to early 20th Adu figure from the Nias Islands This figure stands approx 28" and came from an important collection of Antique Pacific Island. The collection was owned by a well known Indonesian Art Professor Mr. Siriyah. This figure was from his collection. The figure comes with a letter of Authenticity from the former head of Bonhams in the African and Oceana and Pacific Islands division. Mr. Rodolitz with the ISA is now acting as curator to many of the finest collections in the World and I was lucky enough to have him authenticate this piece. Mr. Rodolitz stated that this was a fine Nias Island Adu or ancestor figure from Sumatra. The carvings of Nias Island are among the most spectacular in'tribal' Asia. They are recognizable by their elaborate head dresses and are generally called' Adu' ... moreWhich simply means ancestor. My figure measures 28" in height. Condition wise the figure is good save for an age split on the side of his head, however aside from that mar He is in wonderful condition and the wood has a very pleasing patina.The carving additionally is of good quality. This figure was most likely used by families and clans as a ritual object with protective powers. It displays a mixture of influences– the horns represent the curls of fern plants and the figure carries a European-style gun. This"adu"statue stood outside an Important Mans Home. This ancestor statue. With his European gun, guards the entrance to the house. In this way he protects the occupants from sickness and evil. I collected this shield from Nias Island in 1972. It was used in one of there ceremonial dances. You can see a split in the handle. And in a portion of the body. In the handle the user made a hole at the top in order to hold a knife and the shield at the same time. The spear which I have also listed I collected at the same time. They were still using them for hunting. As I witnessed on a hunt when a monkey came close to the village and all the men went after it. The monkey hightailed it to safety. Each necklace is made from brass wire onto which highly polished disks of coconut shell are strung tightly. Each has tapering ends and is fastened by a brass clasp flat button. Such necklaces were worn by aristocratic men in Southern Nias. Indonesia. They formed part of a Nias man's heirloom possessions and were high prestige items. They were a declaration that the wearer had taken a human head from an outsider group and had brought it back to the village thereby bringing creative and protective forces to the community. The heads were placed in the men's ceremonial house and also prominently displayed in the chief's house. In Southern Nias headhunting ... morewas associated with the nobility, masculinity and power.
