Congo: Large Tribal used Old African ritual sweeper from the Teke.
Tribal used Very interesting african object: a ritual sweeper from the Teke. Congo with a protecting figure. Priests use this type of sweeper in healing rituals. Inserting it into holy water and then spraying the assembled crowd. Wooden handle with plant fibres and bast string. Height: 75 cm. ed African mask from Igbo. Nigeria. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With color pigments. Height: 64 cm. Living mainly in the forested areas of south-west Nigeria. On both sides of the Niger River the Igbo number some ten million individuals. Mainly farmers and merchants, they also hunt and fish. They are subdivided into thirty-three subgroups and are spread out among about two hundred villages scattered through the thick forest or semifertile marshland. Only on the northern and western edges of the area, under influence from Igala and Benin, ... moreare hereditary rulers found. The heads of families form the council of elders, which shares its power with numerous secret societies. These societies exercise great political and social influence. They are highly hierarchical, their members passing from one level to the next. There is strong social pressure toward individual distinction, and men can move upward through successive grades by demonstrating their achievements and their generosity. The lack of overall centralization among the Igbo-speaking peoples has been conducive to the development of a great variety of art styles and cultural practices. The earliest sculpture known from Igboland is from the village of Ibo Ukwu. Where the grave of a man of distinction and a ritual store, dating from the 9th century AD, contained both chased copper objects and elaborate castings of leaded bronze. Ibo sculpture is subject to rather strict rules: the figures are generally frontal, symmetrical, and upright, with legs slightly spread, arms held away from the body, and hands stretched forward, palms open. Proportions are true to 11.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk.rp*76g%3E11%3E-13de5709251-0xfe-

Teke Fetish Figure from the Congo or Gabon
This Teke fetish figure stands about 11 1/2 inches high and was most likely made in the 2nd half of the 20th century. It is intended to be a powerful magical fetish to ward off evil. It most likely comes from the Congo/Gabon area of Africa. It has the characteristic parallel facial sacrificial marks and bent knees found in such fetishes. The bulk of the cavity is likely filled with a mixture of wood. Soil, plant matter or even possible hair and other substances. The substances are all encased in a dyed textile and it has a metal ring around the neck of the statue with a feather attached to the body. There are few pieces like this that are available for collection and this one is beautifully carved.

For example, figures known as"Matomba" prevent and cure illnesses and other figures identified as"nkira ntswo" or"nkiba" represent ancestors and were used during a ritual to propitiate nature spirits. Figures are not considered complete or powerful until given energy through the application of the magical substances into the stomach cavity, or placed as a ball around the figure. Ba'Teke African Mask Wood Polychrome Kidumu Gabon
Ba'Teke N'Tsaye Polychrome Wood Face Mask-AFRICA A Ba'Teke(or Tsaye- Ba" meaning people of) polychrome face mask of the Kidumu society.Teke masks of this type were worn by members of the Kidumu society during funerals of chiefs. Weddings, or other important ceremonies. This particular mask is an excellent replica from the 1980’s and is no longer being made. Stylistically very abstract in form. Kidumu society masks possess a characteristically flat surface, subsequently divided horizontally into two spatial areas decorated with symbols. The two semicircular areas have clearly defined eyes, nose and mouth. A chromatic palette derived from natural pigments highlights the surface decorated by geometric forms carved in low relief. The rear of the mask is fitted with an inverted"U" shaped section which fits the dancer's ... moreface and onto which is attached a twisted fiber which he holds tightly with his teeth while dancing. While making repeated rotating head movements, just like a wheel. The costume is complete with raphia fibers and plumage from wild birds. The very complex symbolism is extremely rich and varied; it had been explained to me that the ground of the mask represents the lake. Source of water and life, the horizontal linear division represents the mouth harp, the semi-circles around the perimeter of the mask represent the trees around the lake, the semi-circles highlighting the eyes represent a woman's breasts, the small squares symbolize the male, etc. There exists no written documentation as to the exact significance of these intricate symbols. Collected in Gabon in the early 1990’s in the Ba'Teke Plains. Teke Figure Janus Nkiba DR Congo African SALE Was $99
Title, Teke Figure Janus Nkiba DR Congo African Type of Object, figure Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Teke, Materials, wood, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, 12.25 inches H. x 2.5 inches W. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, shallow crack. Chipped hairstyle, smell smoke, Additional Information: Janus"Nkiba" Figure. Teke. Dem Republic of Congo/Republic of Congo. A fine Janus carving in classic Teke style. Non-fetish figures. Called"nkiba, are rare among the Teke, who use their famous magical figures, or fetishes, for a wide variety of purposes, from hunting talismans to fertility fetishes. The use of figures without magical additives is poorly understood. Teke diviners and chiefs will sometimes remove fetish materials, called"bonga, from a figure, either to release it for sale or to re-use ... morematerials that were proven to be effective. It is possible that our figure was a fetish originally, and then deactivated, although the even surface patina gives us little evidence of this. The carving of the head is particularly fine and powerful, and the old repairs indicate a piece of some importance to the owner. The economy of the Teke is based primarily on maize, millet and tobacco, but the Teke are also hunters, skilled fishermen and traders. They believe in a supreme being, the creator of the universe,Nzambi, who is consulted using statues and fetishes as intermediaries. Recommended Reading: J. Cornet. BACKGROUND The ... moreTeke have lived in the Democratic Republic of Congo since the eighth century. On the right bank of the Congo River. Their social structures are based on an elected king of a non-centralized state. His power is essentially religious and he retains the emblems of office including sacred objects, such as cock-feathered headdress, a sheath dress, a necklace and a staff. He is surrounded by three dignitaries and priest-physicians. Each village has a religious chief, guardian of the sacred objects. Familial structure rests on the chief of the family, whose power is very extensive. The Teke believe in a god, creator of the universe, and offer devotion to the spirits of nature. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwards I bought the Baule Fetish and the Baule bobbin which are still two of the finest pieces in my collection. It is easy to see why I bought them and why from that moment I have never stopped collecting. Teke Bateke M'Teke Carved Wood Reliquary Figure of the Congo Republics
The name Teke comes from this culture's involvement with trading goods. The literal translation of Teke means'to buy' Teke statues have religious function. But are above all all else are used for their magical qualities. The Teke have two sorts of statue: the Nkida which do not have magical charge, and the Butti which do. A Butti statue is only effective if it has been consecrated by a diviner or Nganga. The diviner puts a diverse series of ingredients in a small cavity in the statue's stomach. In these magical statues the ingredients might include: vegetable matter, animal matter or ground minerals. These reliquary statues of the ancestors are kept in houses and worshiped. Because these statues experience numerous rituals where large amounts of oil libations, red powder, fruit and seeds have been chewed then spat onto them, ... morethey generally develop a deep, rich, shinny patina. Bonga, the assorted spiritual materials included in some statues is called Butti. Often the Bonga is placed around the body with a cloth or placed within an abdomen cavity in the statue. Without Bonga the statue is called Tege. These figures protect and assist the Teke. Each figure has its own specific purpose which can ward off bad spirits, prevent illness as well as initiate good fortune. Provenance: These pieces were collected over a period of several decades out of collections from America and throughout Europe, including France, Germany, Belgium, and Amsterdam beginning in the early 1960s. The items in this collection have been identified by George Mack. A Teke sculpture of such scale and prominence was likely used by a chief or person of notable village authority. It is exceedingly rare that a Butti fetish piece would be encased in a larger Butti reliquary statue. This is an exceptionally rare and beautifully preserved piece from the early to mid 20th century. It makes an impressive and monumental addition to even the most distinguished collection of indigenous cultural art and artifacts from Africa.
