This elongated bronze alloy canoe depicts figures relating to the story of the Dogon genesis in African tribal art. It illustrates the story of the mythical ... moreDogon ark led by Nommo and sent by the creator god Amma to populate and reorganize the earth. The crocodile-shaped creature that forms the bowand stern represents ayo geu , a crocodile that killed Nommo. The seven figures seated in the boat are the original Dogon ancestors, who are frequently found on other sculpted works of African Dogon art, such as attic doors. The sides are decorated with motifs depicting snakes, another element of the bestiary linked to mythology. African Tribal Rare Antique Ashanti Cast Bronze Gold Sand Box
Fine Ashanti Antique(circa late 1800s) Asante Kuduo Bronze Gold Dust Box with mongoose figure on the lid. From the old private collection of the internationally celebrated artist and ardent Africanist. This is a rare. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa late 1800s) The item is about 3 5/8" diameter x 2 1/2 hight with lid in excellent antique condition. Gold dust was the medium of exchange in West Africa for hundreds of years. Accordingly. A range of paraphernalia associated with storing, handling and weighing gold dust was developed. This box is one such item. It was used for storing and carrying gold dust. It is cast in the manner of the gold weights used in weighing gold themselves- using the lost wax process. The lid fits in the box and fits tightly, even though it has been cast separately. The lid has been cast with a series ... moreof wave patterns. Indeed, the box is similar in appearance to the weights used to measure gold dust. Possibly, this was to divert attention from its contents. But equally, it is possible that such boxes were used as weights themselves. The box has excellent patina and very obvious age from many years of handling. Gold dust was stored in such boxes. It was kept inside the box wound up in a cloth. Spoons were used to ladle the dust from box to scales. And personal weights were used to weigh gold dust which became the currency used to settle everyday transactions. Each party to any transaction would typically use their own weights. The negotiating process not only would include the cost in gold dust of the items being transacted over but also a comparison of weights. Debate over the scales used and the purity of the gold dust(gold often was adulterated with brass filings) Even transactions as rudimentary as buying vegetables in a street market necessitated this process. Cast brass gold dust paraphernalia was used by the Akan who occupy a large part of West Africa including parts of Ghana and the Ivory Coast and include many sub-ethnic groups such as the Baule and the Asante. No damage or repair shows it was clearly a favored old piece remaining unchanged from the time of it's acquisition in the 1940's. Pieces such as this served as currency but also as a show of wealth. The minute intricate detail of this piece is most remarkable! This is certainly worthy of being noted as a collectors piece. The measurements are 4" across and 1.5" in height or width. The inside measurement is 2.5" There are 10 photos. To see them all click on the blue arrow at the end of the row of small photos. African tribal Tuareg bronze currency bracelet ethnographic art, Jewelry apparel
Tuareg currency jewelry made by the Tuareg people of Niger was a very popular art form as these people were nomads who traveled all over the Sahara desert. They were primarily herders and traders. Skilled craftsmen made elegant forms from brass. Silver, bronze and alloys. Most were worn as jewelry and were the principle method of storing and exchanging wealth. This bracelet is in beautiful condition. It measures 3.5" across and slightly under 3" from front to back. It is 1" thick. The wrist opening is 2" but would be uncomfortable to wear. A truly beautiful piece, very elegant but heavy weighing just under one pound. Pieces like this were used as a show of wealth and a means of currency. The color is light, almost with a slight silver tint to it. Extremely fine and elaborate work.

African tribal Yoruba bronze bracelet, currency, jewelry, old ethnographic art
This type of copper or bronze bracelet and currency were first cast in an elongated form and then beaten into the bracelet shape. After being cast in the lost wax technique designs were worked onto the surface with a steel chisel. The main function of these bracelets was decorative however they retained value by the very nature of the material they were made of as copper alloy could be recast into other forms. They thus were valued as currency as well as decoration. This bracelet is thought to be well over 100 years. It measures 4" across and a thickness or height of 1.5" and the inner opening is 2.5" The design work is truly beautiful and the oxidation adds to the charm and statement of age. Very heavy. Antique African Tribal Ashanti Cast Bronze necklace pendant talisman
Beautiful Ashanti Pendant. This is a rare. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa early 1900) The size of the pendant is about 2" x 1 5/8 All items are traditionally handmade by Ashanti jewelrymakers. Amulets and Talismans: One of the most powerful forms of magic of African culture is that of the amulet or talisman. This can be used to attract love. Life, health, economic well-being and all types of benefit. Moreover, once consecrated, the amulet can be used to protect from spiritual predators and any kind of damage used by opposing dark forces. Since the dawn of man the various regions of African have looked to occult sciences and sacred truths. To this end. Esoteric traditions have begun to blend quickly. These may offer tribute to the Gods or to Nature, depending on the various branches of African magic, Palo, Obeah or Voodoo. They ... moremay also offer later syncretic traditions; as a result you may find Catholic Saints or other figures in Voodoo amulets and talismans. Many would consider the making and consecration of amulets and talismans one of the most important. But difficult, parts of the practice. As a result, those who were able to consecrate such amulets were often considered the wisest and most important of the practitioners. They were greatly respected and feared, both for their spiritual prowess and their ability to deal with the hidden psychological condition of others. If we study the different lines that divide these beliefs; Voodoo. Candomble, Palo, Obeah, etc. we often find more similarities than differences. The spirits, histories and rituals are similar or in many cases exactly alike. We also find roots in rituals of ancient African origins, as well as the initial tools intended to help spiritual growth and the realization of personal desires. Talismans were often created in these ancient rituals. Secretly consecrated with the power of a divine entity or spirit. They were used for various purposes from what is now considered“white” Voodoo magic, to finding love, and even harming enemies. Tod

Rare Antique African Bronze Beads/Verdigris Patina/Estate, Archaeolgical Item
Rare. Antique bronze/brass metal beads bought at an estate sale of a Santa Fe collector of African art, who started accumulating his massive and varied beautiful collection in the 1960's and1970's These beads are very old, with a wonderful green verdigris patina, but the age is somewhat of a mystery. Here's what I have found so far: The bag that this strand was in had a tag stating"Sokoto. Nigeria; Ca. 300 BC; Archaeological find" Sokoto archaeological work took place on an offshoot of the Niger River. During the 1970's, after which these beads would have been bought, there was much archaelogical excavation in the Djenne area of Mali, by the Niger River, and metal, clay, glass beads, etc. from ancient cultures were found. There is an article on metalworking in Africa that states that metal working can be traced back ... moreto the early date of 300 BC, and another source states that beads of this shape have been made for thousands of years in Africa. Dubin's book on the History of Beads shows a similar excavated strand from Djenne, Mali and states that the beads may be from the late middle ages, c. AD 1200"when Western Sudanese kingdoms flourished and cities such as Djenne and Timbuktu were imprtant centers of learning and trade. It is not clear whether the beads were imported or made in Djenne" My new book. African Beads, Jewel of a Continent" by Evelyn Simak, is a wonderful reference for the history and trade of beads made in Africa, and it states that copper and bronze were late introductions, by trade, into Africa. They show an old patinaed necklace and date it as 19th century or earlier. So, I will let all you amateur archaeologists and bead lovers do you own research from here! I'm guessing that the beads are closer to the 1200-1500 date, when the old Djenne-Jeno, where excavation took place in the 1970's, was said to be abandoned. Necklace is 24" around. Strung by later people who probably found the beads in and around the ground of the older cultures. As a

This figure follows in the early tradition of skillful bronze casting first seen at Ife in the 12th century. This seated figure with a ringed neck. Its raised knee and a full abdomen is naturalistically rendered in a stylized replica wearing a skirt with a squared design patterns. The decorative pattern on the skirt as well as the bow at the side are similarly found on the seated figure from Tada. The pesent figure holds a carved horn in his left hand and the snake in his right hand. The facial features are classic Yoruba and similar to figures found in the wonderfully cast bronze memorial portraits found at Ife. It also is cast with the same care and detail as those early figures from early Ife. The large hole in the back of head was an opening necessary during the casting process. Antique African BENIN Bronze Tribal Art Sculpture NIGERIAN Princess' Head
Antique African BENIN Bronze Tribal Art Sculpture NIGERIAN Princess' Head Ref: BR220213 This is a large and impressive sculpture depicting a Benin Princess standing approximately 14 inches(35.5cm) high and weighing 3.9 kg. It was sculpted by hand and cast in bronze using the lost wax process. The people of Benin(now known as Nigeria) are descended from the Ife tribe and have been making bronzes in exactly the same way for many hundreds of years. I am not an expert; it is therefore quite difficult to date this piece accurately but I believe that it was probably made in the first half of the 20th century. Of course there is a distinct possibility that it could be considerably older. There are a few small holes here and there and a couple of larger ones on the head(see photos) There is also some oxidisation. Mainly on the face. Condition ... moreis otherwise good. P hotographs form a very important part of my description and therefore bidders are advised to study them carefully and to contact me for any additional information they may need. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa mid- late 1800s) representing a Horseman warrior. The item is about 10" x 8 1/2 ta. In excellent antique condition. The Benin Empire dates back to prehistoric times. The political systems that were monarchial, were well established before the fourteenth century. The Rulers of Benin and Yoruba had close ties, and by the fifteenth century Benin became and important power in the region. With the backing of the monarchy selected artists of Benin developed a special style of sculpture vastly different from the rest of the region. They produced many fine bronze and or brass heads. Figurines, brass plaques, and large rectangular ... moremetal pictures, which were used to decorate the Oba's palace. The Benin Empire soon became the largest of the political systems of the Guinea Coast and toward the middle of the sixteenth century; the Oba ruled an area. Which spread from modern Lagos to the Niger Delta. Back in the late 19th century when the British forces invaded Benin City. They were overwhelmed to find artistic sculptures cast in brass/bronze. They could not believe the technological sophistication and exquisite beauty and quality of these objects. What they saw was a total contradiction to what many westerners believed or assumed about Africa. The above was too much for the British forces to bear and they swiftly concocted excuses- The sculptures must have been made by the Portuguese. The Egyptians, or the lost tribes of Israel" The so-called"Portuguese. Egyptian or Israeli" sculptures eventually found their way to Britain and later to other parts of Europe, where it was first classified Benin bronze sculpture, despite it being largely of brass. African Tribal Extremely Rare Large Antique Cast Bronze Gold Weight Scoop/Scale
Fine Ashanti Antique(circa late 1800s) Cast Bronze Artifact. From the old private collection of the internationally celebrated artist and ardent Africanist. This is a rare. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa late 1800s) representing a GOLD DUST MEASURING SCOOP/SCALE. The item is about 20" long. In excellent antique condition. Such SCOOPS/SCALES were necessary because gold dust was the principal means of exchange for several centuries in West Africa. Large Scoops/Scales were used for bulk gold dust trading. Small spoons used for lifting the gold dust from the gold dust boxes. The Ashanti name for spoon is"N'sawa. Ashanti gold weights are also named Mbramoo(sing. abramoo) This is an Ashanti gold weight. Used in the measuring of gold and gold dust, which was mined and panned in great quantities along the West Coast of Africa, ... morehence the name Gold Coast. Gold was used in the Ashanti kingdom, now known as Ghana, in trading with outsiders, making personal adornments, and as an internal currency. Ashanti weights such as these have a variety of accoutrements such as boxes. Spoons and balances used to hold or measure out gold dust. A full kit would include boxes, spoons, balance and around forty weights; this was known as a futoo and carried wrapped together in cloth. The futoo would then be put into a leather container or wooden box. Or if the owner was a wealthy man, a cast-brass kuduo box. These boxes, full of gold dust, could be buried with their owners and dug up again if needed, or hidden in times of trouble. The weight itself is made of bronze or brass. Which was obtained through trade in European imports from the late 15th century onwards. Weights were cast using the lost-wax method which is still the best way of preserving fine modeling and detail. A Short History of Ashanti Gold Weights The vast gold fields of Africa have produced not only great wealth. But have generated trade and art works. In Ashanti(present-day Ghana) A set of scales, and of brass weights for measuring out gold-dust, the

The Greater Kudu. One of the most graceful of the tragelaphine antelopes, is a woodland antelope found throughout eastern and southern Africa. The Greater Kudus move in a bachelor herd, which can consist of 4 to 8 young males, through the thickets of the plains of Africa in search of food or a herd of females. The males can be distinguished from their female counterparts due to their larger size, horns that make 2.5- 3 graceful twists and the large manes running ... morealong their throats. They move in silence and heightened awareness on the plains, in the dawn, of Africa's Eden. They rarely leave the security of the thick bush-veld, rocky hillsides and dry riverbeds unless for the search of food, to avoid becoming prey to their predators. Predators of the greater kudu generally consist of lions, leopards, hunting dogs and unfortunately, humans. These beautifully shaped horns have long been prized in Africa for use as musical instruments, honey containers and symbolic ritual objects. In many cultures, the horns are thought to be the dwelling places of powerful spirits and in others are a symbol for male potency. This is an exquisite piece bringing to life the African kingdom. The magnificent creatures were cast using the archaic methods of lost-wax casting and stained with a brown patina tarnish to ensure longevity. They walk mounted upon a black marble base with the artist Milo's signature. The process of bringing a bronze sculpture to life using the lost-wax method is something you'll appreciate after taking this tour- Enjoy.
