This is a Yombe carved maternity fetish from what is now the Republic of Kongo. It is outrageously graceful and so beautifully expressive of the ultimate ... moreoffering of generosity shown through the lifting of a breast. The woman is kneeling and holding one breast up and forward. As if offering milk; in the other hand she is chewing on a medicinal plant. The teeny tiny teeth have been carved to look as though they have been filed into points. Tatoo markings are on all spiritual points on the body. The detail is very articulated and the form itself is very classical. I think it is a very special carving and have enjoyed it enormously and should you purchase it, I doubt you will be disappointed. It is approximately 70 years old. Size: 8.5 x 4 x 3" Hardwood

Well-used Yombe or Songye friction oracle. The horn coming from the Janus heads is not part of the carving but something inserted into the figure. I think ... moreit is some kind of tree thorn. The bottom of the oracle shows wear from rubbing back and forth, as the diviner would hold one side, while the subject under scrutiny would hold the other. It does stand up on its base without extra support. Abrasions and spotty areas of patina. Approximately 8" x 3 1/2" at widest point. Sorry no international buyers, shipping only to the USA.

This Power Figure has a very interesting patina. It seems it was held from the front with fingers wrapped around to the back as the patina on the front, ... moreback and bottom are completely different. When holding the figure as the patina would suggest, you'd grasp it from the front and perhaps use it as a friction oracle? Glass over the painted eyes, painted face, basketry wrapping around the neck with a very shiny patina, two cowrie shells on either side of a square mirror-covered compartment, and remains of feathers top the head. Condition: Good overall. Tribal repair, some damage. Size: Approx 16" high. Yombe Phemba Figure( Congo) Beautiful maturnity figures such as this ... moreare also part of the nkisi group and represent pleas to the ancestral spirits for help in conceiving a child. These figures. Called phemba. Were especially relavant to women who had lost a child or whose pregnancy had ended in a miscarriage. Although there is a degree of stylization. They are touchingly realistic. This is a lovely example. The square base is a common feature. As are many of the personal details, such as a rope tied around the breasts, the jewellery and the headdress, a sign of high status. The teeth are shown filed, a procedure designed to enhance the erotic beauty of women. This is a genuine phemba figure probably around 35- 50 years old. It has been regularly rubbed with palm- oil and has a characteristic of oxidized oil. There is damage to the base and cracks in the body have been filled with tree resin. Used for tribal repairs. This is a lovely old object with a quality of quiet pleading that is very touching. A very fine Kongo phemba figure.

These rare naturalistic-style masks, formerly produced by the Kongo peoples of the Congo River, are known to be diviner masks. According to Raoul Lehuard, ... morethey would be specifically owned by the nganga diphomba, a very important diviner and the only one authorized to wear a face mask. His function within Kongo societies was "to uncover hidden things, to name the perpetrator of a fault, to clarify the reason for an accident [...] to put an end to drought, etc." (Lehuard, Art Bakongo, Masks, 1993, p. 774)

Loosely connected agrarian group with shared cultural traits but diverse origins who live in north-central Tanzania. It was on the cost that they were given the name Nyamwezi, meaning people of the west(sometimes translated as people of the moon, because the new moon is visible only as it sets in the west) Ancestors and chiefs have been of considerable importance in the belief system and socio-political structure of the Nyamwezi, and consequently most of their art relates to these themes. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwards I bought the Baule Fetish and the Baule bobbin which are still two of the finest pieces in my collection. It is easy to see why I bought them and why from that moment I have never stopped collecting. The head of the bobbin or heddle- pulley which is after all only a functional object for the purpose of weaving seemed to me then and today as beautiful as a Greek goddess. The fetish moved me as deeply as the bobbin by its silent tragic dignity and its air of profound medita

Pigment, Raffia, ... moremetal, Nails, Seeds, cowrie shells, snail shells, Mirror, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, 11 Inches H. x 11 inches D x 9 inches W. Overall Condition, General wear. Some missing seeds, chips, Additional Information: An interesting mask with an intive expression enhances by the use of magical elements attached to the raffia costume and the use of red pigment and mirror. The features of the face are carved with great concern for detail and naturalistic expression that are often found in the masks of the Woyo and Vili and also the Yombe. All share in many of the uses of masks and figures with other members of the greater Kongo Kingdom. Such masks are used during initiations. Funerals of important individuals or may have social control functions or are used by diviners and healers. When used by diviners the mask exercised power in the same fashion as the well-known nkissi figures(also known as nail fetishes) that is also seen in this mask with the nails forming the coiffure. Prominently displayed on the forehead is a mirror that was encircled by small Abri seeds providing a frame of bright red color at one time. Color plays an important role in reinforcing the fine drama of the mask that is surrounded by a ruff of russet colored grasses that hide the head and face of the wearer. A series of carved lines on the forehead marks the transition form face to hair. The tightly woven cap made of small strips of cane extends from the back of the mask to allow the mask to be worm and supported on the wearer’s head. The subtle relief carving of the face with the slightly opened mouth with the red tongue slightly protruding sets it off from the face painted a startling black and white to indicate understanding and knowledge and the ears and tongue highlighted in red. The mouth shows white teeth against the red of the tongue. The white eyes are open to

The statue was given to me by one of the Belgian health workers who worked in the central part of Zaire. Where Kuba tribe predominates. She didn't ... moreknow how old the statue was but thought it was authentic. I have seen statues, similar in form, but of a female and child, that originated from Yombe tribe in north western Zaire, close to my place of work. Another suggestion is that it could be Yombe funerary figure. The statue is approx. 25 ½" tall and 10" wide(measured at the base) It weighs slightly over 11 lbs(without any packing materials) During the time I worked and lived in Liberia I started collecting African art. Both traditional and contemporary, I continued enlarging my collection when, few years later, I returned to work in Africa, in Zaire(now Democratic Republic of Congo) I collected these items for their decorative value and can not vouch that they were actually used in rituals, that did not interest me. All such items, which I am selling now on Ebay, were either purchased by me or received as gifts from my coworkers or missionaries I worked with while in Africa.

KONGO/YOMBE Tribe, Fetish Statue-D.R.Congo
MARVELOUS. UNIQUE KONGO/YOMBE Tribe Fetish Statue(Zaire-DR Congo) This amazing piece with dramatic and vivid expression. Shows their tribal art at its best. Item Description Tribe: KONGO Country: D.R.Congo(former Zaire) Angola The KONGO occupy the region at the mouth of the Congo River. Numerous subgroups go to form the vast KONGO cultural complex. Among which are the Vili, the Woyo and the Yombe. These tribes produce a diversity of artistic styles, with KONGO art being one of the best known. The king holds political. Economic, judiciary, and religious power. He makes decisions about warfare, regulates commerce with foreign countries, and receives tributes from his vassals. When he renders justice, he is seated on the skin of a leopard, wears a hat and a necklace of teeth, and holds a commander’s staff and a fan. The king alone makes contact ... morewith the dead, at the time of judgments when he executes criminals and enemies of the State. In addition to the authority of the king, the nganga consecrates medications and is in charge of the spiritual side of life. The healer works with the help of plants or magic. The KONGO demonstrate the extreme complexity of their traditions on major occasions. Such as the investiture of a chief or at funerals. Besides their textiles of great renown, the KONGO had diverse funerary art. Some of these statues were placed on tombs to aid the spirits of the dead to join the world of the deceased. Wood sculptures represent royal wives. Hunters, musicians, healers and their postures vary, while masks are rare. This statue is made out of single piece of hard-wood and has rich. Brown, shiny patina on the surface. Like other similar items, it has a stomach cavity(usually covered with glass, mirror or similar material) used for inserting magic materials“bajimba” pulverized minerals, plants, insects, etc) still showing traced of the same material which was placed inside. Superb African Yombe Kongo Maternity Fetish Figure
This is a Yombe carved maternity fetish from what is now the Republic of Kongo. It is outrageously graceful and so beautifully expressive of the ultimate offering of generosity shown through the lifting of a breast. The woman is kneeling and holding one breast up and forward. The figure is identified with the Yombe people who live in Democratic Republic of the Congo. Yombe figures are some of the most familiar of Congo/Zaire art. Male figures are rare. The 300.000 Yombe people live ... morein the Lower Zaire River, the region very important in the artistic history of Black Africa. The country that the Yombe inhabit is covered by forest. Primary Yombe social divisions are based on membership in one of nine clans. All clans trace their heritage to Mbaangala who had nine daughters whose names are the same as the clan that each founded. Yombe peoples more readily affiliate with fellow clan members, and each clan has its own set of social and moral rules. Historically the Yombe recognized a supreme chief, but today there are instead localized land chiefs who act as supreme judges and maintain a great deal of religious power. The Yombe are artistically prolific people. Such masks played an integral role in the real-life drama of prosecuting antisocial acts in Yombe communities. In this context, these masks inspired confidence in the divination specialist’s(diphomba’s) ability to dispense justice and install fear in the minds of people with guilty consciences. YOMBE NKISI POWER FIGURE D. R. CONGO FETISH BELGIAN GALLERY PROVENANCE
This is a very fine Yombe Nkisi male power figure from the D. R. Congo. Its abdominal cavity and protective mirror fragment are intact and still hold fetish material. The statue has a blackened encrusted patina with traces of kaolin on part of the face. Small carvings such as this would have been used for oath-taking and/or for healing purposes among tribal members. This small statue is elegantly well-made and well-proportioned. Judging from its sensitively formed face and its naturally supple upturned body stance. This must surely have been the work of a master carver. There are three age cracks on the backside of statue which do not in any way take away from either its appearance or stability. It is most probably a late 19 th century or. Yombe (Nkisi) Nail Fetish Power Figure. Yoruba Songye Yaka Baule Dan Bakongo
Superb Mayombe Nkisi"Nail Fetish" Striking authentic fetish featuring enlarged head with encrusted sacrificial material. As characteristic of the Mayombe fetishes this has an array of nails and blades throughout the body as well as a horn. Wicker cord and varied sacrificial material. As to the age of this figure-in my educated estimate- its should have at least 75 years in civilization plus 20 or 30 more when it was active and commissioned in its village.
