Bamana Chiwara Antelope Headdress w Hat and custom stand TjiWara African Mask
A beautiful. Vintage(30-60 year old) danced and used Bamana Chiwara(of which numerous spellings including Chi Wara and Tji Wara) headdresses appear in pairs for planting and harvest festivals. Carved of wood, they are worn tied to a basket on the head and thus are actually a headdress and not a mask. The body is hidden by a raffia or hemp fiber costume. The chiwara is the mythical hero who came from the skies to teach the people to farm. Tji is a word that means work and‘wara” is animal, thus a Tji Wara is an animal of labor or work. Most chiwara headdresses are part roan antelope and part man. Many chiwara have elements of other animals. The chiwara is one of the'societies" of the Bamana. The chiwara dance was originally a"religious" ceremony. Now, for many of the Bamana it is for a plentiful harvest. Comes with custom ... moremade black painted metal stand. See below for detailed description of the Chiwara and the Bamana People. We will also send you a certificate of authenticity with a much more detailed break down of thier use and cultural significance. SCROLL TO BOTTOM FOR MANY PHOTOS! MEASUREMENTS: Overall. BLACKAMOOR ALABASTER BUST OF NORTH AFRICAN MAN WEARING FEZ HAT. c. 1880's.
DESCRIPTION: Presenting a high relief carved ebonized alabaster blackamoor bust representing a North African man wearing a fez. The beautifully carved bust is impressively realistic in all its details. This statue makes an imposing presentation that is not captured by my camera. It is really a beautiful rendition of 19th century Orientalism. The alabaster was ebonized(black painted) making it most impressive. The facial expression. Beard and moustache, eyes are top-notch quality carving. The middle eastern attire was well carved simulating real fabric. Around the fez hat part of his hair was so realistically carved to show around it. Again, the pictures give no justice to this beautiful piece. This is a very unusual and quite desirable19th century theme carving. Ethnic Black African Americana 2 vintage photos woman in hat and Leroy
2 BLACK AND WHITE VINTAGE PHOTOS: Oval photo of woman in hat mounted on photo card. Soiled and chipped edges and small crease and photo of man"Leroy" in ragged clothing mounted on scrapbook paper. It's hard to give all the details so examine the photos carefully. These are a collector's lifetime selections of ethnic/black/Negro/colored paper items. I acquired this collection and will be listing the over 600 items during the next few weeks. Because of the numbers. I will do some groupings of similar items. There are many of these items that are crude and derogatory in their depiction of African Americans. They are a not so savory part of our history, but those who do not know history will repeat it, so hopefully these may remind us of what is the past, so we don't repeat it. The earliest sculpture known from Igboland is from the village of Ibo Ukwu. Where the grave of a man of distinction and a ritual store, dating from the 9th century AD, contained both chased copper objects and elaborate castings of leaded bronze. Ibo sculpture is subject to rather strict rules: the figures are generally frontal, symmetrical, and upright, with legs slightly spread, arms held away from the body, and hands stretched forward, palms open.
