Angola and the Congo Republic– the Kongo occupy the region at the mouth of the Congo River. Numerous subgroups go to form the vast Kongo cultural complex, among which are the Vili, the Woyo and the Yombe. These tribes produce a diversity of artistic styles, with Kongo art being one of the best known. BACKGROUND The Ngbaka are situated mostly south of the Ubangi River. In northern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their settlements were dispersed and lack of overall political organization; a hamlet would generally be made up of an extended family or patrilineal clan. They practiced slash-and-burn agriculture growing manioc, maize, sorghum and bananas and lived off fishing and hunting. They also raise chickens and goats for eggs and milk. The Ngbaka had a system of initiation named gaza or ganza: that which gives strength. Future initiates had to undergo trials of physical endurance and would attain a first level of knowledge by means of song and corporeal techniques, particularly choreographic turns. In the rites of passage, re-creations of ancestors played an important role. Circumcision and excision took place after several months spent outside the village. Large slit drums are common, the end of which depict buffaloes and antelopes. Artistic products include figures, masks, pipes, necklaces, sticks, musical instruments, and zoomorphic statuettes used in the hunt. Grooves striate the nose, forehead and the temples. African Tribal Female Mask From Songye Tribe- DRC Democratic Republic Congo(Formerly Zaire) Material: Wood Dimensions: 14" x 6.5" This hand ... morecarved African mask is definitely one of a kind. Although the mask is in overall good condition. One piece of the wood that holds the string to the right hand side of the mask has broken and will need to be glued or repaired to hang on the wall. Please refer to picture# 6 to see what im referring to. The consignor of this item and her late husband visited Africa in the 1970's and obtained some nice artifacts; these are from their estate. Please see pictures for further detail. The Songye people live in the Democratic Republic of the Congo(DRC. Formerly Zaire) Numbering some 150,000 people, Songye society is patrilineal, and governed by a highly revered male chief. They share common ancestors and oral traditions with the Luba people of the DRC, and subsist by farming or hunting. Because rivers are believed to be the repository of the souls of revered ancestors, Songye people are extremely reluctant to fish. The warlike history of the Songye influences the confrontational nature of their art. Songye shields. Once a vital part of the the warrior's gear, are still hand-carved of wood, and often include the intimidating face and violently zig-zagging grooves that would once have frightened the enemy in battle. These grooved patterns are typical of Songye pieces, and may represent the scarifications that Songye warriors cut into their faces. They are among the most belligerent of all African masks. The presence of a central crest on a Songye mask identifies that mask as male. The female kifewebe has no crest but plain coiffure on its head. The size of the crest on male masks determines the magic power contained in the mask. Masquerades supplement these masks with woven costumes and long raffia beards. Songye masks are easily identified by their striations and their shapes. The eyes. Noses and mouths are carved in. Often. The lips form star-shaped puckers to give t

Yoruba Gelede Helmet Mask, Nigeria, African Tribal Creations gallery, art, Yorba
An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION The Yoruba people are the largest art producing ethnic group in Africa. And are renowned for their copious forms of artwork. A largely agrarian society, the Yoruba are distributed throughout Nigeria, Togo, and Benin, and number in the range of 12 million people. Their artistic interpretations of people are generally rendered in a realistic style, minus the exaggerated facial features, in contrast with many other African tribes which produce highly stylized, even surrealistic or impressionistic representations of the human form. A highly popular art-producing group among collectors, the Yoruba are known for their numerous and elaborate art forms as much as for their history of human sacrifice. The Yoruba culture is subdivided into a number of cults. Each identified by particular thing ... moreit holds sacred. This mask originates from the Gelede cult, which focuses its attention on the power of elderly women. During Gelede festivities helmet masks such as these are worn on or over the head with a raffia costume, and danced in reverence and celebration. On the'cheeks' of the face are large identifying scarification marks. It still has most of its original pigment, including white(kaolin) green, etc. Color of the pigment is faded in some areas, but still represented strongly for the most part, and the piece stands well on its own without support. Wear and age marks are in evidence as is common, including minor age cracking, rub marks, etc. but the piece does not appear to have undergone any serious breaks or repairs. This is a beautiful, prominent, eye catching standalone piece, and a highly coveted artform from the Yoruba culture! This piece measures in at 10.5" x 10.5" x 11" With a weight of three and a half pounds. MEDIUM: Wood. Pigment NOTHING we sell at African Tribal Creations is made in China. Taiwan, Thailand, or wherever. All items are 100% guaranteed AFRICAN ART. Made in Africa BY the indigenous peoples of Africa. We have 100% positive f

African tribal nickel silver processional cross Ethiopia ethnocraphic art Z4
This Nickel Silver Coptic Cross comes from Ethiopia and is in perfect condition. It measures 17" high x 7.5" wide. It is EXCEPTIONAL in it's detail. For the Ethiopian church. The cross is not merely a symbol of Christ's suffering and death but, more importantly, a mark of his resurrection. The image of the cross is often portrayed in Ethiopian paintings in place of the Crucifixion, not only signifying respect for the dead Christ but also functioning as an icon that conveys the protective effect of averting evil. The numerous processional crosses held by priests during religious services and ceremonies also powerfully establish a space of holiness and salvation, and act as symbolic markers pointing out the way for the faithful. The exact age is unknown but less than 10 years. The subtle snowflake like design of this cross ... moreis very graceful and elegant.

And maintained their traditional objects and beliefs longer than many groups in such constant contact with European administrators, traders, and missionaries. The Baule belong to the Akan peoples who inhabit Ghana and West Coast. According to a legend, during the 18th century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the Comoe, the land of Senufo. In order to cross the river, she sacrificed her own son. This sacrifice was the origin of the name Baule, for baouli means“the child has died. Now about one million Baule occupy a part of the eastern coast between the Komoé and Bandama rivers that is both forest and savanna land. Baule society was characterized by extreme individualism, great tolerance, a deep aversion toward rigid political structures, and a lack of age classes, initiation, circumcision, priests, secret societies, or associations with hierarchical levels.
