The limits of the hairstyle, the stretched size of the face and the facial features are most likely from Yaure inspiration rather than from Baule. The Yaure are a smallish Akan culture. Closely related to the Baule and Guro. Their well-known masks"lo" were used to appease supernatural powers known as"Yu. The"Yu, though vital for life, could also destroy, so veneration was important to ease the understandable social and spiritual tension present after the death of an elder. Attention is focused upon the head with emphasis given to detailed face and neck scarification and elaborate coiffures. Baule figure sculptures fall into two categories. It is difficult to place this offered mask into a set category of well known Baule masks. In general Baule masks dance to honor visiting dignitaries and serve during funerals honoring senior men and former notable dancers of masks. The chest has the marriage date painted on it, along with the bride's name(Alma" We got it directly from the relatives of Alma. The wood and therefore the chest itself is probably older than the date shown. The iron parts and the(working) lock probably date back to late'800. The chest has some scratches here and there but overall it is in very good shape. This is a very nice chest that would be a great conversation piece in your countryside house. No comparative example has been found. This lost wax cast of a copper alloy mask(bronze or brass) could come from the Akan people of the Ghana and Ivory Coast in west Africa. Though masks are not normally used by the greater number of Akan peoples including the Asante or Fante. They are often found attached to various chiefly regalia prominent on sword sheaths or chiefly stools and hung n the wall. Such masks are said to represent the heads of defeated enemies and are shown with some evidence of local scarification which is rare among the Akan but often shown on terracotta sculptures. It is difficult to determine the age of this Brass mask however the attention to detail and the facial features show that this was the product of a skilled craftsman. This figure would be well placed in any collection. It is a classic Baule sculpture and an interesting figure inasmuch as she may be a blolo bla. A female's lover in the spirit world, a representation of the physical being with whom the male could have sexual relations in his thoughts. Idealized spirit lovers have emotions as do humans and can become angry with their real world lover who then must assuage their irritation with them. As a result, female figures such as this were placed in a person's shrine upon recommendation of a diviner to resolve problems that a male might have in relations with women. This figure reflects the Baule aesthetic of idealized beauty for the carving of the spirit lover must be as beautiful in her sculptural form as she is in her life in the spirit world.
