Damage/Repair, General wear, Additional Information: This bronze cast pair of figures are interesting and unique in their realism and depiction of traditional ideas in late style castings. The bronze cast figures are uncommon for the Baule however they carry traditional Baule sculptural characteristics presented in a modern idiom. The female figure is portrayed as a chief holding a staff in eacht hand. The details of her headdress. Jewelry, scarification and seated posture all attest to her being a royal or a lineage head. Fine modeling of her face is done with a realism not often found in African art. The seated position is an indicator of rank and status in this world and in the spirit world. The elaborate markings on their bodies front and back and their faces allied to the complexity and detail of the hair enhances their presentation as personages of rank and social status. She wears armlets and anklets. Facial features and hair are especially detailed. Used in entertainment dances are one of the oldest of Baule art forms. These refined human face masks are usually portraits of particular known individuals. Mblo masks embody the core Baule sculpture style manifested in figures and decorated objects– spoons. Combs, pulleys and the like. Lustrous curving surfaces, suggesting clean, healthy, well-fed skin, are set off by delicately textured zones representing coiffures, scarifications, and other ornaments. The idealized faces are introspective, with the high foreheads and the large downcast eyes. The elaborate markings on their bodies front and back and their faces allied to the complexity and detail of the hair enhances their presentation as personages of high rank and social status. Facial features and hair are especially detailed. The figure finely balanced and the well-finished surface reflect Baule sensibilities of representation and aesthetics. This figure was used as an ancestor figure or a spirit of other world. In fact. Baule carved figures are known generally as waka sran, meaning a"person of wood”. Such sculptures have multiple purposes and uses. They fall into two categories, the first represents the spirits of the wild(Asie Usu) that live in the bush beyond village boundaries. Figures of this category are owned by diviners known as Komien, who can read the future, heal as well as solve his client problems. The priest communicates with these spirits through such figures also considered as receptacles of spirits. Our piece may belong to this category because of the importance of encrusted sacrificial material on its surface. The second category of statues is composed of male and female figures that represent ‘spirit world’ spouses for their owners.

Very nice patina on this piece with geometric shapes and web-like patterns, with a rich chocolate hue along with green tinges from age. Appears to date ... morefrom the late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1880-1930. In good condition for its age although it does have a crack on the inside towards the rim as seen in the photos. This piece is most likely of West African origin, created by a sand cast bronze alloy method typical of the tribes Kasena or Baule from the Burkina Faso/Ghana region. The age and origin of this piece can only be estimated, and are concluded by comparing similar pieces from the time period and region it is attributed to.

Called “ndoma” by the Baule. Portrait masks are said to portray an honored person of the village who is celebrated during a ceremonial dance known as “Mblo”. It is an aesthetic performance in which this beautifully carved mask would be worn with a multicolored costume and danced in the most graceful manner by either the person it represents or a relative. The “Mbola” dance reflects feminine virtues including graceful movements and elegant dancing steps and celebrates her beauty. These masks are danced to entertain during days that the Baule do not work and they will also appear to honor important visitors to the village. The refined and finally carved face may be similar to the person for whom the mask was originally carved to represent. The closed eyes and pursed mouth indicate propriety and respect in keeping the eyes downcast with a sense of reserve that a mature woman will cultivate. Iv. Coast: Rare Tribal used African Baule colonization figure. Height: 48 cm. The Baule people is one of the largest ethnic group in the Côte Iv. ... moreThey have played a central role in twentieth-century history of the country. During the eighteenth century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the Comoe, the land of Senufo. In order to cross the river. She sacrificed her own son. Baule society was characterized by extreme individualism. Great tolerance, a deep aversion toward rigid political structures, and a lack of age classes, initiation, circumcision, priests, secret societies, or associations with hierarchical levels. Each village was independent from the others and made its own decisions under the presiding presence of a council of elders. Everyone participated in discussions, including slaves. It was an egalitarian society. The face is so sublime and sensitively-rendered that there is a possibility that this piece represents a specific person. Though most likely it represents an idealized female ancestor. Baule figures might represent the wild spirits(asie usu) that live in the bush beyond village boundaries and or the ‘spirit world’ spouses. The spirit lover figures are known as ‘Blolo Bla’. Though representing bush spirits the asie usu are shown as wild spirits in beautiful bodies. These figures were used by trance diviners known as komien and were kept in a shrine in the diviner’s house where the spirit of the bush could inhabit or ‘sit’ on the figure. Other figures in shrines served specific local ritual purposes. The obvious wear and differences of the color of the surface indicates some age for the figure and the remains of offering on the face reinforce the thought that the figure was once in a shrine where she would receive offerings. Her seated position with one hand resting on her thigh and the other offering her breas

The male descendant of Aura Poku still lives in the palace she established and is honored by the Baule as their nominal king. Religion includes both ancestor worship and a heirarchy of nature gods. The dance announcers the arrival of Goli Glin a zoomorphic figure or of kpwan, an anthropomorphic one. The Baule tribe adopted this ritual from the neighboring Wan tribe. Baule Yaure Face Mask with Bird on Top Ivory Coast Africa
Title, Baule Yaure Face Mask with Bird on Top Ivory Coast Africa, Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, Cote d'Ivoire(Ivory Coast) People, Yaure. See also Baule, Materials, wood. Pigment, paint, Approximate Age, second half 20th Century, Dimensions, 15.5 inches H. x 7.5 inches W. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, None, Additional Information: Elegant mask with raised scarification in center of forehead. And triangular ending and hairline markings. The Yaure are a smallish Akan culture, closely related to the Baule and Guro. Their masks, like the one offered here, are similar in style to those of both groups, but usually have a few defining elements to aid in their identification. The most common are the serrated edges surrounding the lower border of the face. The Yaure used two types of masks, those that were black and those ... morethat were brightly painted. The darker ones were used in funeral processions, and are highly-prized by collectors for their stark beauty. Known as"lo" masks, their purpose was to appease supernatural powers known as"yu. The"yu, though vital for life, could also destroy, so veneration was important to ease the understandable social and spiritual tension present after the death of an elder. Masks could not be seen by women, and were treated with caution even by the men who danced them. The ritual significance of masks in the Ivory Coast has been diminished by Western influence and civil unrest, but are still used for special occasions.
