The Mangbetu sculptures symbolize the ideal of male or female beauty. This beauty is translated by the hairstyle and by the geometric patterns and the body painting that are observed on the real individual in their personal appearance. Most of these figures portrayed existing people. The 40.000 Mangbetu are of Sudanese origin. The Mangbetu are famous mostly for their clay mugs and musical instruments, with statues and other objects being rare. Most of their figural art is distinctive for the elongated heads-which is probably an influence from the ancient Egyptians that filtered south into the Sudan thousands of years ago. Good condition with some wear as seen in the pics. The full-figured female torso that serves as the harp's neck is surmounted by two heads. Traditionally said to represent the Mangbetu's Queen Nenzima and King Yangala. The placement of the tuning pegs and strings to the neck are typical features of Mangbetu harp construction. The twisted copper wire depicts the geometric, dotted, linear body painting favored by Mangbetu women. The elongated heads represent the Mangbetu's Queen Nenzima and King Yangala. The popularity of the donnu at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century was short-lived, ... moreand the ornately carved harps are no longer a part of the Mangbetu's rich musical culture. It has even been suggested that the harp may once have been less important to the Mangbetu as a musical instrument than as an art object to be traded for economic advantage with the Europeans. Recent sales of Mangbetu harps at Sotheby's and Christie's have brough prices over $100.000. Examples of this instrument can be found in museums. inkfrog terapeak. I000000.

FREE SHIPPING U.S. Democratic Republic of the Congo The Mangbetu are a relatively small ethnicity comprising approximately 40.000 people living in the northern reaches of present day Democratic Republic of Congo. They were ruled by a king whose relatives served as local chiefs. Perhaps this is one reason why their arts are so homogeneous and with such a high level of aesthetics. The geometric lines covering the body symbolize body paint derived from the gardenia plant—the Mangbetu adorned ... morethemselves in this way for dances and special events. And to attract a lover. The Mangbetu also rubbed their bodies in pulverized redwood and palm oil to give their skin a coppery gloss, hence this figure's(and most other Mangbetu figures' yellowish skin color. In the middle of the 18th century the Mangbetu people left the Sudan. They re-located their kingdom in the north-eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their social structure is not dissimilar to other Zairian forest-based tribes where the men hunt and fish, while the women are left to cultivate the fields. Yams. Manioc and plantains are the primary crops, and some cattle farming is done. Unlike other Sudanic peoples, however, among the Mangbetu only the men are permitted to do the milking. Livestock is seen as a symbol of wealth and is often exchanged for bride prices. Ultimate authority over the 40,000 Mangbetu rests with a king whose sons govern the various provinces, which are divided into districts and villages. Most of them portrayed existing people. Usually female figures would have a hand in front of the sexual organ and in the back. This is probably a gesture of decency from women. In some cases the sex of the female figure was covered with"cache-sexe" or a piece of barkcloth. The statue presented here is a rare example of an art seldom seen on the market. The 40.000 Mangbetu are of Sudanese origin. They moved across the border into North East Democratic Republic of Congo(DRC) several hundred years ago and live just south of the Zande and west of the Boa-two groups that also moved into the DRC from the Sudan. The Mangbetu sculptures symbolize the ideal of male or female beauty. This beauty is translated by the hairstyle and by the geometric patterns and the body painting that are observed on the real individual in their personal appearance. Most of them portrayed existing people. The figure is well carved and shows signs of use. The 40.000 Mangbetu are of Sudanese origin. They moved across the border into North East of the Democratic Republic of the Congo(DRC) several hundred years ago and live just south of the Zande and west of the Boa-two groups that also moved into the DRC from the Sudan. The Mangbetu are famous mostly for their clay mugs and musical instruments, with statues and other objects being rare. Most of their figural art is distinctive for the elongated heads-which is probably an influence from the ancient Egyptians that filtered south into the Sudan thousands of years ago. Mangbetu art is a royal art, so most objects that exist are elegant, refined, and of great beauty. For more

They re-located their kingdom in the north-eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their social structure is not dissimilar to other Zairian forest-based tribes where the men hunt and fish, while the women are left to cultivate the fields. Yams, manioc and plantains are the primary crops, and some cattle farming is done. Unlike other Sudanic peoples, however, among the Mangbetu only the men are permitted to do the milking. Livestock is seen as a symbol of wealth and is often exchanged for bride prices. Ultimate authority over the Mangbetu rests with a king whose sons govern the various provinces, which are divided into districts and villages. Mangbetu art, famous for its realism, is a court art. Wooden figures are believed to be ancestral portraits. It was developed particularly in terms of everyday objects under the impetus of the clan chiefs who wanted to show off their power and wealth. Royal celebrations, which took place in large vaulted sheds, were opportunities for exhibiting objects of luxury and refinement: pipes, palm wine jars featuring sculpted figures and heads, tree-b
African Mangbetu Harp - Democratic Republic of Congo
Mangbetu aristocrats surrounded themselves with a wide variety of finely crafted utilitarian objects such as boxes. Jars, stools, musical instruments, and weapons, many of which feature figurative elements. The designs of musical instruments are especially beautiful examples of the ingenious amalgamation of a functional artifact and the human form. In more elaborately carved harps. The entire neck may be figurative. There is also considerable variation in the curvature of the bow and the angle of the neck's attachment to the resonator. The resonators come in two forms, the hourglass shape seen here or an oval shape, and usually feature two small sounding holes on the top surface. A variety of animal skins were used to cover the resonator, including pangolin scales, okapi and leopard pelts, and snake and lizard skins. In ethnic groups ... morerelated to the Mangbetu, the anthropomorphic convention is carried further and legs are carved below the resonator so that the body of the harp is also the body of the figure. Mangbetu harps have been studied in depth as art objects; their musical use. However, remains largely unexplored. Although they appear in historical photographs from the region, these rarely show the harp being played. As the Mangbetu enthusiasm for carving continued and harps became increasingly figurative, the ability to appropriately string and tune the instruments became increasingly difficult. Before long, the importance of the harp as a musical instrument was replaced by its importance as an art object. This evolution led to instruments that were completely unplayable with strings too close together, unusable tuning pegs, flattened sound boxes, etc. but undoubtedly visually striking. The harp first appeared in Mangbetu culture some time in the late nineteenth century. And reached its peak during the colonial period of the early twentieth century. Many believe that the initial practice of carving representations of human heads was adopted from the neighboring Azande peoples to the north. Some Mangbetu

African Mangbetu 4-Row Mancala Game Board
From the Mangbetu people of the Congo. The Mangbetu stood out to European explorers because of their elongated heads. Traditionally. Babies' heads were tightly with cloth in order to give them this distinctive appearance. The practice began dying out in the 1950s with the arrival of more Europeans and westernization. Because of this distinctive look. It is easy to recognize Mangbetu figures in African art. ~Wikipedia The two heads located at the ends of the game personify the appearance of the Mangbetu. The entire board has been crafted from one piece of hard wood. The board itself has been positioned on top of a stand that that uniquely lifts the game from the ground. This is a good find and an excellent example of a four row Mancala game. Dimensions: 49 inches long x 11 inches tall x 14 inches wide Depending on your location I would ... morelike to crate this item to insure its safe arrival. This is a used unique selection with minor scrapes and dings that in no way detract from the beauty or value. More photos are available just email me!

Rare Antique Tribal Mangbetu Female Figure African Art Sculpture Mask Vintage
You are bidding on an outstanding antique African tribal Mangbetu female ancestor figure. Democratic Republic of Congo. First half of the 20th century. Size: 16" x 4" x 3.5" 41 x 10 x 9 cm) This large standing female figure with high flat hat. Elongated head, and geometric scarification throughout body embodies the Mangbetu ideal of female beauty. Provenance: Private California Collection. Linguistic patterns indicate that the Mangbetu originated from the northeast. Probably from modern day Sudan. As they moved southward they encountered Bantu migrations moving northward. They finally settled in their current homeland in the 19th century. This area had been occupied by the Mbuti. The Mangbetu intermarried with and subsumed many of the Bantu and pygmy populations they encountered. In the 19th century the Mangbetu Kingdom was ... moreestablished under Nabiembale and became the dominant political force in the region until 1880, when Sudanic and Islamic slavers entered the region, fragmenting the kingdom into sultanates controlled by Moslem leaders. When the Belgians arrived they expelled the slavers. Very good condition for its age. Nicks and abrasions consistent with age. Mangbetu art. Famous for its realism, is a court art.Wooden figures are believed to be ancestral portraits. It was developed particularly in terms of everyday objects under the impetus of the clan chiefs who wanted to show off their power and wealth. Royal celebrations. Which took place in large vaulted sheds, were opportunities for exhibiting objects of luxury and refinement: pipes, palm wine jars featuring sculpted figures and heads, tree-bark boxes with covers decorated with heads, harps and trumpets played by wandering musicians, ornamental horns in worked ivory. Decorated thrones and knives were also part of the royal regalia. The Mangbetu tradition of compressing an infant's head with raffia in order to obtain an elongated skull is apparent in the statues. The elongation is further enhanced by a high coiffure finishing in a cup-li

Wrapped head with an elaborate hairstyle(chignon) and by the geometric patterns and the body painting that are observed on the real individual in their personal appearance.
