Among the societies public performances, three mask types exist: two grades of male and one female mask. Male masks are distinguished by a striated pattern of three colors while the female one is predominantly white with the features accented in black and some red. Superb Mayombe Nkisi"Nail Fetish" Striking authentic fetish featuring enlarged head with encrusted sacrificial material. As characteristic of ... morethe Mayombe fetishes this has an array of nails and blades throughout the body as well as a horn. Wicker cord and varied sacrificial material. The cavity that one day packed the magical ingredients(bilongo) is open after decades of erosion and handling but the glass eyes still intact. As to the age of this figure-in my educated estimate- its should have at least 75 years in civilization plus 20 or 30 more when it was active and commissioned in its village. Certainly the price doesn't reflect the real value of this piece. It measures approximately 27 inches tall. I acquired this Power figure in 1989 at a sort of antique shop at Brussels. Belgium. It was exhibited in a couple of African art exhibitions in community colleges in Southern California. Buyer has 7 days to inspect the piece and may return it if not satisfied. African Tribal Female Mask From Songye Tribe- DRC Democratic Republic Congo(Formerly Zaire) Material: Wood Dimensions: 14" x 6.5" This hand ... morecarved African mask is definitely one of a kind. Although the mask is in overall good condition. One piece of the wood that holds the string to the right hand side of the mask has broken and will need to be glued or repaired to hang on the wall. The presence of a central crest on a Songye mask identifies that mask as male. The female kifewebe has no crest but plain coiffure on its head. The size of the crest on male masks determines the magic power contained in the mask. Masquerades supplement these masks with woven costumes and long raffia beards. Songye masks are easily identified by their striations and their shapes. The eyes. Noses and mouths are carved in. Often. The lips form star-shaped puckers to give t

Masks with these markings have been attributed in the past to the Tetela or Sungu people. A Tetela sub-group, neighbors to the Songye. However recent scholarship attributes such masks to the Songye people and denies the existence of masks among the Tetela. See De Husch, L. ‘Beauty is elsewhere: Returning a verdict on Tetela masks.’ In Objects: Signs of Africa. 1995. pp. 175-194. If really Tetela-Sungu this should be considered as new forms of art among these peoples demonstrating a strong Songye influence. This mask reflects some of this crossing of stylistic boundaries possibly showing Songye style and other influences. If truly Songye, this mask would indeed be a variant or late style of this particular type of Songye mask. This is a late example of its kind that was probably used during the initiation and circumcisio

Pigment, Approximate Age, Second half Twentieth Century, Dimensions, 12 inches H. Overall Condition, Poor to fair, Damage/Repair, worn patina. Shallow cracks, chips, and dents in places, Additional Information: A well used Songye male figure. Many groups in the greater Congo area. And elsewhere, use art to meet the contingencies of everyday life through the activities of the local priest or diviner known as the Nganga. These individuals of great spiritual strength and inductive abilities use the rituals, secret formulae and sculptures to heal and prevent the activities of malevolent forces. Sculpture like this are known as Nkishi and often serve to divine the future, control one s destiny, and forestall evil-doers or to work magic and most importantly to gain the attention of the spirit world. Among the Songye and other Bantu language speakers, sculpture such as this Nkishi serves as the contact point between the spirits and the Nganga, it is where the ritual activity of the diviner meets spiritual presence. NEW! Description: Catalogue.

This mask has beautiful proportions and harmony, which is rendered by the balanced use of black and white pigments and mixed use of roundness and square features. It also shows gorgeous details in particular very fine striation work. Dimensions ... moreare 18x8x6.

Once a vital part of the the warrior's gear, are still hand-carved of wood, and often include the intimidating face and violently zig-zagging grooves that would once have frightened the enemy in battle. These grooved patterns are typical of Songye pieces, and may represent the scarifications that Songye warriors cut into their faces. They are among the most belligerent of all African masks. The presence of a central crest on a Songye mask identifies that mask as male. The female kifewebe has no crest but plain coiffure on its head. BASONGYE, BASSONGO, BAYEMBE, SONGE, SONGHAY, WASONGA) There are numerous mask styles associated with the Songye. Power objects and objects associated with divination are also prevalent in Western collections. In the past many Songye objects have been misattributed to the Luba and vice versa. Songye origins are shared with the Luba through a common mythical Songye ancestor known as Kongolo. Who can be traced through lineages to the 16th century. The ... morelinguistic traditions of these neighboring peoples are intertwined as well. It is believed that the founders of the Songye emerged from the lake region in Shaba province to the south in the heart of the Luba homeland. The Lomani River divides Songye territory and marks the boundary of the areas invaded by the Luba. As a result of these geographic and political differences there emerged of two distinct social structures among the eastern and western Songye and two stylistic differences in art forms between the two areas. The Songye traditionally relied mostly on farming and hunting for subsistence. Because the rivers were associated with the spirits of deceased chiefs who were often buried in them. Fishing was not practiced except in times of great need. The artistic wares of the Songye, including pottery made by women and weaving and metalworking done by men, were traded extensively with their neighbors. They were recognized as superior craftsmen, and their products were in great demand. The Songye are divided into about 35 subgroups. The paramount chief(Yakitenge) and his advisers are the central power in Songye territory. Many of the subgroups were actually quite large. Were o

The Congo Collection: Sweet Old Songye Ancestor Figure - Tribal Fetish - Zaire
This is a very sweet and charismatic little Songye ancestor figure from Zaire(Democratic Republic of Congo) which is already displaying signs of age and great wisdom. He is stands 7.3 inches in height. Is made from a light wood and displays a combined look of mirth and contentment on his face. He is at least 25 years of age and has features smoothed by handling and carriage. I picked him up last year in the D.R.C. West of Lake Tanganyka. This special statue is perfect for adherents of Santeria. Candomble, Palo Monte/Monye and Vou Dou as he is representative of Eshu(Echu, Exu) and may be used ceremonially. African Songye Axe
This ceremonial sonye tribe axe has a wooden handle and a copper head. It is a foot long and has carved designs on the handle.
The Congo Collection: Museum-grade Songye War Axe - Zaire - 50+ Years Old!
Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 I picked this axe up in 2009 in S.E. Democratic Republic of Congo. It is made by the Songye Tribe and is identifiable via the blade-shape and the distinctly Songye figural head finial carved at the end of the axe-haft. This axe is approximately fifty years old and was not made for re-sale or the tourist trade. It measures an extremely balanced 14.5 inches in length x 7.25 inches wide. There is a very fine. Age-old split in the wood, which looks like it was patched up 30+ years ago. The blade is mounted in the business-end of the axe extremely firmly- there is zero-wiggle. This Songye-fashioned axe is not a toy and was fashioned for personal defense and settlement of inter-tribal issues. The blade is held in place by three copper rivets and has a substantial level of superficial oxidization. ... moreThe anthropomorphic finial shows signs of decades of handling. This is a fabulous piece to have in one's weapons collection or as a wall-hanger. Standard or Economy Shipping will be for a Flat Rate of $20 within the Continental United States. Fine Antique Songye Kifwebe Mask Congo / DRC
This is a beautiful– and very fine antique Songye mask from the Kifwebe society. The Songye is a tribe from the central part of DRC(Kasai and Maniema) Although medium in size. It has many subgroups and its sculpture is widely known for its often spectacular and highly expressive features, whether fetishes or the Kifwebe masks. The piece here is of the white female type coming from the southern part of the Songye territory(where Luba influence is found) It is made of a light wood and is a prime example of Songye sculpture– with a large round head, round slit yes long elongated nose and square, cross-shaped mouth. The overall line of this mask is striking, in particular the combination of roundness and deep curves. Details are also beautiful, from the finely cut striation to the combination of white, black and red(eyes and mouth) pigments. ... moreThe inside of the mask was actually washed for desacralization purposes– which happened when ritual masks were either discarded or sold. Dimensions are 21x12x8.

Masks with these markings have been attributed in the past to the Luluwa. Tetela, sungu or other Sankuru peoples, neighbors to the Songye. However recent scholarship indicates most of the masks from this region do come from the Songye. A close similar mask from The Trustees of the British Museum. London and published in AFRICA. THE ART OF A CONTINENT p. 281 is attributed to the Songye. Our mask could well be a work from a Songye sub-group. This mask reflects some of this crossing of stylistic boundaries possibly showing Songye style and other influences. This mask may indeed be a variant style of Kifwebe type of Songye masks. Notwithstanding its origin this is a strongly carved mask with obvious signs of long use and good age. The Songye live in an area of savanna crossed by numerous major river systems. They have a long history of migration and cultural interchange especially with the Luba from whom they are said to have originated. They share sculptural styles with other prominent neighboring peoples including the Luba. Hemba. Kuba, Tetela and Luluwa. Kifwebe is the name for masks am

The face generally is covered with linear incisions which are sometimes pigmented, the mouth is most often square and protruding. Lot 81, Janus Songye Figure, Democratic Republic of Congo
The Songye created a sculptural style of intense dynamism and vitality. The works of Songye craftsmen are often used within the secret societies during various ceremonies. They produced a large number of figures belonging to the fetishist. Who manipulates them during the rituals of the full moon. Songye fetish figures vary in size from 4” to 60” They are usually male and stand on a circular base. Strips of metal, nails or other paraphernalia are sometimes applied over the face, which counteract evil spirits and aggressors and channel lightings against them. The top of the head and the abdomen are usually hollowed to allow insertion of fetish material, called boanga. These figures adopt a hieratic posture. The hands placed on a pointed abdomen; on top of the head they have a horn or feathers reinforcing a disquieting appearance. The fetishist ... morewould make the boanga with magic ingredients. Which he crumbled and mixed, thus obtaining a paste that was kept in an antelope horn hung from the roof of the house. The magic ingredients consist of a wide variety of animal, vegetal, mineral and human substances that activate and bring into play benevolent ancestral spirits. The face is often covered with nails, a reminder of smallpox. The style of Songye fetishes, carved from wood or horn and decorated with shells, is not as realistic as the classic Luba style, and their integration of non-naturalistic, more geometric forms is impressive. The figures are used to ensure their success, fertility, and wealth and to protect people against hostile forces as lightning, as well as against diseases such as smallpox, very common in that region. While smaller figures of this type were kept and consulted by individuals, larger ones were responsible for ensuring the welfare of an entire community. This figure measures 12 1/2" by 2/12" Bid with confidence. No reserves! P lease see my other auctions for great deals.
Songye Kifwebe Passport Mask DR Congo African

Overall Condition, fair, Damage/Repair, chips in front and in the back, Additional Information: Made out of wood this small mask is carved in a classic Songye style with crest and facial features typical of the Songye. However. This miniature mask does have striations and white pigment on the surface. The crest is high and indicate this is a male version of Songye Kifwebe mask. Kifwebe is the name for masks among the Songye and they are used by the men’s Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe society. The mask appears on special occasions such as funerals of important individuals. For initiations and can serve ... moreto search out sorcerers. Kifwebe always appear in male-female pairs differentiated by a large head crest for the male and a rounded head for the female. The use of such small masks is unclear. This small mask was probably worn as a pendent or was part of a shrine or a ritual basket. Small masks could have been worn for protection or in the healing process. 72750* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc. 2006 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers! Africa Direct. This panel could also be a contemporary example of a decorative panel made to ornament houses. The Songye can be traced back many centuries and were part of the old Luba Kingdom. They eventually developed their own distinct culture to the south of the main Luba population. And today live near the Lomani River. BACKGROUND During the 16th century. The Songye migrated from the Shaba area, which is now the southern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their history is closely linked to the Luba's, to whom the Songye are related through common ancestors. Having waged war against one another for a long time, the Songye and Luba later formed an alliance to fight the Arabs. Songye origins are shared with the Luba through a common mythical Songye ancestor known as Kongolo, who can be traced through lineages to the 16th century. The linguistic traditions of these neighboring peoples are intertwined as well. It is believed that the founders of the Songye emerged from the lake region in Shaba province to the south in the heart of the Luba homeland. Highly stylized masks called the Kifwebe are famous Songye tribal art. These masks have grooved pattern on the face and is a common characteristic. The white paint in the grooves symbolizes peace, light and the purity of the soul. Fetishes of all sizes were also produced by the Songye people and some may adorn multitude of objects which belie

Congo: Old Tribal used African shield from the Songye
Tribal used Very expressive African shield from the Songye. Congo. This shield with depiction of an Songye face. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With color pigments. Size: 50 cm.
The Congo Collection: 5 African Masks - Zaire - Lulua - Hemba - Lega - Songye
This sale consists of 5 different masks. There are masks from the Songye(possibly 2) Lulua and Hemba ethnic groups plus one mystery mask. Here is the break-down on age and condition. The Red-eyed Lulua Mask measures 12.15 inches in length x 8 inches wide. It has a chip missing from its left ear and several age cracks grace the surface of the piece. There are remnants of 40+ year old insect damage. Mask is solid. Heavy, dust and critter free. It is approximately 30 to 50 years old and is may have been used ceremonially. It is the correct size for ceremonial use, and shows signs of extensive wear and handling. The Hemba Mask with Rafia Beard measures approximately 9 inches in length x 8.75 inches wide. This is a very peaceful looking mask. Filled with charisma, which creates its own presence where-ever it hangs. It is approximately 25 to 30 ... moreyears old and was made in S.E. Zaire, about 150 KM west of Lake Tanganyka. The Rafia beard was obviously replaced subsequent to the creation of the mask. The Old Songye Passport Mask with Striated Face measures 10.5 inches in length x 4.4 inches wide. This is a sweet little mask with an awesome presence. It shows signs of extensive wear and handling. This precious piece is at least 35 to 40 years old and has a life of its own. The Passport Primate Fetish Mask I also believe to be Songye- but please correct me if you know differently. It measures 9.85 inches in length x 4.25 inches wide. During transport. A vertical strip broke away from the right side of the mask and had to be re-glued. Hanging on the wall, this is not a noticeable defect but it is evident while being handled. This small fetish mask is made from a rather light wood and is approximately 25 to 30 years old. The Unknown Flat Ovoid Mask from Zaire measures approximately 12 inches in length x 7 inches wide. It is made from a heavy wood and appears to have been made within the past 25 years. It is an interesting piece which may have Lega influence and/or stylistic design from neighboring tribes Normal 0 false fals
