Damage/Repair, chips in the back at rim. Shallow cracks, wear on surface patina, Additional Information: Traces of wear can still be seen on the face. On upper beak and in the back of the mask. This mask with sublime exoression comes from the Dan of Cote d'Ivoire. Masks with a long hornbill beak like this one are also found among the Mau people who live in the northwest part of the Dan territory. The surface as well as the interior of the mask show a dark black encrusted patina. The holes in the back were used to attach costume and other decorations. The Dan people. Who live in Liberia and the Ivory Coast, are governed largely by secret societies. The Leopard Society acts as a major regulator of Dan life, and initiates young men. Famous for their masks, the Dan believe that spirits, known as"Du, live in the forests and manifest themselves to humans in masks and masquerades, instructing and sustaining the Dan in life. Thus masks are used as agents of social control. Among the Mau masks with hornbill horns are used in the men's association, Koma. And are said to represent the spirits of bush called to establish order and are intended to exert a certain social control and chase away evil forces. Recommended Reading: E. Possibly older example of the famous"Gunyege" or"Zakpei" racing masks of the Dan. It is possible that the bells and fabric below the mouth are a fairly recent addition. These so-called"racing" masks were historically used in a serious game of chase, where the runner being chased, the mask-wearer, would be beaten if caught. The roles would then be reversed, and the captor would don the mask and, in turn, be chased. These games continue today, but are now forms of entertainment, and actual violence is rare. The Dan have produced an enormous pantheon of masks. Many of them of very high quality, much to the delight of collectors around the world. Considering their sheer quantity, the number of masterpieces is astounding. The Dan. Historically a warrior people, are thought to have been in the Ivory Coast area for perhaps two thousand years, though the evidence for this is scant. It is known however that the Dan were heavily preyed upon by slave raiders in the 17/18th century, and the creation of Liberia in 1847 was marked by the repatriation of large numbers of them. These returning ex-slaves eventually outnumbered their relatives in the Ivo

This mask was worn vertically on the face as seen in the eye holes drilled on either side of the nose. The back and surface of this mask and the attached costume shows evidence of long use. This piece is a very good example of traditional Grebo masks. Its double heads with large tubular hollowed mouths make this mask a special one and would add a unique piece of art in a collection. The Grebo live in southeast Liberia at the border with the Ivory Coast. With the Bassa people on their west and the Bete and We to their east in the Ivory Coast. Grebo masks are best known for their influence on early western modern art being found in the collection of Picasso who obtained a Grebo mask from his dealer Kahnweiler in Paris. There is no doubt as to the influence of the Grebo style mask upon the development of western art for they are a complete example of geometry in sculpture with the flat face, square mouth, rounded forehead, triangular nose and tubular eyes. The masks are fairly uniform in style. And most often are found in two sizes: large face masks used for dances and festivals, and tiny"passport" masks kept as personal talismans. The Dan also produce fine, figural"hospitality" spoons, and elaborate wooden"mancala" games, a popular pastime throughout much of West Africa. Though somewhat unexpected, the Dan produce very little in the way of formal statuary, and the few statues that exist are usually female and thought to represent"favorite" wives. Dan Masquerade Mask from Liberia. The Dan tribe is the best tribe for making masks in my opinion. I am an artist and just can't quite put my finger on what they do to capture the light in such a way that it reflects like a real person. This seems to capture the soul of the ancestors and captures my attention any time I see one. I can always tell if it is a true Dan mask because of the feeling I get when I look at it. Very life like. Very spiritual. You can just hear the ancestors talking when you see this mask! This mask has been used in real African ritual dances! Very positive vibe! This one is made with real hair. I think it is from a horse. Or other native animal in Liberia. Very very cool! This is from my personal collection and I don't really want to part with it. Both immediately recognizable and highly collectible. They can range from very simple to extremely ornate, are finely carved, and one could almost say archetypical of the'African Mask' ideal. Above anything, they are most interesting because of the beliefs that govern their production. The masks are considered highly sacred in the Dan culture, whose distribution ranges from Cote d'Ivoire to Liberia to Guinea. In many African cultures, the masks are representative ... moreof spirits, but in the case of the Dan, the mask IS the spirit, a tangible embodiment of the spirit itself. There are a variety of Dan face masks, each of which has a different function. They may be an intermediary, who acts between the village and the forest in initiation camps, wherein adolescent boys are segregated from the general population, or may act to work against brush fires during the dry season. They may also be used in pre-war ceremonies, for peace-making ceremonies, or simply for games and entertainment purposes. A common form of mask among the Dan people. The"passport" mask, as it is referred to by western cultures, was often carried by those traveling away from their village, and they were said to offer protection during such times. The masks could also be used to bear as a witness during an initiation ceremony. Often carried on the small of the back, these masks rarely exceeded ten inches in length. This passport mask is a very common form, featuring the typical bulged forehead, narrowed eyes, pursed lips, and dark patina. Its exterior displays very few tooling marks, and the interior is, as is usually the case, more roughly rendered. It s

The roles would then be reversed, and the captor would don the mask and, in turn, be chased. These games continue today, but are now forms of entertainment. It is difficult to determine the age and the function of this mask. However the piece itself is the product of a skilled craftsman. Based on the holes around the mask, it seems like the mask was worn on the face. But there is no indication that this was the case. As for their neighbors the Baule where the Dan may have borrowed the lost wax cast of a copper alloy, bronze or brass mask technique, such masks were not worn on the face but they were used as chiefly regalia attached to sword sheaths or chiefly stools. They are said to represent the heads of defeated enemies. Though its date is indeterminate. Either early or late, this well cast mask is a rare example of Dan metal working and would certainly hold a promi

This piece is unique by its forms, its projecting open mouth, and its horns. Among the Dan masks of this type belongs to the category of Gagon masks also known as judge masks. Gagon masks were used to maintain social order in the community. Little is known about the use of such masks among the Grebo. Most of the Grebo masks of this kind were worn by leaders as a kind of military costume during a time of war. The masks were worn to terrify the enemy. Though not worn for warfare today they are worn at the funeral ceremonies of elders. This mask was worn on the face as seen in the eyeholes drilled on either side of the nose. They inhabit the forests as bush spirits and must establish a relationship with a person if they wish to be manifested and honored. BACKGROUND Dan people live in the ... morewestern part of the West Coast and into Liberia where the land is forested in the south and bordered by savannah in the north. They make their living from framing cocoa. Rice and manioc. Before unifying secret societies were set up at the turn of the century, each Dan village was an autonomous socio-political unit governed by a chief elected on the base of his wealth and social position. Slaves were finally emancipated in the USA, after centuries of brutal oppression and exploitation. Some of these people came back to Africa and live in present day Liberia. Although they still practiced some of the traditions, they were a mixed group of people that practiced different customs. Neighboring tribes mainly from the West Coast influenced them and the dominant Dan tribe took root in Liberia. Today, the leopard society acts as a major regular of Dan life and initiates young men during their isolated periods of three to four months in the forest. Grebo masks are best known for their influence on early western modern art being found ... morein the collection of Picasso who obtained a Grebo mask from his dealer Kahnweiler in Paris. There is no doubt as to the influence of the Grebo style mask upon the development of western art for they are a complete example of geometry in sculpture with the flat face, square mouth, rounded forehead, triangular nose and tubular eyes. The startling geometry of this mask with two bulging foreheads, open triangular shaped eyes, and the long and strong zoomorphic snout as well as the jutting cheeks are off Grebo style. Little is known about the use of masks among the Grebo other than the fact that they are said to have been worn during wars by leaders as a kind of military costume. Such masks were worn by the leaders of a warrior’s age set lead and terrify the enemy. Though not worn for warfare today they are worn at the funeral ceremonies of elders. This mask was worn vertically on the face as seen in the eyeholes drilled on either side of the nose. The back and surface of this mask and the attached costume shows evidence of long use. This piece is a very good example of traditional Grebo masks. Its double heads make this mask a special one and would add a unique piece of art in

Lot 71, Dan Maou Mask, Liberia
The Dan masks were used during initiation ceremonies. These types of masks are made and worn exclusively. By male dancers. The Dan people classify surroundings into two realms- the village with all inhabitants(human realm) And the forest(bon) spirit realm) where the spirits reign, and wild animals roam freely. The forest is regarded as sacred. And crossing the boundary between the human realm, and the spirit realm, may only be done by saying a prayer and wearing materials from both worlds. This creates a link between the two realms. The mask depicted above is a perfect example of the materials. Once the male ... moremask dancer dons the mask. He is transformed into a spirit.
