Title, Songye Kifwebe Passport Mask Male DR Congo African, Type of Object, mask, Country of Origin, Democratic Republic of Congo, People, Songye, Materials, ... moreWood, Approximate Age, second half 20th Century, Dimensions, 3.5 inches H. x 2.25 Inches W. Overall Condition, fair, Damage/Repair, chips in front and in the back, Additional Information: Made out of wood this small mask is carved in a classic Songye style with crest and facial features typical of the Songye. However. This miniature mask does have striations and white pigment on the surface. The crest is high and indicate this is a male version of Songye Kifwebe mask. Kifwebe is the name for masks among the Songye and they are used by the men’s Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe society. The mask appears on special occasions such as funerals of important individuals. For initiations and can serve to search out sorcerers. Kifwebe always appear in male-female pairs differentiated by a large head crest for the male and a rounded head for the female. The use of such small masks is unclear. This small mask was probably worn as a pendent or was part of a shrine or a ritual basket. Small masks could have been worn for protection or in the healing process. 72750* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc. 2006 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers! Africa Direct. Their history is closely linked to the Luba's, to whom the Songye are related through common ancestors. Having waged war against one another for a long time, the Songye and Luba later formed an alliance to fight the Arabs. Songye origins are shared with the Luba through a common mythical Songye ancestor known as Kongolo, who can be traced through lineages to the 16th century. The linguistic traditions of these neighboring peoples are intertwined as well. It is believed that the founders of the Songye emerged from the lake region in Shaba province to the south in the heart of the Luba homeland. Older SONGYE Male Kifwebe Mask - Low Opening Bid! CONGO
Male Songye Kifwebe Mask 18" x 10" x 7" Very mysterious vibe. Seems to have some age. Native repairs to face. Shows signs of actual tribal use From my personal collection. Acquired from a longtime collector. Additional Information: This mask belongs to the most famous of the Songye masks. Made for the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe Secret society. Kifwebe" means"Mask" in the Songye language. The face generally is covered with linear incisions which are sometimes pigmented, the mouth is most often square and protruding. If it has a central crest, it is masculine; if not, feminine. The size of the crest determines the magical power of the mask. During initiation, circumcision, or funeral ceremonies. For examples, and more information, see Bacquart's TRIBAL ARTS OF AFRICA and Cornet's A SURVEY OF ZAIRIAN ART-THE BRONSON ... moreCOLLECTION. According to Hersak(1985: 168) The striated masks, or kifwebe, are used as agents of a tradition and figures of authority to exercise social and political control through practices of evil magic and witchcraft by the members of the bwadi bwa kifwebe society. Among the societies' public performances, three mask types exist: two grades of male and one female mask. Male masks are distinguished by a striated pattern of three colors while the female one is predominantly white with the features accented in black and some red. The Kifwebe tradition which exists also among the Luba, seems to have originated south of the eastern chiefdom in an area of Luba/Songe admixture. The Songe confirm this provenance by the interpretation that the kifwebe striations relate(apart from the zebra) to a pugnacious species of striped bushbuck antelope which inhabited the area. Fascinating, Exciting African Tribal Mask SONGYE KIFWEBE Female Mask African Art
Kifwebe Mask from the Songye of the Congo Here. In my humble opinion, is a rare example of true"ethnographic art. I admit to being a"kifwebe addict. with a deep love for the art form, and so I'm selling some of my pieces to make way for more. Here's what excited me about this mask. Here's an excerpt from the amazing book. An African World: The Basongye Village of Lupupa Ngye. Published in 1974 by Alan P. Merriam(p. 144) The masks were made by specialists; once completed. The mulawe mixture(unknown contents) was made and. In the presence of the society members, rubbed on the mask. It is this magic which'activates' the mask. And the wearer enters into a special state: when you wear the kifwebe, you become something else. This state is known as bwadi. And the person who enters it by donning the mask is no longer ... morehuman, nor is he a spirit; he becomes kifwebe. I have no idea what's made the patination on this mask. But to me it looks like the mask has been used in some tribal context. FUN COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS Note the(final) picture from the seminal work. Beauty and the Beasts by Marc Leo Felix. Showing a mask from the Stewart J. Warkow collection. Final picture. Note the similarity of the crest. Eyes(horizontal stripe) nose and mouth. The size of the mask in the Beauty and the Beasts is 14 inches(36 cm) This mask is also 14 inches. To me that's also exciting. OTHER NOTES Note the unevenness of the holes. Masks made in the traditional method employ an iron adze. And are less concerned about how even the spacing between holes is. Masks are not created to be"art" as we think of it, to be hung on a wall; they serve a practical function. In the case of the Songye, most functions are magical; as part of the Bwadi Bwa(or Bwadi Ka) society, from protecting the village from lightning to helping crops grow, welcoming visitors, policing(in some cases) all generally with the thought of pleasing(or at least avoiding any ill effects from) their god Efile Mukulu. The type of magic pra

AUTHENTIC FEMALE KIFWEBE MASK FROM SONGYE TRIBE
RARE! AUTHENTIC FEMALE KIFWEBE MASK FROM SONGYE TRIBE The most well known and highly sought after mask of the Songye tribe is known as the"Kifwebe" mask. These masks are typically associated with abstract shapes as well as beautiful textured lines and linear scarifications. The facial elements are associated with animals. The oval shaped eyes appear to resemble that of a crocodile, the black& white stripes of a zebra. The nose in most instances seems to appear triangular and the mouth is always protruding and geometrically shaped. rectangular, square, half circle etc) For more examples, see Bacquart's TRIBAL ARTS OF AFRICA and Cornet's A SURVEY OF ZAIRIAN ART-THE BRONSON COLLECTION. The Songye tribe uses this type of masks during ceremonies. And at the funeral processions of important leaders. According to the Songye ... moretribe, when certain individuals of the Kifwebe society wear the mask along with the costume and raffia beard(Mine does not have the raffia) they are believed to gain magical powers that can manipulate evil spirits. The striated masks are used as agents of a tradition and figures of authority to exercise social and political control through practices of evil magic and witchcraft by the members of the bwadi bwa kifwebe society. Among the societies' public performances. Three mask types exist: two grades of male and one female mask. Male masks are distinguished by a striated pattern of three colors while the female one is predominantly white with the features accented in black. This is a excellent example of a female Kifwebe mask circa 1940- 1950. Please read my feedback& buy with confidence!

AFRICA Congo Luba mask Kifwebe- hammered metal on wood 12"diameter I'm not an expert. But my research indicates this to be a kifwebe Luba mask from the Republic of the Congo. It does not appear to be made for the export/decoration trade. It"feels" more authentically mystical than that. The hammered metal. I assume to be tin. The"dots" shells, and the black highlites- rubber from a tire. I don't know the type of wood. There is no reserve on the bidding. it's approximately 12" in diameter.

Sculpture like this are known as Nkishi and often served to divine the future. Control one's destiny, and forestall evil-doers or to work magic and most importantly ... moreto gain the attention of the spirit world. Among the Songye, such figures generally served a common purpose as ‘objects of power’. When represented by two bodies or heads, these carvigs are supposed to embody more power than single ones. NKishi(sing. or Makishi(plural) have different magical substances that the owner, the ritual and magical ‘specialist’, Nganga considers important to give the figure power to act and the magical substances that load a figure with power are called bishimba. Nkishi also serves as the contact point between the spirits and the Nganga, it is where the ritual activity of the diviner meets spiritual presence. The age of the object can be seen in the wear of the surface through long use and the accumulation of magical elements. This sculpture would stand well in a serious collection. The Songye people live on the left bank of the Lualaba River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Songye style is identified here by the strong body. The jutting square chin and geometric nose with the eyes and brows artistically prominent. Symbolical elements such as the horn encrusted in the middle of both heads and the white pigment on each

Stains, Additional Information: ... moredditional Information: This extraordinary carved mask with a transverse crest with brightly painted rays and the dramatic rounded eyes and square mouth mask is interesting in that it sets a problem of identification. Masks with these markings have been attributed in the past to the Tetela or Sungu people. A Tetela sub-group, neighbors to the Songye. However recent scholarship attributes such masks to the Songye people and denies the existence of masks among the Tetela. See De Husch, L. ‘Beauty is elsewhere: Returning a verdict on Tetela masks.’ In Objects: Signs of Africa. 1995. pp. 175-194. Notwithstanding its origin this is a strongly carved mask with obvious signs of long use and some patination on the inside gained through time. It is probable that such a mask was inspired by the Songye masks The miter-like form on the top. As well as the squared mouth recall some Songye mask from a localized identification to a Songye Tempa sub-group. If really Tetela-Sungu this should be considered as new forms of art among these peoples demonstrating a strong Songye influence. This mask reflects some of this crossing of stylistic boundaries possibly showing Songye style

The Kifwebe tradition which exists also among the Luba, seems to have originated south of the eastern chiefdom in an area of Luba/Songe admixture. The Songye confirm this provenance by the interpretation that the kifwebe striations relate(apart from the zebra) to a pugnacious species of striped bushbuck antelope which inhabited the area. Beautiful Antique Eastern Luba Kifwebe Face Mask 2 - Congo Zaire / DRC
This is a beautiful antique Luba face mask from the Katanga region in South East DRC. The Luba is a large tribe whose establishment as an organized power can be traced back to the 16 th c. The Luba Empire then expanded through the 19 th c. before eroding in part due to the European colonization. As a major center of power. The Luba civilization produced a vast number of political and royal insignia(staff, spears, knifes, axles, cups, headrests, stools, etc. as well as masks. Eastern Luba refers to a group located at the most eastern part of Luba territory– of mixed origin(Luba, Hemba, Buyu) and at the time vassals of the Luba King. Eastern Luba also carved a variety of objects(of power and ritual) and masks– which incorporate elements of the main Luba group and from the other originating tribes. Luba actually produced round face masks– sometimes ... moreassociated to the Kifwebe of neighboring Songye. The piece here is round in shape- with a thin nose forming a tiny crest on the upper part of the mask. It has slit eyes and mouth. The mask is entirely covered in small striations except for a zone around the eyes and mouth that is covered with a brown patina. This is an unusual mask. It shows a slight(indigenous) restoration on the chin. Dimensions are approximately 12x10.
Fine Large Antique Songye Kifwebe Mask Congo Zaire / DRC
This is a beautiful– and very fine antique Songye mask from the Kifwebe society. The Songye is a tribe from the central part of DRC(Kasai and Maniema) Although medium in size. It has many subgroups and its sculpture is widely known for its often spectacular and highly expressive features, whether fetishes or the Kifwebe masks. The piece here is of the male type- characterized by the very large crest(symbolizing an elder or important person) Kifwebe Songye masks with extreme features(like the protruding eyes and mouth) were produced from the 1920s through the 70s. I believe(judging by style and patina) the piece here to be an early piece. It is made of a medium wood, with a very large crest on top, relatively small eyes, a square, cross shaped mouth. The entire masked is striated and shows a succession of green, white and reddish pigments- ... moreall of which had a symbolic meaning among the Songye. The inside of the mask show an excellent, dark patina. This is a large, spectacular mask. Dimensions are approximately 27x15. FINE OLD SONGYE KIFWEBE BONE AMULET PASSORT MASK FAMILY PROVENANCE
Here is a small bone amulet in the form of a pendant with two holes for stringing. It was made by the Songye people of the Congo. In the form of their famous Kifwebe masks. Covered with linear incisions, a square protruding mouth and a linear nose. These masks were made for initiation and ceremonial purposes of the tribe’s Bwandi Bwa Kifwebe secret society. This small bone amulet would probably have served a related purpose and would have been used as a means of identification in a similar manner to the so-called passport masks used in many African societies. This piece dates to. At least, the early part of the 20 th century. Judging from the mellow honey-colored patina and the slight splitting into layers of one corners of this pendant. The back part of this pendant has developed a much darker brown patina. This was collected by my aunt ... morewhile she was working as a teacher in Africa during the 1960’s. Spectacular SONGYE Tribe 'Kifwebe' Mask-D.R.Congo
MAGNIFICENT, SONGYE Tribe. Kifwebe’ Mask(Zaire-D.R. Congo) Female ceremonial mask of Kifwebe secret society with its unique scary expression emphasized by protruding eyes and mouth as well as paraphernalia and grass beard. Was used in SONGYE ceremonies. Coming from old family collection of tribal artifacts. Item Description Tribe: SONGYE Country: South-east of D.R.Congo(former Zaire) During the 16th century. The Songye migrated from the Shaba area, which is now the southern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their history is closely linked to the Luba's, to whom the Songye are related through common ancestors. Being in war against one another for a long time, the Songye and Luba later formed an alliance to fight the Arabs. They settled on the left bank of the Lualaba River, on a savanna and forest-covered plateau. The SONGYE ... moreare not known for being gentle. Quite contrary, they have a well deserved reputation for being tough-that is probably related to their attention to magic resulting in far numerous fetishes than ancestral statues. The tribal society is patriarchal, mainly agricultural and is divided in different groups, all of which obey one chief“Yakitenge” and observe strict rules: no grief showing. No drinking in public and no handshaking with men. Fetish figures serve different purposes: protection of whole villages. Protection of individuals against death or disease and many, many others.
