Bamana Bambara Chi Wara Chiwara Ci Wara Tyi Wara Mali- no reserve
The Bambara of Mali are notable highly successful farmers. As they were when the first slave ships traveled the Atlantic from the sources of the Senegal and Gambia rivers to the Gulf Coast of Louisiana at the Mississippi Sound onto Ile Dauphine and on through Lake Borgne and Lake Pontchartrain to Bayou St. Jean or to the Balise and up Mississippi River, to New Orleans in the early years of the 18th century. The Bambara attributed their success to the lessons learned from a half-human. Half-animal deity called chi wara. working wild animal. Chi wara(or tsi wara) With his hooves and his mother's pointed stick, tilled the soil and turned wild grasses into grain. But because the people wasted the grain, chi wara returned to the earth. The farmers then created art and dance to recall him and his powers over nature. These headdresses feature ... morethe antelope. Giving visual form to important religious beliefs about fertility and growth. They were worn in dances at the beginning of the rainy season(or when a fallow field was re-seeded) to assure a good harvest. Dancers who wore these headdresses covered their bodies with long grasses and cloth. They went bent over using two canes, believing that if they stood upright, they would offend the deity. The dancers accompanied farmers to the fields, supervised the planting, and then returned to the village where they danced. The dance consisted of jumps, sudden leaps and turns reminiscent of the actions of the antelope. Three different styles of chi wara headdresses have been associated with distinct geographic areas within Mali. The first is a vertical style in which the body and legs of the male antelope are small. But the mane, nuzzle and horns are elongated and elaborated. Its open work mane with a zigzag pattern is said to represent the course of the sun across the sky during the agricultural year. The female antelope in contrast is depicted simply as carrying a young on its back. This vertical style is typically found in the eastern parts of Mali(Segou region) The s

Represent and honor the mythological half man/ half antelope hero who taught man how to cultivate the soil. They were danced in pairs and celebrate the union of male(sun) female(earth) and fibre costume(rain) signifying the cooperation needed for a successful harvest and community survival. They are worn as headdresses and danced as pairs. There are three types of Chi Wara headdresses; the familiar vertical style of the eastern Bamana, the more realistic horizontal style of the northern Bamana and the varied and more abstract forms of the Southern Bamana. When crops are hoed, dancers wearing antelope headdresses leap& bound over the fields ... moreaccompanied by drummers, in order to obtain an abundant harvest. The larger mask represents a buck, the smaller, a female with her baby. The horn is a symbol of the millet's growth. The pair of dancers wear a long raffia cloak, a different color, frequently covering the face, and lean on staves; the Chi wara is secured to an inverted basket and tied to the head, imitates the high, impulsive leaps of the frisking antelopes-imitating the working or farming(chi) wild animal(wara) who taught mankind how to cultivate the earth. During the performance, each mask has a special female partner who dances behind the masquerader, fanning the air to disseminate the spirit's aura. Not only is the Chi wara a fertility ritual to invoke fertile crops, but may also appear in agricultural matches or contests between neighboring villages. Drumming, singing, dancing, costumes and headresses combine to send a message about the importance of agriculture, the virtues it demands of farmers, and the relation of the Bamana to the cosmos. The dances are now performed largely in the secular sense, singing the praises of the Chi wara. RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Feog4d72f%2Bf7%6

Also called Bamana, form the largest ethnic group within Mali and occupy the central part of the country, in an area of savannah. They live principally from agriculture, with some subsidiary cattle rearing in the northern part of their territory. The Bambara people are predominantly animists, although recently the Muslim faith has been spreading among them. The Bambara kingdom was founded in the 17th century and reached its pinnacle between 176o, and 1787 during the reign of N'golo Diarra. N'golo Diarra is credited with conquering the Peul people and in turn claimed the cities of Dienne and Timbuktu. However, during the 19th century, the kingdom began to decline and ultimately fell to the French when they arrived in 1892. For the most part, Bambara society is structured around six male societies, known as the Dyow(sing. Dyo) The stylistic variations in Bambara art are extreme sculptures, masks and headdresses display either stylized or realistic features, and either weathered or encrusted patinas. Until quite r

A BEAUTIFUL BAMANA CHI WARA HEADDRESS- EX. B ORIS MIRSKI GALLE RY(1898-1974) Country: Mali Description: A rare and masterfully carved early example with attached basketry headdress. Animal fur and exhibiting a beautiful patina. A museum worthy piece from an important early American collector and dealer. The Bamana are traditionally an agricultural people who reside primarily in the country of Mali and the northern part of Côte D’Ivoire. The Bamana have developed six social societies that are responsible for continuing traditional education. Initiation and rites of passage, social roles, spiritual protection, and the proper practice of agriculture within their communities. Among the best-known of these societies is the agricultural society known as the Chi Wara association. The words“Chi Wara” translate to“work” and“wild animal. According ... moreto Bamana legend. The Chi Wara are primordial creatures that were half-human and half-antelope, who showed humans how to cultivate the earth; the creature used its hooves to dig into the earth like a hoe, to soften the ground and to create furrows for planting. The Bamana followed the Chi Wara’s instructions and grew crops, but their crops were so bountiful that they became wasteful and squandered their bounty. The Chi Wara became disappointed with humans and buried themselves in the earth. The Chi Wara association is therefore closely related to agricultural fertility. In creating this society. The Bamana realized their mistakes and pledged to change their ways. They also began making Chi Wara headdresses and holding masquerades to honor the mythical Chi Wara ancestors and to encourage cooperation among all members of the community to ensure a successful harvest. In the performances, a pair of Chi Wara masqueraders—male and female—wear the antelope headdresses and raffia costumes, and they dance the headdresses by leaping in the air and pretending to use ho

Holes drilled through the base would have been where cords would have tied this horizontal head crest to a basketry cap to be worn by the dancer. Among the Bamana of Mali yearly agricultural rites in celebration of Chi-Wara are held to celebrate the idea of fertility necessary for successful farming and for the people of the village. This ceremony is the time for the appearance of Chi-Wara. Representing the large roan antelope seen in the fields of the region. When the sculpted head-crests are danced they appear in male and female pairs that generally represent the spirit of fertility of the fields and the people. Chi-Wara head-crests always appear in male-female pairs emphasizing the idea of fertility and the fact that the female will bear the young male to start the cycle again. On its back there are two vertical horns. And a standing figure. The overall condition is very good. It is missing the basketry cap, and the beaded rings that would have served to decorate the pangolin ears as seen on some examples of this type of Chi-wara. Chi wara or Tji Waras are"danced" twice a year. During planting ceremonies, and after the harvest to honor the best farmer in the village. Sometimes the figure is above another animal, not always clearly definable as to species. The antelope represents the mythical character who taught the Bambara how to cultivate the land. The horn is a symbol of the millet's growth.
