Damage/Repair, stain. Shallow cracks, chips, worn patina, Certificate of Authenticity Available! Additional Information: This extraordinary carved mask with a transverse crest ... morewith brightly painted rays and the dramatic rounded eyes and square mouth mask is interesting in that it sets a problem of identification. Masks with these markings have been attributed in the past to the Tetela or Sungu people. A Tetela sub-group, neighbors to the Songye. However recent scholarship attributes such masks to the Songye people and denies the existence of masks among the Tetela. See De Husch, L. ‘Beauty is elsewhere: Returning a verdict on Tetela masks.’ In Objects: Signs of Africa. 1995. pp. 175-194. It is probable that such a mask was inspired by the Songye masks The miter-like form on the top. As well as the squared mouth recall some Songye mask from a localized identification to a Songye Tempa sub-group. If really Tetela-Sungu this should be considered as new forms of art among these peoples demonstrating a strong Songye influence. This mask reflects some of this crossing of stylistic boundaries possibly showing Songye style and other influences. If truly Songye, this mask would indeed be a variant or late style of this particular type of Songye mask. This is a late example of its kind that was probably used during the initiation and circumcisio

Although the mask is in overall good condition. One piece of the wood that holds the string to the right hand side of the mask has broken and will need to be glued or repaired to hang on the wall. Please refer to picture# 6 to see what im referring to. The consignor of this item and her late husband visited Africa in the 1970's and obtained some nice artifacts; these are from their estate. Please see pictures for further detail. The Songye people live in the Democratic Republic of the Congo(DRC. Formerly Zaire) Numbering some 150,000 people, Songye society is patrilineal, and governed by a highly revered male chief. They share common ancestors ... moreand oral traditions with the Luba people of the DRC, and subsist by farming or hunting. Because rivers are believed to be the repository of the souls of revered ancestors, Songye people are extremely reluctant to fish. The warlike history of the Songye influences the confrontational nature of their art. Songye shields. Once a vital part of the the warrior's gear, are still hand-carved of wood, and often include the intimidating face and violently zig-zagging grooves that would once have frightened the enemy in battle. These grooved patterns are typical of Songye pieces, and may represent the scarifications that Songye warriors cut into their faces. They are among the most belligerent of all African masks. The presence of a central crest on a Songye mask identifies that mask as male. The female kifewebe has no crest but plain coiffure on its head. The size of the crest on male masks determines the magic power contained in the mask. Masquerades supplement these masks with woven costumes and long raffia beards. Songye masks are easily identified by their striations and their shapes. The eyes. Noses and mouths are carved in. Often. The lips form star-shaped puckers to give t

BASONGYE, BASSONGO, BAYEMBE, SONGE, SONGHAY, WASONGA) There are numerous mask styles associated with the Songye. Power objects and objects associated with divination are also prevalent in Western collections. In the past many Songye objects have been misattributed to the Luba and vice versa. Songye origins are shared with the Luba through a common mythical Songye ancestor known as Kongolo. Who can be traced through lineages to the 16th century. The ... morelinguistic traditions of these neighboring peoples are intertwined as well. It is believed that the founders of the Songye emerged from the lake region in Shaba province to the south in the heart of the Luba homeland. The Lomani River divides Songye territory and marks the boundary of the areas invaded by the Luba. As a result of these geographic and political differences there emerged of two distinct social structures among the eastern and western Songye and two stylistic differences in art forms between the two areas. The Songye traditionally relied mostly on farming and hunting for subsistence. Because the rivers were associated with the spirits of deceased chiefs who were often buried in them. Fishing was not practiced except in times of great need. The artistic wares of the Songye, including pottery made by women and weaving and metalworking done by men, were traded extensively with their neighbors. They were recognized as superior craftsmen, and their products were in great demand. The Songye are divided into about 35 subgroups. The paramount chief(Yakitenge) and his advisers are the central power in Songye territory. Many of the subgroups were actually quite large. Were o

Fine Antique Songye Kifwebe Mask Congo / DRC
This is a beautiful– and very fine antique Songye mask from the Kifwebe society. The Songye is a tribe from the central part of DRC(Kasai and Maniema) Although medium in size. SONGYE MALE KIFWEBE MASK - DROC
Songye Male Kifwebe Mask- DROC The Songye are from the Democratic Republic of the Congo(Zaire) and live along the Lualaba River. They are a patriarchal society. The Kifwebe masks were made for the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe association. A type of policing society that provides a means of controlling social behavior and neutralizing disruptive elements within the group. These masks appeared at the installation and death of a chief, and at the initiation rites of young men as well as a whole range of occasions that included punishments, warfare and public works. It has a sagittal ridge across the top of the mask that runs to the nose and the rarer female mask does ... morenot. This mask are worn with a grass or reed woven skirt that appears like a long beard. The dancer’s legs are wrapped in woven grass leggings. These masks have geometrical striating channels carved into them that represent designs and patterns seen in dangerous or feared animals. Particular designs in the individual mask can also show which Songye group it came from. This fine example measures 14.5 inches tall and 8 inches wide.

The Songye migrated from the Shaba area, which is now the southern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their history is closely linked to the Luba's, to whom the Songye are related through common ancestors. Having waged war against one another for a long time, the Songye and Luba later formed an alliance to fight the Arabs. Songye origins are shared with the Luba through a common mythical Songye ancestor known as Kongolo, who can be traced through lineages to the 16th century. The linguistic traditions of these neighboring peoples are intertwined as well. It is believed that the founders of the Songye emerged from the lake region in Shaba province to the south in the heart of the Luba homeland. Highly stylized masks called the Kifwebe are famous Songye tribal art. These masks have grooved pattern on the face and is a common characteristic. The white paint in the grooves symbolizes peace, light and the purity of the soul. Some mask adorned with brown, tan and blue symbolizes nature as positive force. A beautiful wood and pigment mask from the Songye tribe of The Democratic Republic of the Congo. It appears to be a female mask since the center ridge is not pronounced. Please refer to the last photo regarding the split and to the photos in general for overall condition. The mask is approximately 14" tall. Approximately 6 1/2" wide and approximately 6 1/2" deep. Masks with these markings have been attributed in the past to the Luluwa. Tetela, sungu or other Sankuru peoples, neighbors to the Songye. However recent scholarship indicates most of the masks from this region do come from the Songye. A close similar mask from The Trustees of the British Museum. London and published in AFRICA. THE ART OF A CONTINENT p. 281 is attributed to the Songye. Our mask could well be a work from a Songye sub-group. This mask reflects some of this crossing of stylistic boundaries possibly showing Songye style and other influences. This mask may indeed be a variant style of Kifwebe type of Songye masks. Notwithstanding its origin this is a strongly carved mask with obvious signs of long use and good age. The Songye live in an area of savanna crossed by numerous major river systems. They have a long history of migration and cultural interchange especially with the Luba from whom they are said to have originated. They share sculptural styles with other prominent neighboring peoples including the Luba
Older SONGYE Male Kifwebe Mask - Low Opening Bid! CONGO
Male Songye Kifwebe Mask 18" x 10" x 7" Very mysterious vibe. Seems to have some age. Native repairs to face. Shows signs of actual tribal use From my personal collection. Acquired from a longtime collector. Additional Information: This mask belongs to the most famous of the Songye masks. Made for the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe Secret society. Kifwebe" means"Mask" in the Songye language. The face generally is covered with linear incisions which are sometimes pigmented, the mouth is most often square and protruding. If it has a central crest, it is masculine; if not, feminine. The size of the crest determines the magical power of the mask. During initiation, circumcision, or funeral ceremonies. For examples, and more information, see Bacquart's TRIBAL ARTS OF AFRICA and Cornet's A SURVEY OF ZAIRIAN ART-THE BRONSON ... moreCOLLECTION. According to Hersak(1985: 168) The striated masks, or kifwebe, are used as agents of a tradition and figures of authority to exercise social and political control through practices of evil magic and witchcraft by the members of the bwadi bwa kifwebe society. Among the societies' public performances, three mask types exist: two grades of male and one female mask. Male masks are distinguished by a striated pattern of three colors while the female one is predominantly white with the features accented in black and some red. The Kifwebe tradition which exists also among the Luba, seems to have originated south of the eastern chiefdom in an area of Luba/Songe admixture. The Songe confirm this provenance by the interpretation that the kifwebe striations relate(apart from the zebra) to a pugnacious species of striped bushbuck antelope which inhabited the area. Fascinating, Exciting African Tribal Mask SONGYE KIFWEBE Female Mask African Art
Kifwebe Mask from the Songye of the Congo Here. In my humble opinion, is a rare example of true"ethnographic art. I admit to being a"kifwebe addict. with a deep love for the art form, and so I'm selling some of my pieces to make way for more. Here's what excited me about this mask. Here's an excerpt from the amazing book. An African World: The Basongye Village of Lupupa Ngye. Published in 1974 by Alan P. Merriam(p. 144) The masks were made by specialists; once completed. The mulawe mixture(unknown contents) was made and. In the presence of the society members, rubbed on the mask. It is this magic which'activates' the mask. And the wearer enters into a special state: when you wear the kifwebe, you become something else. This state is known as bwadi. And the person who enters it by donning the mask is no longer ... morehuman, nor is he a spirit; he becomes kifwebe. I have no idea what's made the patination on this mask. But to me it looks like the mask has been used in some tribal context. FUN COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS Note the(final) picture from the seminal work. Beauty and the Beasts by Marc Leo Felix. Showing a mask from the Stewart J. Warkow collection. Final picture. Note the similarity of the crest. Eyes(horizontal stripe) nose and mouth. The size of the mask in the Beauty and the Beasts is 14 inches(36 cm) This mask is also 14 inches. To me that's also exciting. OTHER NOTES Note the unevenness of the holes. Masks made in the traditional method employ an iron adze. And are less concerned about how even the spacing between holes is. Masks are not created to be"art" as we think of it, to be hung on a wall; they serve a practical function. In the case of the Songye, most functions are magical; as part of the Bwadi Bwa(or Bwadi Ka) society, from protecting the village from lightning to helping crops grow, welcoming visitors, policing(in some cases) all generally with the thought of pleasing(or at least avoiding any ill effects from) their god Efile Mukulu. Antique African Mask Songye Kifewebe Male
Antique African Songye Kifewebe Mask Male SONGYE: Ceremonial Mask Zaire During the 16th century. Highly stylized masks called the Kifwebe ... moreare famous Songye tribal art. These masks have grooved pattern on the face and is a common characteristic. The white paint in the grooves symbolizes peace, light and the purity of the soul. Some mask adorned with brown, tan and blue symbolizes nature as positive force. The facial elements are associated with animals. Some mask appears to have the Black white stripes of a zebra. The nose in most instances seems to appear triangular and the mouth is always protruding and geometrically shaped- rectangular, square, half circle. The Songye tribe uses this type of masks during ceremonies, and at the funeral processions of important leaders. According to the Songye tribe, when certain individuals of the Kifwebe society wear the mask along with the costume and raffia beard they are believed to gain magical powers that can manipulate evil spirits. This is an amazing work of art! The tall crest protruding from the forehead area means that this is a male mask. The female masks have smaller crests or none at all. It has a real history of tribal use and would make a great addition to your collection! It's in amazing condition and you can see and smell the age of this piece! I have m

The nose in most instances seems to appear triangular and the mouth is always protruding and geometrically shaped. rectangular, square, half circle etc) For more examples, see Bacquart's TRIBAL ARTS OF AFRICA and Cornet's A SURVEY OF ZAIRIAN ART-THE BRONSON COLLECTION. The striated masks are used as agents of a tradition and figures of authority to exercise social and political control through practices of evil magic and witchcraft by the members of the bwadi bwa kifwebe society. BEAUTIFUL African SONGYE SHIELD Done extremely well with Character! non mask
You are bidding on a very nice and rare African SONGYE SHIELD with a face on it. I haven't ran across many of these and this one is cool with lots of character. We have been collecting masks and items for many years. And have purchased most of them from two different people. One has a well known gallery and sells on ebay, the other one is a couple who went to Africa every year and brought thousands of dollars in African Art home with them and gave us first option at them in most cases. You will see with the different masks we list that they really stand out and not ordinary masks. Beautiful pieces that will look nice in your home. We did not plan on having to downsize and sell most our art, so we DON'T have much INFO if any on these. I will list them as where I BELIEVE they came from but IT IS ONLY MY OPINION. Again, they are very ... morenice pieces. This one we believe came from D R Congo. Please bid on them for the beauty in the art and how well it is carved! Fine African Art Congo Hemba Tribal Mask Masque dogon yoruba songye senofu lobi
Old and fine wood African Hemba mask. Carved in very hard and heavy wood, good volume) and with a very nice encrusted sacrificial patina. Mid 20th Century. I love the presence and the"evocation" of this piece. A wooden face mask with a pointed forehead. Eyebrows in relief, circular ears, open eyes, a chimpanzee-like nose, an arched narrow opening in place of mouth. These traits identify this mask t the Chimpanzee. And monkey masks like this are a common theme among the Hemba people who live west of Lake Tanganyika and east of the River Zaire. Their sculpture has often been mistakenly identified to the Luba who are their larger neighbors. This monkey faced mask is worn not on the face but at the waist at the belt line. It is known among the Hemba simply as(Mwisi Gwa So'o, ibombo ya soho" or"Soko Muntu" which means'monkey ... moremask" The masks Ibombo ya soho represent the idea of death when they are danced at funerals. The exaggerated features of the Soho mask represents a creature of the bush that is half human and half monkey. It is a being that can be either dangerous or helpful. The personification of this being depicts the potential of nature and the need to control its excesses through the dancing of the men’s society Ibombo ya Soho masks. These masks are not very large and upon occasions are worn at dancer’s waists or kept in the house to protect the household from malevolent forces. The Hemba monkey mask reflects the ability of the African artist to characterize the idea of life and death in brooding sculptural form. As well as the dancer’s ability to impart the lessons of living within a rationally structured society. Height: 33 cm. 13 in. Stand not included Read Before Bidding I am not a shop dealer. Kifwebe" means"Mask" in the Songye language. The faces recall the Kifwebe masks with linear incisions pigmented, the mouth in the form of a 8 and the central crests. Sculpture like this are known as Nkishi and often served to divine the future. Control one's destiny, and forestall evil-doers or to work magic and most importantly ... moreto gain the attention of the spirit world. Among the Songye, such figures generally served a common purpose as ‘objects of power’. When represented by two bodies or heads, these carvigs are supposed to embody more power than single ones. NKishi(sing. or Makishi(plural) have different magical substances that the owner, the ritual and magical ‘specialist’, Nganga considers important to give the figure power to act and the magical substances that load a figure with power are called bishimba. Nkishi also serves as the contact point between the spirits and the Nganga, it is where the ritual activity of the diviner meets spiritual presence. The age of the object can be seen in the wear of the surface through long use and the accumulation of magical elements. This sculpture would stand well in a serious collection. The Songye people live on the left bank of the Lualaba River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Songye style is identified here by the strong body. The jutting square chin and geometric nose with the eyes and brows artistically prominent. Symbolical elements such as the horn encrusted in the middle of both heads and the white pigment on each

It is quite an old piece of art and has considerable insect deterioration but takes nothing away from the stunning style and presence of this big fella. The Songye made power figures. Nkishi/ Nkisi(singular) and Mankishi(plural) to combat witchcraft and sorcery. They were benign and were believed to bring good, promote fertility and success, vanquish enemies and protect from evil. Large ones were owned by and served the community; small ones were for individual families. Adorned with additional objects, Bajimba, with magical properties(horns, ... moreskins, teeth, hair, feathers, beads, tacks, cloth, etc. they gained their power not from the carver but from the Nganga, or spiritual leader. They settled on the left bank of the Lualaba River, on a savanna and forest-covered plateau. Divided into many subgroups, the 150,000 Songye people are governed by a central chief assisted by innumerable secret societies. Damage/Repair, cracks in crest and in one side of the mask chips and shallow cracks in places. Stains, Additional Information: ... moredditional Information: This extraordinary carved mask with a transverse crest with brightly painted rays and the dramatic rounded eyes and square mouth mask is interesting in that it sets a problem of identification. 1995. pp. 175-194. Notwithstanding its origin this is a strongly carved mask with obvious signs of long use and some patination on the inside gained through time. This mask reflects some of this crossing of stylistic boundaries possibly showing Songye style
