The darker ones were used in funeral processions, and are highly-prized by collectors for their stark beauty. Known as"lo" masks, their purpose was to appease supernatural powers known as"yu. The"yu, though vital for life, could also destroy, so veneration was important to ease the understandable social and spiritual tension present after the death of an elder. Masks could not be seen by women, and were treated with caution even by the men who danced them. Though masks are not normally used by the greater number of Akan peoples including the Asante or Fante, they are often found attached to various chiefly regalia prominent on sword sheaths or chiefly stools. They represent human and animal heads and are sometimes used as trophies. It is difficult to determine the age of this fine mask however the delicacy of the treatment of the facial details show that this was the product of a skilled craftsman and a long tradition of casting in West Africa. Baule Mask Miniature Cote d'Ivoire African
Title, Baule Mask Miniature Cote d'Ivoire African, Type of Object, Mask. Miniature Mask, Country of Origin, Cote d'Ivoire, People, Baule, Materials, Wood. Pigment, Approximate Age, 20th Century, Dimensions, 7.75 inches, Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, General wear. Chips, Additional Information: Miniature masks often called"passport" masks are found among the various peoples of Liberia and Ivory Coast. Including the Dan, Yacouba, Gio, Wenion(We, Guere) Geh, Loma, Konor, and Bete. They are rarely seen among the Baule people. This miniature is exceptionally well-carved and big in size compare to many passport masks. Small masks like this are use as personal mask of initiated adult men and would be carried everywhere When traveling, initiates would take passport masks with them in leather pouches. The masks would serve ... moreas protective spirits. Passport masks serve also to mark the passage of an initiate into the men's secret society and his elevation into the higher ranks. They may be presented at meetings of senior members of the men's society to indicate their right to be present and participate in the deliberations. Diviner would recommend that small masks be given to children to wear to ward off evil witches or cure illnesses. Passport masks were kept on personal shrines when not in use. On shrines they would receive the offerings and prayers of their owners and in time would accumulate a rich patina of different substances that could obscure their features. Most of these miniature masks mirror the shape and features of the larger masks that they were modeled after. Like the full-sized dance masks the smaller masks reflect the great diversity of styles and forms of the larger masks. This one is in the shape of an anthropomorphic portrait mask with high elaborate coiffure that indicates the mask represents a female character. Lot 75, Old / Collectable Baule Male Kplekple Goli Mask w/Horns / Ivory Coast
Common features of the Kplekple disc shaped facemasks include antelope shaped horns. Round eyes, rectangular shaped mouth and the geometric designs. The red face is considered female and the dark/ black face is considered male. The Goli masquerading tradition is performed during funerals and or during times of danger. The mask wearer mediates with supernatural forces during the ritual. Which have a positive influence on the village people. The Kplekple is considered the lowest of Goli masquerades and these rituals appears 3 times during the day. Dawn. Afternoon and after sunset. The dance announcers the arrival of Goli Glin a zoomorphic figure or of kpwan, an anthropomorphic one. The Baule tribe adopted this ritual from the neighboring Wan tribe. Even the language of the Wan is still use during the ritual. The young mask wearers are often ... moredraped in goatskin that covers their back along with a raffia skirt. Baule Brass Crocodile Mask-Superb Ivory Coast African
Title, Baule Brass Crocodile Mask-Superb Ivory Coast African, Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, Ivory Coast, People, Baule, Materials, Brass/Copper alloy, Approximate Age, Unknown, Dimensions, Height is 10.5 inches, Overall Condition, Good:   Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners. Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, Some oxidation. Holes head, chips in eyes and in the back, hole in lower jaw Additional Information: A beautifully cast! This piece was cast using the ... morelost wax process. Unbelievably time intensive, and makes one-of-a-kind pieces. A casting mask in the form of a crocodile head with an open mouth showing pointed teeth, and open eyes. There are fine motifs around the eyes and the top. This lost wax cast of a copper alloy mask(bronze or brass) comes from the Baule people of the Ivory Coast in west Africa. The Baule people use three types of masks: The first is a helmet mask in the shape of a buffalo head, Bonu Amwin; the second represents a human face with rounded, fairly realistic features; and the third type includes masks related to the Goli festival. Three type of masks are used during these festivals: the first is of discoid shape and represents a highly stylized face beneath a pair of horns; the second is a helmet mask representing a buffalo head beneath antelope horns; and the third is used for closing the festivities, and has
