Tuscon, AZ, 2008 Catalog No. 1978.002.006 or 1978.008.006 found on base(7th numeral illegible) Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes. The arts of the Yoruba are as numerous as their deities. And many objects are placed on shrines to honor the gods and the ancestors. The present example is an exceptional mid 20th century work that was field collected in Benin(the Yoruba live in both South West Nigeria, Benin, Togo and other coast areas) Some of the most elaborate court art in Africa comes from the country of Benin(once called Dahomey) home of the Fon kingdom, and from western Nigeria, home of the Yoruba and Edo kingdoms. Benin City, in Nigeria, is the capital of the Edo-speaking people. The art of the Fon kingdom incorporates animal imagery, symbolically associated with royalty and with proverbs that reinforce moral laws and the power of rulers. Since the seventeenth century, Yoruba-speaking peoples have been organized in a series of kingdoms. Much Yoruba art is made in association with deities known as orisha, each associated with particular iconography. The subject sculpture displays native repairs to the base, back, and sides of face. Good condition with natural wear, age cracks(all stable) erosion on the crest, and significant wood compaction on the underside of the base. Scarifications along the face and body. Appropriate of age, origin and medium. Please note this remarkable Yoruba figure was acquired by Robert Kirincich from Dr. Neil Justin. Ph.D. in 2008. Dr. Justin is a retired anthropologist and film maker whom has led over 23 safaris throughout Africa. Kirincich met Dr. Justin through the anthropology department at the University of Arizona and noted his collection included superior objects and early w

Damage/Repair, old chips on base and nipples. And scrapes in places, Additional Information: The Yoruba of Nigeria and of the Benin Republic are known for having an extraordinarily high rate of multiple births. The rate of twin births is one of the highest in the world. 45 of every 1,000 births(in the United States it is 28.9 of every 1000) There is also a high mortality rate; half of the twins die shortly after birth. In earlier times. New-born twins, or ibeji, as they are called, were believed to be evil, monstrous abnormalities and infanticide was a common practice. However, such beliefs and practices were later superseded and reversed, and by the middle of the 18th century twins came to be seen as a blessing; they were awarded the status of minor deities, called Orishas, and their arrival was viewed as an omen of good fortune for the family. By the 19th century the cult of the Ere Ibeji was firmly established and continues to this day. The death of one or both twins is regarded as a great calamity for the family, one which requires immediate appeasement of the soul of the deceased child. Though the cause of the high rate of twin births among Yoruba women has not been established. The cultural grieving process is well documented and may be observed in the carving of a figure known as Ere Ibeji, which both represents the lost child and serves as a rit

This is an original. Vintage, beaded& hand-crafted diviners belt, created in Nigeria-Western Africa(Yoruba People Tribe) The piece is 53" tall ... moreby 7" in width. The clever design and imagery on the belt features four men and women-dancing and one on a sort of swing. The diviners belt is also known as the King's Belt with each beaded color signifying a different god. The fact that this piece is almost entirely beaded suggests it is of the most important quality! The religious practices and ceremonies of Shango became the basis of Santeria when mixed with Western European religious influences, especially Catholicism, and transplanted to the New World. If anyone has any additional information about tribe/country on this, I'd love to hear what you know. Informational notes on this was very limited. This item is from a small private collection of primarily African tribal collectibles/art(also includes a few North West/Canadian/Eskimo/Asian pieces/US Art Work-paintings and lithographs) Most of the African material was collected in the 1970s and represents varies tribes from the Cameroon. Zimbabwe, Ghana, Burkino Faso and others.

Miniature, Country of Origin, Nigeria, People, Yoruba, Materials, Wood. ... morePigment, beads, aluminum, Approximate Age, Mid 20th century, Dimensions, 11 inches H. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, Worn patina, Additional Information: The helmet and skirt suggest that this is a colonial era piece. Among the Yoruba. Who have the highest rate of twins in the world, the arrival of twins is seen as both a blessing and an omen because of the high mortality rate. If a twin dies, an image dedicated to Ibeji, the deity of twins, is carved to serve as the earthly abode for the spirit of the deceased. AFRICAN DOLLS FOR PLAY AND MAGIC, by Dagan. Among the Yoruba, twins have special powers, much like the orisha. and are to be treated with respect throughout their lives. If a twin dies, the mother seeks a diviner's advice about which carver should make the ere ibeji to stand in for the dead child. Once the figure is carved, the artist activates it by soaking it in a special solution and rubbing it with specific oils. The mother treats the ere ibeji as if it were alive, feeding, dressing, and bathing the image. Its face is washed with soap or sugarcane fiber, then rubbed with a cloth and indigo or laundry bluing. After a period of time, the facial features may be rubbed away. Janus Shango Shrine Figure, Yoruba, Nigeria / Santeria
Shango known as a powerful warrior and the fourth legendary king of the Oyo kingdom. Shango was renowned for his fiery temper, which was often compared to the thunderous roar and flashing lightning of a storm. The many myths surrounding Shango emphasize his impulsive use of power and his ability to destroy. One myth mentions that Shango’s chiefs ended his tyrannical rule by dethroning him and expelling him from the capital. After Shango hangs himself, his friends learn charm-making and acquire the power to attract lightning to take vengeance on the houses of their(and the former king’s) enemies. A second story recounts how Shango, fascinated with magical powers, inadvertently kills several of his wives and children with a thunderstorm he conjured up. His sorrow leads him to abdicate the throne and hang himself; his enemies scorn his name. ... moreWhen thunderstorms destroy much of the capital, Shango’s followers say it is the former king himself punishing the slanderers. The right to wear crowns is limited to approximately fifty Yoruba kings. Theoretically. ORISHA blessed mankind with the use of beads, and their use is restricted to those whose spiritual powers enable them to move across the boundary that separates men from gods, the ... moresecular from the sacred. The crown itself is worshiped. It is placed upon the king's head from behind, usually by the senior wife, because he may not look upon the bird which goes on the top, which holds powerful medicines to protect him and his destiny. The veil is to keep viewers from seeing the king's face, masking his individuality, and also focusing attention on the real focus of power, the crown. The birds on the side symbolize the fact that the king rules"only with the support of the mothers. Crowns limited to those who could trace their heritage to Odudua, first king of Yoruba(at Ife) Crowns are called orisha(deity) and is the object of care and veneration by a woman at court. The veil focuses the viewer's attention to the crown and to venerate the king's head. Orisha is the generic name for a deity and not a king. It was either of the orishas Olokun(god of the sea) or Obalufon that gave humans the gift of beads. In the past, the use of prestige beadworks such as this was limited to kings, priests and priestesses and certain diviners. Birds represent women, and signify that the King cannot rule without the support of women. Recommended Reading: See F

Yoruba Beaded Maternity Group figure - Cosmetic Container African
Beads were signs of wealth and status for the Yoruba people in Nigeria. Many Yoruba sacred and secular objects were embellished with elaborate images and symbolic designs created by small glass beads. Exhibiting a wide diversity in size. Symbolism, intimacy and style, African maternity figures depict the ideals of beauty, fertility, character and action and many signify much more, whether the primordial mother or a legendary founding ancestor. Commonly used as shrine figures, they were often objects of petitions or prayers for fertility and successful births. The prevelance of the maternity theme testifies to the importance of women and children to the continuity of each people. Offered today is a beaded Yoruba maternity group. I was told that this particular maternity figure was most likely a cosmetic holder. As you can see. The lid of the ... morecentral container comes off. Strand Length, 22 inches, Additional information: Africa has been home to an active metalworking industry for 6.000 years, reaching back to the ancient Nubians and Egyptians who crafted artifacts in gold and copper. Ironworking was introduced by the Phoenicians around 800 BCE, and spread gradually across the continent: south into the Sudan and the Kingdom of Axum, then west ... moreto the Nok civilization and along the Atlantic coast. The metal was used to produce weapons, tools, amulets and other magical objects, and blacksmiths came to occupy a special position in society: respected and feared for their powers of metamorphosis. To this day, many West Africans will not look a blacksmith directly in the eye. Iron was not the only metal manipulated and shaped by the skilled hands of African metalworkers. The Ashanti kingdom in present-day Ghana was famous for its abundant gold reserves. And the Ashanti people crowned their king on a sacred golden stool said to have floated down from the heavens. The nomadic Tuareg traversing the Sahara region specialized in silver jewelry like the Agadez cross pendants which were passed down from father to son with the words, “I give you the four corners of the world, because one cannot know where one will die.” In Ethiopia, triangular or crescent-shaped telsum amulets, mergaf pendants with their dangling conical bells, Coptic crosses, and strands of hollow prayer beads were all crafted in silver. A spectacular range of brass beads and pendants were(and continue to be) produced across the continent. Most no

Chelsea Cooksey, YORUBA: AN ART OF LIFE. The Bennett-Luther Collection Africa Direct, Denver, Colorado, 2004, fig.22, p. 36. Additional Information: Drums provide important rhythmical background for ceremonies for Shango. The Yoruba god of thunder. Animal hide is tightly wrapped over the top and bottom of the tapered hollow wood cylinder, and held in place with strips of hide. Each drum produces a different tone. It is noteworthy that this accords with the tonal language of the Yoruba, in which a word may have different meanings based upon the tone or pitch used as the word is spoken. Through changes in rhythm, pitch and tone, the drums literally sing the praises of Shango and demarcate different phases in the rituals. Through extraordinary skill and musicianship master drummers can make the drums speak as they both inform and entertain the devotees of Shango. Daniel Mato, PhD. African tribal YORUBA brass currency bracelet, ethnographic art, jewelry, decor
Cerre Perdue(last wax) casting was a later development than to open mold of sand casting. Many of lost wax showed Persian or Coptic influence. By the 19th century bracelets were used to purchase food and palm wine. To compensate diviners, to satisfy court claims, to contract for a wife and to be buried with. The form, weight, and composition of bracelet money clearly mattered to participants in any transaction. The sheer value verifies their wide spread use. A long-long lived monetary function of bracelets was their use for wealth storage and display. The early Benin use of bracelets. The simpler ... morebut more laborious process of drawing wire was used in Central Africa. This technique was refined in particular by the Kamba. Chagga, and Kekuyu of Kenya, the Longo, the Hutu of Barundi, the Bemba, the Nyamwezi, and Yeke, the Lembe, and Tremovaaland the Zulu. Casting was probably the primary method used in west Africa through Sudan. This Hausa bracelet measures 4" wide. One of many fine examples of the art of bracelet making in Africa!

Lot 777, Old / Collectable Gelede /Yoruba / Nigeria / Santeria / Yemaya / Ifa
Gelede. The masquerade performances of ancestral spirits, provides an outlet in which men play a major role. This celebration is associated with a deified founding foremother, either earth or water along with a forefather. The Gelede honors and serves spiritually powerful women-elders, ancestors, and deities. A woman's status derives largely from her reputation in trading, her craftsmanship, and her wealth, rather than her husband's importance. Since the principal occupation of Yoruba women is trading, many Gelede masks depict marketwomen. These women are economically independent of their husbands and have the potential to earn even more money than the husband. Borrowing occurs, but with expectation that it will be paid back. Ideals such as patience and control and reverence are personified as women. The same women that are made tribute ... moreto. The mothers, who are united with all women by'the flow of blood, embody the concept of balance, a female quality that man must understand-indeed emulate- in order to survive" An elderly woman, her long years implying a secret knowledge and power may be regarded as a"witch" These elderly women and priestesses tend to be shown much affection. It is because of this special power that they have greater access to Yoruba deities. Any elderly woman, her longevity suggesting a mystical power and a secretive knowledge, is put into the same category as all those who hold important titles in cults for the gods and ancestors. Old age implies spiritual prowess taken from the end of menstruation. Thus menopause plays a role in the community that, unlike in the Western civilization, is very revered. The doll with the pointy hairstyle stands about 11 inches tall, and the one with the more rounded hairstyle is about 10 inches tall. Don't miss this opportunity to own these awesome Yoruba twin dolls! They would be a great addition to your collection. Now for the business details. Lot 118, Ibeji Male & Femal Pair , Yoruba / Santeria
Here is a fine example of an exceptionally carved Ere Ibeji male and Female pair from Yoruba. Nigeria, measuring approximately 13" by 4" When the carving of the Ere Ibeji is completed. The artist is given a feast and payment as determined by the Orishas. Once the figure is brought to the family dwelling, it is placed on a shrine dedicated to Elegba with the hope that the Orisha or soul, which was split in two parts when the twins were born, will now again reside in the figure that represents the dead twin. The sculpted figure is treated and cared for as if it were alive. It is rubbed in sacramental oil, washed, fed, clothed, sung to and prayed to. It is kept standing during the day, and is laid down at night. Often it will be dressed in the same clothing as the living twin, or be decorated in a beaded vest or shown with raised sandals, ... moreindicating possible royal connections. The responsibility of caring for the ibeji is borne by the mother and female family members of subsequent generations. The sculpture is expected to avert evil from the household, strengthen the manifestations of family love, stare down death, illuminate the pathway through the valley of immortality, and bring good fortune to all who treat it with respect and offer it tokens of affection. Conversely, bad fortune and curses may be engendered if the ibeji is ignored. YOU MUST HAVE A MINIMUM OF 5 FEEDBACKS TO BID. IF YOU DON'T AND BID YOU BID WILL BE CANCELED! Bid with confidence. Starch-resist is a technique that consists of applying a dye-resisting agent to a cotton fabric by coating the surface of the cotton cloth with flour paste(cassava or cornflower) and then immersing it in a cold water dye such as indigo as is the case for this textile. Starch is only applied to one side of the cloth. Cassava starch will be applied through the zinc stencils and the stencils placed on top of the cloth would be pressed into the cloth with a metal spatula. To well perform this task the cloth will be nailed flat on a table. A series of stencils may be required to get good patterns. The cloth will then be soaked into the the indigo- dye bath repeatedly to make sure the dyeing process is well-done. The starch is then scraped off the cloth, which is hung out to dry. 72114* All content. Including pictures, Cop

An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION! Normal.dotm 0 0 1 131 751 Full Sail 6 1 922 12.0 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false This NO RESERVE auction is for a Yoruba Shango Dance Wand. These wands are intended as an object to be carried by worshippers loyal to the god Shango. Especially during celebrations that champion him, and are considered one of the most important pieces of art in the Shango cult. In the canon of Yoruba mythology, Shango, or Sango, was once a mortal king, and an ancestor of the Yoruba people. He was considered to be an extremely powerful, and often violent ruler, capable of producing thunder and lightening. This power, however, eventually resulted in his death, which came through the accidental destruction of his own palace with lightning. His followers believed that after his death. He became a ... moredeity. Wands or staffs such as these typically depict a follower of Shango. The colors red and white, sacred to Shango, often embellish the carving and are procured from natural pigments. This piece features the common kneeling female worshipper theme. Beautifully pigmented on a short, stout handle. This figure bears the traditional headdress of the Shango cult, a double-bit axe, which is large and prominent on this piece. The woman is depicted in full garb, with a cloth representatively carved over her shoulders, and resting in her hands. The wand also utilizes kaolin(white) and red pigments. Scarifications are clearly represented on the face in the carving. A fair amount of pigment, though faded, still remains on the piece, and its condition is quite good, and its patina is quite heavily encrusted. The piece does display typical age and wear related marks, including minor cracking, dings, scratches, etc, but nothing out of the ordinary. It will surely please this auction's winner! An interesting fact: Shango is the god of thunder and lightning. Fittingly. The territory the Yoruba occupy experiences one of the highest incidences of thunderstorms in the world, second only to
