Here is a fine example I would place as circa 1880. The hilt and scabbard are a tropical hardwood with a nice pattern grain. The hilt is classic Balinese design. with a mendak at the base with rose color stones. The waved blade is a real work of art by the smith. In Indonesia they are called Empus. There are 7 curves. The silvery design called pamor is the same as a damascus blade. It is created by multiple folding and twisting of the steel. It is then treated to bring out the design. This particular pattern is called Beras Wutah. Being offered is a nice old antique Moro barong sword. A good large fighting example. This sword measures 25 3/4" in total length when measured in its scabbard. Beautiful wood handle with large silver ferrule. The silver ferrule has been interspaced with twisted rattan work. The pommel is a nicely grained wood, with excellent patina. The rear beak appears to have been broken at one time but has been repaired very skillfully as you can hardly make out the break line. The front beak is in great condition. Lovely long sharp blade. There is a forging flaw to one side of the blade. The blade is not in polish but a good clean and etch would reveal some lamination along the cutting edge. This one has seen some action. The cutting edge has some nicks and there is some fine pitting along the cutting edge in the middle of the blade. This fine ... morepitting is only present along the cutting edge and not the core body of the blade. The scabbard features a very well carved wood throat. The entire body of the scabbard is wrapped in thin rattan. The toe of the scabbard with triangle decoration. The wood throat has an old repair to one side. That section of the throat broke off at some point in time and a replacement piece has been glued on. All in all, a very fine Moro barong sword.
