Old New Zealand Maori Tiki Hand Carved Wooden Box - Oceanic / Polynesian Art
Old New Zealand Maori Tiki Hand Carved Wooden Box- Oceanic/ Polynesian Art Description Offered for sale is this old hand carved wooden Maori box. Rather than a hinged lid. This box has a drawer that opens from the front(see photos) This is one of the most decorative Maori carved wooden boxes that I have ever seen. It features a carved Maori Warrior in traditional dress with a spear. The back panel features a large Tiki design in the centre with two(2) standing Tiki on either side of the panel. The front of the drawer also features a Tiki design with paua shell eyes. The sides and top of the box are covered in detailed carvings. The back of the box(back of back panel) has two(2) hooks to enable the box to wall mounted. I am unsure of the age of this box however. It would be at least 50- 60 years old, maybe even older. Sadly. The box does have ... moresome damage. At some stage, the Maori warrior’s spear and left hand have been broken off. The top of the back panel also appears to have had some pieces broken off. Unfortunately I don’t have these pieces to enable them to be repaired. Other than this damage. The box is in very good condition for its age. It is a dusty from age(I haven’t attempted to clean it and will leave that to the new owner if they wish to clean it) The box measures 25cm wide x 17cm deep x 33cm high to top of the back panel. Please feel free to contact me if you have any specific questions about the box or if you would like additional photos. Combined postage is available with other items that we currently have listed. Lime Spatula Fergusson Is Massim Oceanic Tribal Art
Fergusson Island. Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea A fine Massim lime spatula. The flat rectangular handle highly decorated in classic incised curvilinear motif. Framed by two bands of triangular motif on the top and bottom; while there are cut out holes on the top of the handle for shell and seed attachments. Remnant lime infill, and the tip is nicely betel stained. The interlocking scrolls on this spatula bear a striking similarity to those on a carving of a pig, found in Harry Berans book‘Massim Tribal Art– Papua New Guinea’ see fig 129 on pg 44. Woolongong City Gallery, 1980. We wonder then, whether this is a classic style of motif which can be attributed to Fergusson Island of the D’entrecasteaux group where we collected this piece.
