Additional Information: A standing female figure with a George Wasghington tail like hairstyle. Figures with the hairstyle George Washington queue are very often attributed to the Tabwa people where such coiffures are commonly represented on the sculpture. This figure comes from the Luba-Kalanga people. The offered figure belongs to the category of Kakudji figures and was probably used as a protective spirit. The Kalanga are originally from Maniema and now occupy the eastern region of the Hemba in the Nyuunzu territory. They are neighbors of the Boyo. Kinda, Luba-Hemba. According to the Kalanga traditions, they were driven from the shores of the Lake Tanganyika probably by the Tumbwe or Tabwa and then pushed to north of the Lukuga. Beautiful Antique Eastern Luba Kifwebe Face Mask - Congo / DRC
This is a beautiful antique Luba face mask from the Katanga region in South East DRC. The Luba is a large tribe whose establishment as an organized power can be traced back to the 16 th c. The Luba Empire then expanded through the 19 th c. before eroding in part due to the European colonization. As a major center of power. The Luba civilization produced a vast number of political and royal insignia(staff, spears, knifes, axles, cups, headrests, stools, etc. as well as masks. Eastern Luba refers to a group located at the most eastern part of Luba territory– of mixed origin(Luba, Hemba, Buyu) and at the time vassals of the Luba King. Eastern Luba also carved a variety of objects(of power and ritual) and masks– which incorporate elements of the main Luba group and from the other originating tribes. The piece here belongs to the Kifwebe type– ... morea type generally associated to the neighboring Songye although the Eastern Luba also produced such masks, in smaller numbers. It is round in shape and shows the characteristic engraved stripes radiating from the eyes, painted in red, white and black. It is made of a medium light wood. There is a small restoration on the top. Dimensions are 12.5x10.5.

The Luba have a number of different forms of divination used to determine the causes of misfortune or illness or family difficulties or simply the bad side of human experiences. Some of the greatest examples of Luba art serve specific roles in divination. Among the core Luba divination is known as Kashekesheke but is also identified among their Songye neighbors as Katatora. This sculpture would be held by the diviner and the patient who would rub it on the board or possibly on a mat or even on the ground. The diviner would ask questions and the moving sculpture would provide answers through its movements and the conversation between the diviner and the patient. It would stuck and stop moving when the diviner says the right statement or answer. Recommended Reading: Nooter. M. N. and A. F. Roberts. 1996. The most famous of the Luba masks are the round kifwebe mask with striations and white pigment. Others types of masks found among the Luba include a rounded anthropomorphic black mask, a rounded human mask with horns, and a human mask with bird beak. Luba masks are called mukishi ya kuhakwa. They represent the spirit of death and usually appear as a male-female pair and dance wearing costumes made of animal skins and woven coverings. SUPERB LUBA DIVINERS CUP BEARER FIGURE #2183 ~ For African Art Gallery
LUBA DIVINERS CUP BEARER FIGURE#2183 Tribe: Luba. Country: Democratic Republic of Congo. Material: Wood. Size: 8.25" 21 cm) Tall. Item: 2183. Condition: Superb. Luba sculptural arts of divination range from female figures holding bowls and gourds filled with found objects and amuletic figures. To potent nkishi figures with medicinal and magical charges for protetion, healing and, sometimes, aggression. The efficacy of such objects allows Bilumbu to create"organising images" leading to the hypotheses of divination. Luba bowl figures are among the best known Luba objects. With their finely formed female figures and complex compositions. When a male Bilumbu medium(diviner) is entranced, a bowl figure is often placed beside him as the wife of his possessing spirit, for he must have his Kampamba assisting him to his right, and his ... morespirit wife(the bowl figure) to his left. The interiors on the figures' bowls often retain traces of the white chalk(mpemba) that is sacred to the Luba and related groups as a vehicle for the benevolence and blessing spirit world. It is used to attract a spirit's attention, attest innocence, and validate acquittals in divination conducted during litigation. by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! LUBA CUP HOLDER
The statues representing a woman with a cup. Whatever the position whether sitting, kneeling, crouching, symbolize a divination rite. The cup contains white clay. This substance has a strong ritualistic signification all over Africa. The diviner, covered in white, used this type of statue. In this bowl certain objects could be found and by shaking the bowl and analyzing the new position of the objects the diviner could predict the future. The diviner. Painted white, used the mboko, a seated or crouched female figure holding a bowl rubbed with kaolin. He would shake her and analyze the position of the different objects the bowl contained. In the healing ritual, the sorcerer would use the habila, or daughter of the spirit, which consisted of a figure and receptacle, which were also placed at the entry to the house during childbirth. Healers ... morewere members of the buhabo association, one of the most secret and powerful societies of the region, based on the principle of mutual assistance. Luba Kneeling Female Figure DR Congo African
Type of Object, Carving. Statue, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Luba, Materials, Wood, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, 12.25 inches, Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, General wear. Shallow cracks, Luba Kneeling Female Figure. DR Congo, African Additional Information: This kneeling female figure with Luba typical hairstyle and scarification on the abdomen demonstrates the respect and importance that Luba artists lavish on women. Though the vital role of women in any society is obvious. The sculptural and ritual emphasis placed upon them by the Luba is not completely understood. According to Neyt's superb book. LUBA, The representation of women is omnipresent in Luba art. It is through woman that the ancestor reveals himself anew in the child. The kneeling female figure has her hands on the breasts as symbol ... moreof pride. Shes's proud to be the"giver of life" nourishing her descents, and as guarantor of fecundity. Such figures were kept in personal and family shrine. It is thought. However, that the artisitic dominance of the female form originated somewhere in Luba mythology. The world's greatest museums and private collections are filled with Luba sculpture, as the beauty of some of their finest pieces transcends those of almost any other African culture. For such a small group, their impact on the art world has been extraordinary. Recommended Reading: Francois Neyt. LUBA. 69458* All content. The small size of this piece suggests that this was used as a symbol and shrine piece rather than as a normal headrest which normally be should bigger than this example. This caryatid headrest has a number of classic Luba attributes: the sitting posture. The hairstyle Style, and facial features. The presence of a female on this headrest is understandable: Luba art is almost invariably female art. Woman is central in the social and political life of the Luba, and their art reflects this. Luba always carve their headrests with great care which reflects the importance of these artifacts to the owner. Headrests like this were personal items used by their owners as pillows to protect their neck and for their comfort while resting or lying on the mat. They were also used to protect their ceremonial coiffure. As François Neyt noted. Symbolically these headrests are the support of life itself. They also prevent bad dreams. The Luba excel at the veneration of feminine beauty and motherhood. And much of their skillfully crafted artworks, like this exquisite headrest, reflect this ideal.
