This item is being listed on behalf of the local Hospice Thrift Store. It was donated along with a Chiwara antelope headdress. Please ask any and all ... morequestions and I will do my best to answer your questions. But my knowledge regarding these types of items is limited. The item is very heavy at least 40 pounds, so if you would like a shipping quote, please ask. This item is available for local pickup, and shipping will be limited to the USA. The item is made of a dark solid. Smooth wood, but on the seat there is color differentiation, the wood goes from close-to-black to a lighter brown on the one side of the seat; I believe it be a decorative feature. It has been made this way and is a single piece of wood. There is a criss-cross pattern on the seat and on the seat and up to parts of the back are small inserted pieces of what I assume to be ox bone. There are no defects that I notice. The sides of the chair have diagonal cuts the length of the chair. The seat part is removable(slides out) and has an approximate length of 38" The back of the chair from top to feet is approximately 46" in length. The wood is thick at 1.5" THIS ITEM IS SUBJECT TO PRIOR SALE ON-SITE. PLEASE ASK ANY AND ALL QUESTIONS. THERE ARE NO RETURNS ON THIS ITEM. IT IS AN AUTHENTIC PIECE OF AFRICAN ART. If the actual shipping cost is below the paid shipping of 90.00. This difference will be refunded immediately to the buyer. If you would like a calculated shipping cost prior to making an offer, please e-mail.

African Tribal Creations Gallery presents. An Ashanti Stool NO RESERVE AUCTION! Normal.dotm 0 0 1 154 879 Full Sail 7 1 1079 12.0 0 false 18 pt 18 pt ... more0 0 false false false This NO RESERVE auction is for a beautiful. Well used, Ashanti Stool! Numbering nearly 2 million people, the Ashanti, or Asante, of Ghana are a widespread people in the southern portion of the country, and belong to the Akan conglomerate of ethnic groups. Most famous for their elaborate stools, which are carved for each member of the Ashanti society, they are capable craftsman, producing both fine metalwork via the lost wax casting method, and highly detailed woodwork, from maternity figures, to stools, to household items, to their internationally renowned"acua'ba" fertility dolls. The honored deceased are also commemorated with fired ceramic head busts. Understood originally to be symbolic of power. And tied closely with the succession of chiefs and kings, the Ashanti stool is a central part of their cultural identity, steeped in tradition, and even represented upon their cultural flag. The stools are said to contain the souls of their owners, and are kept and used to consult that soul after their passing. This Ghanian Ashanti stool is beautifully carved, and appears to be in good overall condition. It is normal, indeed typical for Ashanti stools to demonstrate a lean in one direction, as this would be the side that was used to sit upon. As such, a lean is present in this piece, and distinguishable in the photos. In the center of the seat is affixed a decorative piece of metal, most likely intended as a representation of prosperity. It stands successfully on its own, and in a safe room should require no additional support. This piece does display possible signs of use, and exhibits minor age cracking, as well as normal marks like edge chipping, rubbing, etc. An absolutely fantastic piece that has come to us directly from Ghana, and will undoubtedly make a beautiful addition to any quality collection! Dimensions of this stool are

Several ethnic groups divided into lineages live closely intertwined in central Zaire: the Mbole, the Yela, the Lengola, and the Metoko, and have similar associations. Antique African Bamum Wood Birthing Chair
Antique African Bamum Wood Birthing Chair Wow. What a great looking piece. The wood and carving on this two piece chair are just very nicely done. The chair was represented as a Bamum birthing chair at the sale I picked it up at. There was a label to that effect on it as well. If you think it is something else, I would appreciate you contacting me as want to make sure the folks whom are looking at and buying items from my store are being provided with accurate information. The back of the chair has a man and woman on it with a man holding something in his hand above them. Even the sides of the back have a carved design in them. Bottom of the seat has the side profile of two people. Again one appears to be a man and one a woman. The seat piece has a pair of elephants on it and then a large lizard or some other critter on the piece of the seat ... morethat sits behind the back. There is a 2.5" crack or split in the seat by the one elephant's trunk. Have seen these pieces before. But first one that I have acquired to sell at an auction. Cannot speak to whether a reproduction or an original. You need to be the judge of that before you acquire it. On the back of the seat and back there is what appears to be a scrolled"7" carved into both pieces. The back piece is 41.25" long by 15.25" across. By 1-3/16" wide. The seat piece is 31.5" long, by 15" across, by 1-3/16" wide. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures. Dogon Stool, Mali, Burkina Faso, African Tribal Creations, art door, chair nommo
An African Tribal Creations gallery Dogon Nommo Stool The Dogon are a people numbering near the 400.000 mark in the Mali and Burkina Faso region. Well known for their intricately carved doors, they settled the region of their inhabitance after fleeing persecution of their indigenous religious beliefs from the invading Muslims population to the north. Because of their resulting isolation, they have preserved many of their traditional art production methods, and are masters of producing artistic functional objects. Their art is highly versatile, and exhibits themes from their lifestyle, surroundings, and their cultural mythology. They produce a wide variety of masks and figures in addition to their famous doors, and their art has become quite popular amongst collectors. This beautiful stool is finely adorned and detailed. And was collected ... morefrom the Mali region of the Dogon's native territory. The figures present on them are believed to have spiritual power, and are intended to protect the contents of the room and its owner. This stool features a great number of Nommo figures, protective figures representative of the earliest ancestors in Dogon mythology. They are said to have been bisexual water gods, created by the ultimate god Amma, and sent to Earth in an ark, where they then founded the Dogon family lineages and introduced various activities, such as smithing, farming, etc. The stool is in good condition, displaying the normal age and wear-related rub marks, scratches, etc. It's upper surface is decorated with a finely hand hammered sheet of metal. It also bears a faded and worn greenish pigment on much of its surface. A very nice and uncommon piece ready to be added to your collection! Dimensions are 16.5" tall x 8" in diameter. Bronze Cast Mbamelke African Judgment Chair
Mbamelke African Judgment Chair. Made of cast bronze with intricate figurines, with 2 matching round side tables. A museum Quality Antiquity.Throughout history, cultures have used various types of torture devices to force the truth. Or in this case a confession. Many West and Central African tribes used"judgment chairs" in their criminal trials, chairs that were believed to have the power to the reveal the truth. This intricately decorated chair was used by the Mbamelke of Cameroon. The Mbamelke used separate chairs for both male and females. If you notice, the figures on the chair depict male and female spirits. The accused was forced to sit in the chair during the trial and if they were found guilty of a crime. Such as murder or adultery, they would actually be executed while sitting in the chair. I had the chance to sit in the ... morechair, and for some reason, it just had a sort of macabre feeling about it. Now you know why.

antique slave chair primitive handmade 1872 family heirloom African Americana
This is a wonderful antique primitive slave chair. Original owner was Sister Irene Johnson. Her father made the chair in 1872. Since he made this chair it has been in the same African American family. There are bits of paint here and there including green. Yellow, red, brown and a bright blue that is peeling off. The chair is 24" tall and the round seat is 14" in diameter. There are bent wood pieces secured with nails. Old heavy ugly screws and the original old nails. I acquired this chair from an antique shop in the south. Do not remember the state since its been 20 years at least. The gentleman told me it belonged to a sister Irene Johnson and had been in their family for a lifetime. He said her father a slave, made the chair from a chair his owner gave him. Aparently it was common for nannys, chamber maids and nursemaids to have ... morea low chair to sit at the bedside of slave owners. It is very old and used a lot. It has a wonderful primitive look. Just as it is and thats how we have used it. There is some writing on the base of the chair saying she died in 1981 and was 109 years old. I cannot authenticate this with documents. It is word of mouth only. The chair looks to be a childs chair. But he told me slaves often shortened adults chairs, fixed the broken wood and used them. I have really enjoyed this old primitive chair over the years. I am downsizing and need to give it up. Please ask any questions you may have. The chair weighs 6 lbs. and will need a large box. I will pay a portion of the shipping. So please wait for my invoice. If you would like to ask what the cost will be with the discount before bidding please just email or ask via the ebay ask a question at the end of the listing. Thanks and have a great day. The facial features and her hands wildly opened, the figure exhibits traits attributed to the Fante sculpture. Among the Fante such carvings are identified as a queen-mother or priestess figures use in a shrine as a fertility figure. The history of the Fante is tied of course to that of the Akan Kingdom. Which rose to power during the 13thC as a result of the abundance of gold found in their homelands. Over the centuries, the most powerful faction of the Akan, the Asante, emerged as a result of their control over the trade routes for gold merchants. The Asante were brutal and demanding, and as a result, smaller groups of Akan began to splinter off, moving towards the coast and into parts of Cote d'Ivoire. The Fante were one of these groups who chose to separate themselves as much as possible from the Asante, settling along the western coast of Ghana. Though they became somewhat autonomous, helped ironically by the British during their occupation until 1957, the Fante are still even today at the mercy of the p

African Tribal Birthing Chair With Snake and Turtle design Carvings on the Back
African Tribal Birthing Chair With Snake and Turtle design Carvings on the Back What a fascinating artefact from Africa. On the back is the carving of 2 turtles either side of a serpent or snake. In African mythology the chief centre of serpent worship was Dahomey. But the cult of the python seems to have been of exotic origin, dating back to the first quarter of the 17th century. By the conquest of Whydah the Dahomeyans were brought in contact with a people of serpent worshipers, and ended by adopting from them the beliefs which they at first despised. At Whydah, the chief centre, there is a serpent temple, tenanted by some fifty snakes. Every python of the danh-gbi kind must be treated with respect. And death is the penalty for killing one, even by accident. Danh-gbi has numerous wives. Who until 1857 took part in a public procession from ... morewhich the profane crowd was excluded; a python was carried round the town in a hammock, perhaps as a ceremony for the expulsion of evils. The rainbow-god of the Ashanti was also conceived to have the form of a snake. His messenger was said to be a small variety of boa, but only certain individuals, not the whole species, were sacred. In many parts of Africa the serpent is looked upon as the incarnation of deceased relatives. Among the Amazulu, as among the Betsileo of Madagascar. Certain species are assigned as the abode of certain classes. The Maasai, on the other hand, regard each species as the habitat of a particular family of the tribe. In African fairy tales. The tortoise is the most clever animal. Mzee(Swahili for"wise old man" is the name of a 130-year-old Aldabra tortoise. So quite an important symbolism upon this chair. It measures 21" high x 13" wide x 31" deep. There has been a little woodworm which has now gone and the seat has a split but does not detract from the seating or look. This will be flat packed very carefully and bidders from overseas are welcome to bid but postage will be costly due to the weight and size.
Rare 19th Century African Island Etc Birthing Stool Chair Etc 3 Leg Figural
For your consideration is a a rare 19th Century African. Island, etc birthing stool or some other kind of stool or chair. I am not an expert in this area. The item was recently purchased at a local auction. The consignor believed the stool was an African 200 year old birthing stool. The family he purchased it from told them their wealthy aunt traveled all over the world and this particular item was brought back to America from one of her travels in the 1920s-30s. I had someone else think it was 19th Century and African. I will guarantee that at the very least it dates back to the early 20th Century, but I am of the opinion it is 19th Century as well. Since I am not an expert, I will leave it up to those in the know. An expert opinion is appreciated so I can at least put it in the correct category if I do not have it right. AFRICAN SENUFO CHIEF"S CEREMONIAL CHAIR- Hand Carved in the Ivory Coast
African Senufo Chair This chair is all hand carved by artisans within the Senufo villages of the Ivory Coast. It is very sturdy and can be used. The legs are male and female figures thickly carved. There are a few of these chairs on different websites but not all have the same look. This particular chair has a few areas which make it very rare and unique. The arm rests have bird figures which sit on a carved out bowl probably used to hold something during ceremonies. Decorative chairs like this were used by Chief's during important events throughout the year. The back rest of the chair has a brass turtle insert and both armrests have a brass face inserted in them. The chair has the hornbill represented on it which is not seen on every chair. This exclusive item has so many features making it stand out and it is a rare opportunity to own ... morea unique piece. If it wasn't for moving it would be kept but alas it's time to find it another home. This looks superb with an orange or red throw on it. The piece stands out and makes for great conversation about the art and the people. Please see all pictures being sure to use the scroll down button as I have added as many pictures as e-bay allows{12} and the size is seen on the first picture with arrows. As it was the best way to give dimensions. This is circa 1940's and has some nice patina. Small splits on the base and cracks are normal to a piece like this. Please feel free to ask questions. Shipping method to be determined by buyer and fees to be paid by buyer. The Senufo are a dominant culture in Cote d'Ivoire. And they extend across the border into Mali. The Senufo carve numerous male and female figures in a variety of positions, as well as many remarkable masks. It is thought that most important Senufo sculptures are produced by"professional" carvers known to the village, and this accounts for the rather standardized artistic traits found in most of their ritual objects. All Senufo art is made by specialized artisans. Which may diminish regi

African primitive carved wood chair - original two pieces elephant sculpture
Hello Shopper- I have for sale a lovely African carved elephant wooden chair. It is two simple pieces than can be separated. Makes it handy for shipping or storage. The story that I know of it.The chair was brought to America by a man from Africa. He tried for awhile to import many items from Africa selling them at a local swap meet. That is where the present owner acquired the chair which fit nicely in her African themed room. That was ten years ago. The chair has been in storage for some time. The chair is very solid when assembled and quite comfy oddly enough. It is in its original finish which has aged to a lovely shabby look. The detail of the elephant is plainly seen and simple but elegant. I would love for the chair to go to someone who will enjoy it and use it.
