The woman that I acquired this bracelet from said that she acquired it second hand and she did not know anything about. I did not know much about it either ... moreother than it looked like an old tribal piece. After doing some research. I am pretty sure that it is a bronze currency bracelet from Africa. To my eye, it looks most like the currency bracelets made by the Bamoun-Tikar people in Cameroon. It looks vintage or antique to me with a nice dark patina. I think that the green or verdigris might be applied. I leave it to the buyer to determine exactly how old it is and where it is from. The overall diameter is about 4 1/2 to 4 3/4 inches. At its widest. It is about 3 3/4 inches wide. It weighs close to 1 pound 8 ounces. The gap between the open ends measures slightly less than 1 1/8 inches. The inside diameter measured from one side to the other is slightly over 2 1/4 inches. So your wrist should be narrower than that for it to be comfortably worn. The condition is much like you see it in my photos. It is generally in excellent condition with patina or tarnish and what looks like verdigris. There are irregularities that are expected of hand made items. Otherwise. There is no damage. My photos should give you a good idea of its general condition. I guarantee this bracelet to be as described and represented by my photos. The photos are part of the description. Those paying with Paypal must have a confirmed address registered with Paypal. If you pay with Paypal. I will ship only to your confirmed address. I like to leave feedback after I know that the item has arrived and that the buyer is satisfied. I reserve the right to cancel any bids without explanation. Please email me with any questions or suggestions. I do not ship on weekends. I might not be available to answer email on weekends. Mali, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, People, ... moreLobi, Materials, Iron, Approximate Age, Early to Mid 20th century, Dimensions, 13.25 inches long, Overall Condition, Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, Rusted patina Lobi Iron Snake Currency. African Metalwork Additional Information: A hand-forged iron snake coming from the Lobi. The Lobi live as farmers and spend much time in their fields. They have produced numerous iron. Brass, and bronze figures currencies and and jewelry depicting the snake. This can be understood as the snake is very often associated to the Lobi mythical beings. Also, the Lobi encounter numerous serpents, including the Bites viper and the Boa Constrictor. To protect them from the dangers that the snakes represent forged iron snakes were either worn on their person or placed on personal altars. In addition to examples such as this serpent that probably served as an altar object, women will attach smaller sinuous, flat-modeled images of serpents to the sides of their legs just above the ankle reaching up the leg close to the knee. Generally placed on the outer side of the leg they may often be on the inside of the leg or both sides as well. The bodies will be displayed with a sinuous set of curves as though the snakes were moving through the grass. In many cases, the heads are simply defined as a triangular shape with the mouth possibly noted with a thin line beaten into the side of the face. The tails are depicted by a tapering form and the body has the usual undulated snake form. Among the Lob

This type of copper or bronze bracelet and currency were first cast in the elongated form and then beaten into the bracelet shape. After being cast in ... morethe lost wax technique designs were worked onto the surface with a steel chisel. The main function of these bracelets was decorative however they retained value by the very nature of the material they were made of as copper alloy could be recast into other forms. They thus were valued as currency as well as decoration. This bracelet is thought to be well over 200 years. It measures 5" across and 9"tall and 16" around at largest point. The design work is truly beautiful and the slight oxidation adds to the charm and statement of age. Bracelets such as this have been found in various parts of Zaire. The weight is nine pounds. Rough on the interior from the initial pressing and smooth as silk on the exterior. Truly elegant. Makes a wonderful piece of sculpture and can be held by a stand or it stands by itself on end or on its side.

AFRICAN BRONZE SLAVE TRADE, CURRENCY, HEAVY BRACELETS MANILLAS
AFRICAN BRONZE SLAVE TRADE. CURRENCY, HEAVY BRACELETS MANILLAS I'm into county primitives.so I have to admit.I'm totally out of my element with these'bracelets' I purchased them from a reputable dealer about 20 years ago. I was told they were slave bracelets.but I have not seen Manillas this ornate. Yet the are VERY heavy and can't see them being fashionable. They measure 3.25" x 2.75" x 1.25" and 3.25" x 2.75" x.75" I would appreciate any info you could provide. The condition is excellent.because there's not a lot you could do to damage these pieces. They are very old and very interesting and I hope will go to a home where they can be appreciated. Be sure to visit our other auctions.

African tribal YORUBA brass currency bracelet, ethnographic art, jewelry, decor
Cerre Perdue(last wax) casting was a later development than to open mold of sand casting. Many of lost wax showed Persian or Coptic influence. By the 19th century bracelets were used to purchase food and palm wine. To compensate diviners, to satisfy court claims, to contract for a wife and to be buried with. The form, weight, and composition of bracelet money clearly mattered to participants in any transaction. The sheer value verifies their wide spread use. A long-long lived monetary function of bracelets was their use for wealth storage and display. The early Benin use of bracelets. The simpler ... morebut more laborious process of drawing wire was used in Central Africa. This technique was refined in particular by the Kamba. Chagga, and Kekuyu of Kenya, the Longo, the Hutu of Barundi, the Bemba, the Nyamwezi, and Yeke, the Lembe, and Tremovaaland the Zulu. Casting was probably the primary method used in west Africa through Sudan. This Hausa bracelet measures 4" wide. One of many fine examples of the art of bracelet making in Africa!

The Lobi live ... moreas farmers and spend much time in their fields. Antique African Hand Forged Iron Hoe on Stand/Currency?/Excavated?
Antique African hoe; 10 1/2" H with stand. Hoes were very valued in farming areas of Africa due to their relationship to agriculture. Saved, and used as currency. I don't have much information about this piece that came from the collector below, but some of the things I bought from the estate had been excavated from sites near Mali on the Niger river. This piece has a very thick, wonderful rust patina, that looks like it had been buried for a long time, and a second axe head I bought at the same time also has a think blue patina and has obviously been excavated. This is a simple but beautiful object I think! Item came from the very large estate of African art that belonged to a long time Santa Fe collector and dealer who bought many of his things in the 1960's and 1970's when he had a gallery in Santa Fe. Much of what I bought ... morewas very old and many things rare. Please watch my store as I list more metal things I bought. Including sculptures, sword, knives, weapons and currency items. I will also be listing older trade beads and pygmy bark cloth drawings I was able to buy as well. gsrx_vers_486(GS 6.5.1(486)

If one of them became legitimately broken, its value could only be restored in a special ceremony conducted by a shaman. Therefore, it was said to have a"soul. African Tribal Currency Bracelet/Anklet Ethnographic Art, Bronze Jewelry AWESOM!
This amazing piece of ART or jewelery once had it's home with the Baule People of Cote d' Ivorie where it was made. An extraordinary bracelet or anklet made from bronze using the old lost wax casting of copper and tin alloy is thought to be from the 19th century conservatively. The condition is exceptional. No damage or repair shows it was clearly a favored old piece remaining unchanged from the t ime of it's acquisition in the 1940's. Pieces such as this served as currency but also as a show of wealth. The minute intricate detail of this piece is most remarkable! Three scorpions adorn it as well as the head of some marvelous character which extends out from the piece itself. It's nose or mouth as well as what appear to be ears hold bars of metal that imply more wealth! Scalloped and detailed half circles line both sides ... moreand appear on the body of the piece along with two whole detailed circles at the neck of the mysterious creatures elongated triangular head which may represent eyes. This design element is typical for Baule jewelry This is certainly worthy of being noted as a collectors piece. The weight is.9 lbs. The measurements are 4" across and 1.5" in height or width. Antique African Tribal Currency Bracelet/Silver/Alloy?
This bracelet is genuinely very old- how old is beyond my expertise. I bought it as part jewellery lot at an auction house which recently sold the contents of a mansion house in West Wales. There were many ancient and valuable antiquities sold- most of them from ethnic and oriental origins. The family having travelled and collected extensively during their lives. This bracelet was included in a separate box of tribal jewellery to include currency bracelets and beaded necklace. Which I am currently selling. It is, however, different from the other bracelets- much finer- beautifully made with the same rustic quality.

Nigeria, People, Mambila or Mfunte, Materials, iron, Approximate Age, mid 20th century, Dimensions, 27.5 inches Long x 10.5 inches Wide, Overall Condition, Fair. Damage/Repair, Rusty surface. Shallow cracks, chips, Additional Information: The wonderful variety of metal objects found in Africa is essentially a function of the need to trade and ... morestore wealth not as one might assume. For weapons. These carefully-forged pieces were used for large, though infrequent, purchases of land or animals, and the transfer of wealth at major events such as births and initiations. The most commonplace use of iron and other metal objects was as"brideprice, the compensation of a family for the loss of a daughter to marriage. Most of these"currencies" were developed alongside traditional metal objects such as blades, tools, bracelets and anklets. While some pieces continued to be used for work or decorative purposes, most evolved into"pure" money, unusable except as objects recognized, prized and accepted widely as payment. This rare iron forged money is from the Mambila, an ethnic group from Cameroon, a very famous money used in local transactions. The Mambila had to trade this kind of iron currency from the Kwadja, a blacksmithing group according to Marc Ginzberg, 2000, p.192. Later on. Colonialism put new western currencies oon the market and ends the use of local currencies which resulted in the scattered nature of the iron currencies such as this. A similar currency is attributed to the Mfunte of Nigeria

African tribal currency Bamana iron lamp, outdoors, decor, ethnographic art,Mali
This is a multi-armed lamp with cups to hold oil at the end of the arms. Oil known as tulu. Made from the Karite tree nut was burned in the cups to produce a dark, smoky light that was as much a light for ritual purposes as for illumination. Lamps such as this would serve in the house but also would provide light, real and ritual, for masks when they danced at night. The small forged bird at the top is praising God with either a Muslem position of prayer or a traditionalist animist's gesture of prayer. The arms of the lamp repeat this gesture. Small spoons hanging by chains were used to adjust the wick, made of twisted cotton burning in the Karite oil. This lamp with it's standardized forms is an example of the change of style in Bamana lamps as other forms of iron material became available and in this instance the arms and support ... moreof the lamp is riveted together rather than fully forged. Yet it must be noted that the figure has been forged and hammered to an abstract figure in the profile. It measures 32" in length and 15" in width. It is thought to come from the late 19th or early 20th century.

TRIBAL AFRICAN TOPOKE DOA BLADE SPEAR CURRENCY DRC CONGO EX HUGHES COLLECTION
Topoke Doa Blade Spear Currency- Democratic Republic of Congo Early-Mid 20th Century. Original Iron. Patina Height 137.1cm( 54in) Ex-Wague Collection. Kansas City, MO Ex-Hughes Collection. Mission Hills, MO, 1991(Cat No. AF-104) Also. A former museum or educational institution deaccession(displays a catalog number on blade stem- No. 22.484 and a decal on base A243) Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes. The Topoke may have originated to the north of the Congo River. In the Ubangi-Uele basin. They would have abandoned this territory when threatened by the Baboa and Zande people. During their march to the south, they would have first settled on the right bank of the Congo River around the lower Aruwimi. From there they crossed the river to settle in their current territory, ... morehaving driven the original Bangando and Bambole inhabitants further south. There are cultural affinities between the Topoke and the Mongandu and Bambole peoples. Appropriate of age, origin and medium. Large forged blades in the shape of spearheads were well used into the middle of the 20th century as currency and during marriage ceremonies. They have many names: dihunga(for smaller versions) doa(for larger versions) Other names include Linganda and Ngbele. During marriage ceremonies up to 60 doa might be exchanged for the bride. These were specially shaped to look like spearheads but were too thin and long to serve as such. These unique currency forms were well worked and were often embellished with a number of parallel lines close to the edges. Note this large currency blade was acquired from the Brahima Wague Collection of Kansas City. Larry Hughes purchased the artifact on August 17. 1989 as he kept meticulous records for all his fine art acquisitions. Larry Hughes was an avid collector of African sculpture, pottery, basketry, bead work, as well as Native American and Oceanic art. He was also a patron of the arts in the Kansas City area(Nelson-Atkins Museum, A

Katanga Cross, African Currency, Authentic Artifact, #9
Katanga Cross. African Currency, Authentic Artifact, 9 This X-shaped ingot of cast copper. Usually referred to as a Katanga Cross. Comes from Katanga, a rich mining region in the south-eastern portion of the Democratic Republic of Congo(formerly Zaire) along the Kasai River. It is the classic currency associated with the region and probably the best known form of African tribal currency. For centuries these crosses served as indications of wealth and were used for dowry payments and trade. Since they have been found in burial sites, they have also been associated with funerary rituals. The most common forms of traditional money in Africa were made of metal. Either forged or cast- which had the great advantage of storing wealth in a form that might be melted down and refashioned into a tool or a weapon if the need arose. This one weighs: 740 ... moregrams and is about 8 1/2" in size. Authentic and guaranteed. Priced right and a 14 Day money back guarantee. Feel free to email me with any questions.
