Excellent condition. This is a Baga protective serpent, known in the literature under various names: Bansonyi, A-mantsho-na-tshol or Inap. The serpent here represented is said to be similar to the ferocious python which spirit called Ninkinanka is involved in curing infertility and droughts. Bringing prosperity, wealth, and rain. It also appears at funerals. This sculpture was worn on the top of the head. With a headdress to hold it fitting around the shoulders. This is a very good example of Baga snake headdress showing some age. It would hold a prominent place in a collection. Worn areas, lost of paint and pigment, age cracks, several age cracks tribally repaired, overall condition very good. Thank you and please view my other items. BACKGROUND Today. The Baga people occupy the northern coast of Guinea and the southern coast of Guinea-Bissau. They live in the marshy area flooded six months of the year, during which time the only way to get around is by a dugout canoe. They live in villages divided into two to four quarters, which are in turn divided into five or six clans. Traditionally, the village is headed by the eldest member of each clan. The men fish and grow cola nuts; the women grow rice. Spiritually, they believe in a single god, known as Kanu, assisted by a male and female spirits. The only fundamental ritual is initiation, which takes place every twenty-four years. Before burial, the dead are displayed in a sacred wood and their belongings are buried. Baga had rich traditions of multifunctional masks and sculpture, many of which were suppressed with the advent of Islam. The best known of these is the massive Nimba(or Dumba) ma

Apparently, and for the layman, the mask is an artistic and technical phenomenon which can signify, through the ubiquity of this sculpture in Black Africa, ... morea unity of artistic expression, a stage of technological advancement, a modality of cultural expression. The mask is not in reality this sculpted figure that we are accustomed to seeing, it is a character, a being who represents both a divinity and a force in human society. BEAUTIFUL BAGA PEOPLE OLD NIMBA CARVED WOOD STATUE FROM GUINEA 1
You are bidding on a Beautiful BAGA PEOPLE Old Carved Wood NIMBA Statue. From Guinea. This item looks old. Wooden figures. Often worn or carried in the form of masks, are used by the initiation societies to educate initiates about the role of the spirits whom they represent. Large wooden serpent figures appear at initiations, and carved anthropomorphic figures are placed on shrines. The ancestors are represented in figures that embody both human and animal characteristics. Geographically the Baga belong to the coast, yet their art is more stylistically akin to that found in the Western Sudan region. The Baga have lived in their current location since the 14th century. They migrated to this area from the interior highlands in upper Niger accompanied by several other peoples who share linguistic similarities. Including the Landuma, Tyapi, and ... moreTemne peoples. From the 14th to the early 20th century they were repeatedly invaded by the Nalu, Susu, Djalonke, Maninka, and the Fulbe among others. In the late 19th century French domination led to colonization. Since independence, many Baga peoples have abandoned some of their traditional ways in favor of Guinean nationalism. Religious life among the Baga is focused primarily on lineage-based men's and women's societies. The creator god is known as Kanu. And the highest recognized spiritual being other than Kanu is Somtup, the male spirit who governs the men's initiation society. The female society is governed by a-Bol, the wife of Somtup. Shrines are also kept by individual families in an effort to remember and appease the ancestors. Elek are carved shrine objects, which symbolize the lineage and offer protection for the family. Baga Nimba Headdress Mask, African Tribal Creations, art, Guinea, Dumba, Bagga
African Tribal Creations presents. A Baga Nimba Figure Resident to Guinea and Guinea-Bissau. The Baga people are a curious and relatively small ethnic group that reside in a region which floods severely for half of the year. The only method of distance transportion is a dugout canoe, and fishing, as well as marshland agriculture(rice, kola nuts, etc. make up their primary livelihood. A monotheistic people, their only ritual is societal initiation, which occurs only once every twenty four years. Art among the Baga people, as well as tradition, has been significantly depleted and repressed due to the advent of Islam in the region. Their most well-known sculpture, is the Nimba(or Dumba) figure, a large, quasi-humanoid figure that displays a large pair of breasts and a long, narrow, almost equine head with a large nose and human-like facial features. ... moreThe figure stand on four legs and would be hoisted onto the dancer's shoulders, where he would be covered beneath the legs under a skirt of raffia fiber. The figures are produced in a number of sizes, the largest of which are used in fertility ceremonies, especially those timed around agricultural harvest periods. Nimba, in the Baga mythology, is a sort of'Earth mother' called upon for needs of fertility and is representative of the most dignified points of Baga culture. This beautiful Nimba figure is a large domestic size. Meaning a home or shrine sized figure, but not a full sized Nimba(which could often be four to five feet in height, weighing several hundred pounds) It is in beautiful condition, displaying normal age related wear, and is finely detailed, with the numerous linear identifying scarification marks characteristic of these figures. It bears a dark chocolate brown patina, encrusted in several places, which displays the common evidence of age, transport, and exposure, including minor rub marks, scratches, etc. The small spike on the back of the neck has at some point in the past been broken off. This appears to be a very old and minor break. It s

Caryatid drums such as this known as a-Ndef used by Baga women serve to focus their identity and solidarity and shape their rituals. Smaller than the men’s drum, a-Ndef are displayed and beaten publicly during elaborate marriage ceremonies, funerals and while accompanying dancers. The main figure here is a charming contemporary woman wearing carved sleepers. Skirt, jewelry, and diadem. This example has a shinny surface and pigment the enhance the beauty of this piece of art. African Tribal Collection - Baga Tsakala Figure Simo Society, Guinea
Description Authentic African antiquities& artefacts for discerning collectors(Most pieces sourced by us direct from remote villages) THE AFRICAN TRIBAL COLLECTION Item Number: MA1146 Originates from: Guinea Tribe: Baga Materials: Wood, Condition: Weathered; fair condition for its age. Approximate age: Early 20C Measurements cm: Height 64 Width 18 Field collected by us from a village in the Boke region of Lower Guinea near the border of Guinea-Bissau. Baga had rich traditions of multifunctional masks and sculpture. Many of which were suppressed with the advent of Islam. The best known of these is the massive Nimba( or Dumba) mask. With its great cantilevered large nose, crested head supported on the upper part of a female torso, carved so as to rest on the shoulders of the wearer, his body hidden in raffia fiber. The mask can also stand ... moreon four legs. Sterile women in the Simo secret society invoked it as the Mother of Fertility, and it was used at the first-fruit(rice) rituals, symbolically associating female fertility with the increase of the grain. This mask appears at the harvest and threshing of the rice crop, is worn by dancers at birth, marriages and other joyful ceremonies. The Baga also produced statues on round columns, called tambaane. Tsakala, or kelefa: extremely large head. Compressed on both sides, in angular, stylized construction; jutting nose; arms without hands, or hands resting under the chin. They were kept in round huts by the Simo society. Much of the profits raised from this sale will go a little way to help some impoverished children and villagers in the Moyen Cavally Region of Cote D'Ivoire and Liberia. We are supporting an orphanage there as well as several villages to which we supply seeds. Food and clean water solutions. The sculpture has a gorgeous dark patina. This is a shrine piece. Known as a a-tshol from the Baga people of Guinea. The basket around tha base indicate the piece was also used as a headpiece and probably, was also danced as a mask. These are some of the most sacred and complex sculptures found among the Baga and served as shrines to protect the clan against negative forces. A-Tshol worked to heal as a curative agent. To disclose wrongdoers and fight sorcery and to determine appropriate retribution for unacceptable social behavior. Farmers would also approach the a-Tshol during planting season to assure a successful harvest. The Baga are a small West African ethnic group living in a coastal area of swamps and inland waterways in Guinea bordering the Atlantic Ocean. The term Baga identifies not only a people or an area but also equally identifies shared cultural traditions and art forms with neighboring Nalu and Landuma and the dominant Susu people. Sculpture from the Baga people along the Atlantic seaboard has been known and documented for an extended period of time as early as the middle of the nineteenth century. Baga art traditions hav
African Baga Snake 40 inches long--beautiful
Beautiful carved wood serpent headdress from Guinea. Carved on both sides and painted in white. Black and red pigment. Wearing these headdresses requires unbelievable balance(the headdress balances vertically on the top of the wearer's head) Measures 40 inches tall and 6 inches across. Looks great and does have superficial cracks and worn areas. No repairs. I have been collecting African art for 20 years and am in the process of curating and culling my own collection. Sort of impossible. But after so many years, I do have some pieces that don't really fit in. I am not an expert, just someone who experienced love-at-first-sight the first time I saw a huge carved mask hanging at a friend's house. I combine shipping and generally ship within 24 hours of receiving payment. I will send these items as economically as possible. Some ... moreof the larger and heavier masks and sculptures may be cheaper to send via FedEx. I would be happy to provide an accurate quote. Please let me know if you have any questions-I respond quickly.
African tribal drum, Baga,Guinea (88 cms / 34.5 ins tall) --- Tribal Eye Gallery
After many years of collecting and selling tribal art. I have amassed a large body of work and have now opened on Ebay, The Tribal Eye' gallery. With an artistic background. I feel I have a good eye for quality. The majority of this tribal art has been gathered from extensive searches throughout Europe and from the many contacts I have built up over the years. If you would like to enquire about areas of interest that you cannot see in the gallery. Please contact me. Postage costs- UK £15.00-Europe £ 25.00- for all other locations. Please ask. The Baga people live in the coastal lowlands of Guinea. Here is a drum from the Baga of Guinea. Circa late 19 th century. Of high quality. The cylindrical drum section has symbolic designs carved into the wood. Below this. Two figures and a horse are carved. It is thought that the horse ... morewas included, suggesting power and strength but in reality, the climate in Guinea would be too intense for a horse. Carved from a single solid piece of wood. There is considerable wear, due to tribal use and age, but it is solid. There are some obvious tribal repairs, for example to the horse and figures. Also due to wear. The base is uneven, but a small wedge can compensate for this and the drum stands well. Regardless of the drum’s condition. I suggest it to be of very high quality. Measures- 88 centimetres/ 34 and a half inches tall Weighs- 5 kilos(Images 3 and 12 include a lighter. To further illustrate the size of the drum) Postage costs- UK £15.00-Europe £ 25.00- for all other locations. Please ask. Items can be sent worldwide Please look at my other items for sale in the- Tribal Eye Gallery- thank you.

Antique African Tribal carving statue Baga Drum
INTRO These pieces are part of an old collection of Gloria Anver in the United States of America. A lot of the pieces were bought at an auction in Connecticut where a museum was de-accessioning some of its acquisitions. All pieces were purchased around 35 years ago and old at the time of purchase. Many are interesting and very old. DETAILS OF PIECE Antique Tribal carved Baga drum West Africa Very interesting Baga tribal drum from Guinea. West Africa This drum is used by the"a-Tekan, a woman's secret society. The women in this tribe traditionally balance large baskets and water containers on their heads, making the drum as object on this woman's head in keeping with tribal visual tradition. The snake is a powerful phallic symbol winding completely around the drum and may be connected to fertility and worship of the sea goddess"Mameywata. ... moreAccording to the Baga, a-Tëkän" was even more important than the male secret society, and would perform during the initiations of new members, at great public feasts, at wedding celebrations, and during the reception of important visiting dignitaries. Women's performances usually entailed a group of drummers and a circle of dancers, all members of"a-Tëkän. TAll color, patination, and imperfections in the piece are in"as found" condition; the piece was acquired well over 30 years ago and quite old then. Though the leather drum head is not intact, we felt the piece was old enough and significant enough to be worth preserving, whether for a musicologist, ethnologist, or someone simply appreciating a beautiful well-worn sculpture of scale, made for important tribal use. The piece measures 38 ½ inches tall, 13 1/2 inches diam. The female figure itself is 27 inches tall. Items can sell fast so take action Now. Exquiste & Rare Banda Mask w/Intricate Designs, Baga Nalu Tribe, Guinea
Baga had rich traditions of multifunctional masks and sculpture. Many of which were suppressed with the advent of Islam. The best known of these is the massive Nimba( or Dumba) mask. With its great cantilevered large nose, a large pair of breasts, crested head supported on the upper part of a female torso. Carved so as to rest on the shoulders of the wearer, his body hidden in raffia fiber. The mask can also stand on four legs. This mask represented the very essence of Baga dignity and culture. The Simo society ... moreutilized very large polychrome masks(often more than 5 feet tall) known as banda or boke which are used in fertility rituals by this society. Played a part during the dry season, after the rice harvest, and at funerals. It has an elongated human face with the jaws of a crocodile, the horns of an antelope, the body of a serpent and the tail of a chameleon. Baga craftsmen also carve anok. A-tscol or elek. Bird heads with human features that were used at harvest time and funerary rites. Also by the members of the Simo society. Every family owns an elek, which is part of the family shrine, together with other objects: stones, vine twigs and bark reddened by cola nuts, dead scorpions or jaws of crabs, and a fly swatter, important for purification ceremonies and indispensable in the hunt for witches. The elek represents the lineage of which it is protector and the most visible sign. It punishes the guilty. For it a;one is able to pursue witches wherever they may be. They all have caryatid figures, animals, or geometric forms supporting the barrel of the drum. The example illustrated here is probably a variant of A-ndef type. Caryatid drums known as A-Ndef used by Baga women serve to focus their identity and solidarity and shape their rituals. Smaller than the men’s drum. A-Ndef drums are displayed and beaten publicly during elaborate marriage ceremonies, funerals and while accompanying dancers. The supporting female figure is often shown holding a child. Very large drums were beaten only by men. Ve

Excellent condition. This is a Baga protective serpent, known in the literature under various names: Bansonyi, A-mantsho-na-tshol or Inap. The serpent here represented is said to be similar to the ferocious python which spirit called Ninkinanka is involved in curing infertility and droughts. Bringing prosperity, wealth, and ... morerain. During the initiation of young boys, the serpent mask is involved in protecting boys at circumcision. In some sub-groups of Baga people, it appears during the initiation of young girls. It also appears at funerals. This sculpture was worn on the top of the head. With a headdress to hold it fitting around the shoulders. This is a very good example of Baga snake headdress showing some age. It would hold a prominent place in a collection. 1518 African Tribal- Old stunning Baga Bansonyi Serpent, Guinea Bissau
African Tribal Collection. Baga Bansonyi Serpent. Guinea Bissau. Description Authentic African antiquities& artefacts for discerning collectors(Most pieces sourced by us direct from remote villages) THE AFRICAN TRIBAL COLLECTION Item Number: MA1518 Originates from: Guinea Bissau Tribe: Baga Materials: Wood. Faded kaolin pigment Condition: Weathered; fair condition Approximate age: Mid-late 20th Century Measurements cm: Height 211 Width 34 Depth 20 An amazing Baga Snake. Very rare as they are so large to bring back from Africa. This is one we acquired from a small island just off Guinea Bissau. Baga serpent(Bansonyi or a-Mantsho-na-Tshol) The Baga Snake. Bansonyi, normally displayed as an upright static sculpture is in reality a headdress representing the spirit“A- Mantsho-na-Tshol. With the help of a light framework, the towering polychrome ... moredecorated serpent is held on the shoulders of a dancer concealed beneath a raffia covering. This dressing is detailed with multi-sized bells, lavish colorful feathers and tribal cloths. The dancer moves rapidly among the cries of the on lookers, shaking and twirling around to create confusion, agitation and dramatic motion during the performance. The Bansonyi is involved in protecting male initiates at circumcision; it is used during droughts as well as appearing at funerals in groups as a male and female pair. It is thought that the Bansonyi itself symbolizes a reconciliation between the aquatic world and the jungle, between east and west or the two halves of the village. This artistic marvel is coveted by collectors. Round serpentine curves are most desirable and adds value to the piece.
