Here we have a fascinating vintage ceremonial axe that we believe comes from the Songye tribe in present-day Congo. This weapon is very heavy. With a ... morelarge thick metal blade that is decorated with face set into what appears to be ornamental iron. The blade itself has small dots going across the length of it. The handle is covered in some type of leather. Please read the condition notes and inspect the photos carefully. Measurements: 16" inches long. 9.25" inches wide(from edge of handle to edge of blade. Condition: Obvious signs of age and wear including some rusting. Metal pitting, nicks, scratches, and cracks in the leather handle. There is a part of a sticker present on the blade, presumably from a previous trade, but we did not attempt to remove it. The blade has a little bit of wobblyness to it. Please inspect the photos carefully as we have tried to capture the imperfections. Sold AS IS. WA

Nice Pende hat with multicolor beading on a basketry base. Also included in this lot is this very unusual light-wooden axe covered with a knitted multicolor ... morenetting of multi-toned palm fibers. The wood of the axe shaft is broken in the center of the shaft, but that's unnoticeable as the netting is holding the object together firmly. The triangular portion of the axe is formed by wooden sticks on the angled sides to support the netting but the front edge of the triangular shape is just netting. I wish I could provide more information about this axe, but in all my years of collecting I've never seen another one. Hat is approximately 8" long by 6" wide. African Carved Wood Handle Axe - Congo Old!
African Carved Wood Handle Axe- Congo Old! Click to View Image Album Click to View Image Album Featured in this auction is an unique styled axe. The blade is handmade from pounded iron. The blade is slightly pitted and shows no signs of restoration. The handle is made of wood. The handle has been carved into the face of a man on the end. The workmanship on the carving suggests ceremonial usage. This axe came from the estate of a collector who lived in the Shaba region of Zaire/Congo in the early 1950s. But traveled all over Africa. His parents lived in the Belgian Congo before that time. The axe appears to be quite old, but I do not know its actual age. There are several tribes in the Congo which are known to be iron-workers, but I do not know which one made this interesting piece. The axe is 12 inches long and the blade is 7 inches. African Songye Axe

The Congo Collection: African Antique - Hemba War Axe - Zaire - Africa
This is a nice old well-patinated Hemba axe which measures 15 inches in length x 10.5 inches wide. I picked this up in the Democratic Republic of Congo several years ago. It is approximately 35 to 40 years of age(the wood aspect) While the inserted metal blade- also quite old- may not be the original to the anthropomorphically-finialed handle. Please note from the last pic, that the honed, terminal-end of the blade-head perforates the cross-hatched end of the haft through a hole which exits the obverse side in an asymmetrical position. The color derived from the patination gives the axe handle a beautiful and radiant appearance. The anthropomorphic cranium finial is very well-executed. This is a very nice piece for those who collect tribal blades. Weapons, spears, lances, daggers and the like. The field of Sahara Neolithic Artifacts was expanded by the advent of GPS technology for meteorite hunters in the Sahara Desert. Thousands of years ago North Africa was a temperate environment similar to our own Great Plains. Countless generations of Stone-Age Man lived. WONDERFUL CARVED WOODEN AFRICAN SCULPTURE EARLY TO MID 20TH CENTURY EXCELLENT CONDITION NO RESERVE About 13" x 6 1/2" DESCRIPTION Baoule(Baule) ceremonial axe or hatchet. Human form. With the wrought iron blade protruding from a man's mouth. Three-dimensional lizard crawls along the handle. The Baoulé(or Baule) are an Akan people and one of the largest groups in the Ivory Coast. The Baoulé are farmers who live in the eastern side of Côte dIvoire. The Baoule people are represented by religion. Art, festivals, and equal society. There are more than sixty-five different Akan-speaking ethnic groups living in Cote d'Ivoire. They live essentially in the middle of the Cote d'Ivoire between the Comoé ... moreRiver and the Bandama River. They played a role during 20th century history. Legend goes that in the 17th century the Baoulé left present day Ghana and traveled west into present day Côte dIvoire under the lead of the Queen Pokou. According to oral tradition, the Baoulé were forced to leave Ghana when the Ashanti rose to power. While they were fleeing for their lives they came to a large river that they were unable to cross. With their enemies chasing them they began to throw their most prized possessions into the river. It came to the Queen's attention that their most valuable possession was her son. The Queen realized that she had to sacrifice her son to the river and threw him in. Upon doing so hippopotamuses rose from the river and allowed them to cross, saving their lives. After crossing, the Queen was so upset about losing her son that all she could say was"baouli, meaning: the child is dead. From that point on they were known as the Baoulé. ANTIQUE AFRICAN BATTLE AXE
This is a genuine antique battle axe dating to the 19th century and period of the slave trade. It is wood. 16” in length with an iron blade mounted transversely. That allowed it to be imbedded in the victim and twisted to create a horrible fatal wound, It also allowed the slaver to hook the arm or neck of a victim and capture him. Then inside of the blade is chiseled with a fertility symbol. Most African axes on the market today are fairly modern and made to carry as dress accessories or even made for the tourist trade. This is a genuine working weapon from the slave trade and shows considerable use in that pursuit. Condition is as shown.

Hunted, fought and died there, leaving behind their weapons and tools. Today, North Africa consists largely of the Sahara Desert, an inhospitable area almost the size of the United States. Constantly shifting sands and the ability to now safely travel off of established trade routes have expanded this fascinating field of study by making these artifacts available to scholars and collectors around the world.

OLD ANTIQUE SOUTH AFRICAN AXE NO SWORD
Nice old antique South African axe which shows a lot of age and character. The handle is wood. With a lovely glossy patina that has some hard use. There are some chips and splits to the wood and the wood has broken away where the axe handle goes into the head. This happened a long time ago as the wood revealed from the break shows some patina. This causes the head to not remain in the head of the shaft. The steel axe head has a wonderful dark patina. A nice African axe being offered at a very low opening price. ANTIQUE AFRICAN OROMO LEATHER TRIBAL SHIELD ETHIOPIA WEAPON SPEAR SWORD AXE
GJPaw Auctions is pleased to offer a superior selection of antiques and artifacts with ALL AT NO RESERVE! Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE GJPaw Auctions is pleased to present an authentic Oromo War Shield. Made of thick buffalo hide. The piece is beautifully embossed/tooled with geometrical designs. The shield has a rolled edge and a superb patina from age and use, including one area that clearly protected its user from a mighty blow. The hide is a blackish brown-colored heavy weight hide featuring concentric rings around the protruding wooden cone or nipple; embellished with interlocking triangular designs in four evenly spaced rings. Presumably in representation of the four cardinal directions. A thickly padded leather grip, likely a type of antelope skin, is firmly anchored with heavy leather laces. Special Oromo craftsmen. ... moreKnown as chawa, manufactured these shields from raw materials they obtained from their outcast hunter and potter caste(wata or awada) who lived on the shores of Lake Zwai and subsisted mainly on hunting water buffalo and hippopotamus. The Ethiopians are not tribal but break down into social groups, with the Amhara being the leaders and the Galla representing the populace. There are disagreements among scholars about which groups actually created these shields, but there can be no denying the beauty of the form, design and condition of this outstanding example. The piece measures 21 inches across by 7 inches deep(53.34 cm by 17.18 cm) It was likely used in the war between Italy and Ethiopia. Which occurred from 1895-1896. It comes from a collection of weaponry containing many relics from this conflict. It would make a fabulous addition to any weaponry collection and also displays well as a"modern" art form on the wall. These pieces are now hard to find and increasingly sought after by collectors of African art, weapons collectors, and the professional design community. It would also make the perfect display companion to the large ceremonial battle axe we are also off

Marka or Malinke Adze Axe Mali West African SALE Was $135
Title, Marka or Malinke Adze Mali West African Type of Object, adze, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Marka. Malinke, Materials, wood. Aluminum or tin, nails, forged iron, Approximate Age, Mid 20th century, Dimensions, 16 inches H. x 8 inches(blade) Overall Condition, good, Damage/Repair, some oxidation on metal. Cut metal decoration, chips and wear in wood, Additional Information: A well designed Adze decorated with aluminum(or tin) sheets probably from the Marka or Malinke. The Marka style is recognized by the use of metal sheets as decorations. This recalls many works from the Marka people. Wonderful utilitarian tools in this form are used throughout Sub-Saharan Africa-and for that matter in many non-African countries as well. Wherever there are masking and sculptural traditions that predate colonial invasions these adzes are found. This ... moreadze. Which measures about 16 inches, has a fairly wide blade and would have been used in the early stages of a carving to roughly shape or hollow out the wood. Subsequently adzes with more narrow and sharper blades would be used to refine the shapes so beloved by collectors. To look at a magnificent old African woodcarving and think that the only tools used were these crude but effective hand-wrought adzes can only add to the awe which these works inspire in us. And the adzes themselves, like this one, are often works of art which rival the carvings they produced. They are used as insignia of power by chiefs, dignitaries and cult priests. 72250* All content. A Wonderful 19th Century Zulu African Tribal Art Warrior Axe Ethnographia
A Wonderful 19 th Century Zulu African Tribal Warrior Axe I have owned this axe for some time and had the item identified by Christies a few years ago as being mid to late 19 th century and of Zulu origin. The shaft is bound in copper and brass wire and has built up a good patina over the years. The brass and copper wire is slightly loose and has become a little sharp in parts but nothing major. The base of the shaft may have been slightly cut but other than that it is in good condition. The blade is held in place with a piece of metal bent over at the other side. I think this is made this way so it could also be used as a club. The blade is slightly loose but is secure. The blade is no longer as sharp as what is once was and has started to discolour and build up a strong patina. I am unsure if this would have been a ceremonial item or an ... moreactual fighting weapon. The length of the axe is approximately 57cm long. From where the metal holds the blade in place at the back to the front cutting edge of the blade the width is approximately 13cm. This Can Be Shipped Worldwide. Low Start And No Reserve. Rare Opportunity. The Item Is Sold Exactly As Shown In The Photographs Any Questions Please Ask I’d Be Happy To Help. More Photographs Available On Request. Please Read My Returns Policy Before Bidding. POSTAGE COSTS: Please be aware that Royal Mail has recently yet again increased their prices so as a result I am having to increase my postage costs. I have to post all items via a recorded service to comply with ebay’s buyer protection policy. Please take this into consideration when leaving feedback. I charge a little over the cost of postage for packaging materials but that is all. Please check the label when your parcel arrives to compare the postage costs I have charged and what Royal Mail have charged. If I have overcharged or you believe you have been overcharged please message me before leaving feedback or detailed seller ratings and I’ll be happy to discuss a refund. Many Thanks and happy bidding

Rare & Unusual African Executioners Axe / Sword Nagala Tribe No Reserve
Here we have one wild looking piece. It is an Executioners Axe of the Nagala Tribe of Central Africa. It is documented in the excellent book" African Weapons" by Werner Fischer and Manfred A. Zirngibl pages 108 to 111. The hilt is carved wood with brass and copper ribbons wound around the grip these are dark from age. There are some chips to the ridges from use and age. The blade is hand-forged with incised designs. This was used in a unique form of execution. See photo. Besides their use this piece is a beautiful work of African Art.
