Title, Baule Cast Bronze/ Brass Female Figure Carrying Staff Type of Object, Brass female figure, Country of Origin, Cote d'Ivoire, People, Baule, ... moreMaterials, Bronze or brass, Approximate Age, Unknown, Dimensions, Height is 18.5 inches. Overall Condition, Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. The female figure is portrayed as a chief holding a staff in eacht hand. The details of her headdress. Jewelry, scarification and seated posture all attest to her being a royal or a lineage head. Fine modeling of her face is done with a realism not often found in African art. The seated position is an indicator of rank and status in this world and in the spirit world. The elaborate markings on their bodies front and back and their faces allied to the complexity and detail of the hair enhances their presentation as personages of rank and social status. She wears armlets and anklets. Facial features and hair are especially detailed. The finely balanced casting of the figures and the well-finished surface all reflect Baule sensibilities of representation and aesthetics. Bronze figures of this size and detail are as not common and most probably served to represent ancestors or we

The Kota revere the relics of ancestors. Ancestor worship formed the core of the family group’s religious and social life. At the death of a chief. The ... moreinitiates would take from the body of the deceased various relics, which were then decorated with metal and rubbed with powders of multiple magical powers. The Kota have produced large quantity of statues of ancestors with the diamond-shaped lower part called mbulu-ngulu; these rather two-dimensional sculptures are in wood; symbolic metals were applied to the upper part in strips or sheets to add power. Copper in particular was identified with longevity and power. These statues stood guard in cylindrical bark boxes. On baskets or bundles called bwete that contained the skulls and bones of important ancestors. Bound into a packet and lashed to the base of a carved figure. The bones formed a stable base that allowed the image to stand more or less upright. Thanks to the diversity of the groups, scattered over a vast area, a great variety of different styles of figures has developed, some of them endogenous and some influenced by neighboring styles. Kota figures represent an extremely stylized human body. Reduced to shoulders and“arms, in emptied lozenge shape, surmounted by a large face framed by an ample coiffure with hanging tresses. The face, always oval, may be concave(female) convex(male) or concave-convex, with a forehead in quarter-sphere(also male) The reliquaries were kept outside the homes, in huts at the edge of the village. Only the initiates of the lineage had access to this sacred place. At the time of initiation in the reliquary cult, the clans would meet to perform communal rituals; each clan’s chief would dance holding the reliquary. Some reliquaries featured a large figure representing the lineage founder along with some smaller figures representing his successors. There are figures with two identical or different faces made on two opposite sides of the flat head. Secured on a wooden base. Measurements: 22" in height by 10 1/2" at width.

Dogon Standing Female Figure Nommo Mali African SALE Was $210
Title, Dogon Standing Female Figure Nommo Mali African Type of Object, figure, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, wood. pigment, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, 15 inches H. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, general wear. Chips, Additional Information: A standing Female Figure lifting her breasts. The figure is wearing a carved labret under her chin. This well-used female figure comes from the Dogon of Mali. Known for their art as well as where they live along the heights of the Bandiagara escarpment Dogon art remains today some of the best known and collected African art. This female figure is a prime example of classic Dogon sculpture that represents a tradition of carving rarely surpassed for longevity or imagination for Dogon art extends to the past as early as the 12th century and continues ... moreto be created in the present. The figure stands with legs slightly bowed on a rounded base with her arms along her sides carved so that they hang free with her hands on her abdomen. The herniated naval is a commonly illness seen on both men and women in the region. Her exaggerated thighs and buttocks create a parallel to the shape of the breasts and shoulders extending out of the back. The figure may represent an ancestor or equally a Nummo. One of the eight primordial figures created by God. She may have been placed on a family altar or kept in the village priest s shrine where she would have offerings made upon her to infuse her with life force to assist humans on earth and to intercede with the deities. The offerings made over time have eroded and roughened the surface giving it an ageless presence. This is a classic Dogon sculpture and would be a prime piece in a collection as it reflects all the creativity and sculptural imagination of the Dogon sculptor who was the local blacksmith.Griaule, M. Among ... morethe Azande(Zande) figures like this are known as Yanda, served to represent ancestral or protective spirits who looked over the members of an Azande cult known as Mani(This cult was also shared by close neighbors the Mangbetu) Figures either carved of wood or shaped out of clay were used by senior male members of Mani, known as Bandakpa, to cure illnesses, forestall spells or to cast spells or attach a witch to an enemy. The Mani cult enrolled women and men and worked to assure health and to secure wealth and prosperity for the cult member. These charming figures takes their color from the magical application of roots. Plants, bark and seeds called Libele by the Azande. Local scarification patterns worn by the people are also carved onto the face and thighs and genitals of the figure. The heads of families form the council of elders, which shares its power with numerous secret societies. These societies exercise great political and social influence. They are highly hierarchical, their members passing from one level to the next. There is strong social pressure toward individual distinction, and men can move upward through successive grades by demonstrating their achievements and their generosity. The lack of overall centralization among the Igbo-speaking peoples has been conducive to the development of a great variety of art styles and cultural practices. Living in small forest communities the Fang focused upon tightly knit kinship and lineage systems and the veneration of ancestors through the use of figurative sculptures. Each lineage's ancestors were located in family shrines where memorials or reliquary boxes known as byeri, containing their bones were under the care of an elder known as the Esa. Containers made of either bark or woven basketry were surmounted by sculpted figures known as eyema-o- byeri that guarded the remains of Fang ancestors(Fernandez 1975: 723-46) When not in actual use the sculpted figures were generally hidden from view

With most of the villages situated on cliffs to the north and the east. According to Dogon oral tradition, the tribe settled in this area between the 14th and the 15th centuries, after escaping from the Mande kingdom. Legend has it that a snake led them to the cliff at the southern end of the plateau, where they overwhelmed and usurped the local Tellem and Niongom populations. The Dogon livelihood is based on agriculture concentrated in fields at the edge of the cliff, where water is scarce, but enough for occasional irrigation. Dogon social and religious organizations are closely interlinked and out of these arose four principal cults which accounts for the richness and diversity of Dogon culture. Dogon art is extremely versatile, although common stylistic characteristics- such as a tendency towards stylization- are apparent on the statues. Dogon figures are predominantly associated with the ancestor cult. They are carved either for personal or family use or, if they commemorate the foundation of a community, are worshipped by the village. The artistic influence of Niongom and Tellem traditions on Dogon statues is apparent. The Niongo

Yoruba Beaded Maternity Group figure - Cosmetic Container African
Beads were signs of wealth and status for the Yoruba people in Nigeria. Many Yoruba sacred and secular objects were embellished with elaborate images and symbolic designs created by small glass beads. Exhibiting a wide diversity in size. Symbolism, intimacy and style, African maternity figures depict the ideals of beauty, fertility, character and action and many signify much more, whether the primordial mother or a legendary founding ancestor. Commonly used as shrine figures, they were often objects of petitions or prayers for fertility and successful births. The prevelance of the maternity theme testifies to the importance of women and children to the continuity of each people. Offered today is a beaded Yoruba maternity group. I was told that this particular maternity figure was most likely a cosmetic holder. As you can see. The lid of the ... morecentral container comes off. Dogon Mask with Carved Figure on Top Mali African
Title, Dogon Mask with Carved Figure on Top Mali African, Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, Wood. Paint, Approximate Age, 20th Century last quarter, Dimensions, Height is 25 inches. Overall Condition, Fair to good, Damage/Repair, broken arm of figure. Chips, shallow cracks, Additional Information: A 20th century mask from Dogon with its stylized human face surmounted by a standing female figure. This figure has its arms upraised in Tellem style(one arm is missing here) It represents an important ancestor. The oral tradition of the Dogon tells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. They moved west at some point. Into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom. This time, ... morearound 1500, they found a place almost unreachable by invaders on horseback-the arid but imposing Bandiagara Cliffs. Here most of the Dogon have remained to this day, as one of Africa's most spiritual people. Dogon family dwellings, as well as their shrines and granaries, are constructed in a uniquely haunting way, leaving even the most jaded observer spellbound, in what can only be described as a"magic kingdom. The Dogon have taken the time-honored worship of ancestors to new heights, and their huge pantheon of astounding and colorful carvings reflect this. It is possible today for tourists and scholars to arrange masked dances for public view, but these dances are for entertainment only, and only a few of the art-forms are actually revealed. Ritually meaningful ceremonies are not shared with the public. The Dogon have even made their funerals a unique spectacle. Accompanied by the chanting of Binu priests, the body is reportedly lowered over the jagged cliffs into its final resting place, as dancers venerate the life of the deceased. Quite a way to enter the heavens! The important PBS series"Africa" did a beautiful segment on the Dogon and Fulani. Recommended

The Mangbetu sculptures symbolize the ideal of male or female beauty. This beauty is translated by the hairstyle and by the geometric patterns and the body painting that are observed on the real individual in their personal appearance. Most of these figures portrayed existing people. The 40.000 Mangbetu are of Sudanese origin. They moved across the border into NE DRC several hundred years ago and live just south of the Zande and west of the Boa-two groups that also moved into the DRC from the Sudan. The Mangbetu are famous mostly for their clay mugs and musical instruments, with statues and other objects being rare. Most of their figural art is distinctive for the elongated heads-which is probably an influence from the ancient Egyptians that filtered south into the Sudan thousands of years ago. Mangbetu art is a royal art, so most objects that exist are elegant, refined, and of great beauty. For more information see Enid Schildkrout and Curtis A. Keim. All other details on this carving recall a Baule style. An interested piece showing some age with traces ... moreof use! Baule sculptures fall into two categories. The first represents the wild spirits(asie usu) that live in the bush beyond village boundaries and the second category are the figures that represent‘spirit world’ spouses for their owners. Though representing bush spirits the asie usu are shown as wild spirits in beautiful bodies. These figures were used by trance diviners known as komien and were kept in a shrine in the diviner’s house where the spirit of the bush could inhabit or metaphorically‘sit’ on the figure. In addition to the idealized beauty of this figure other shrine objects are not carved and may be simple daubs of clay or pans filled with magical substances or roughly shaped figures. In its ritual context, the figure would be covered with white pigment representing other worldliness or spirituality. Diviners will perform in public where the spirit will possess them or will advise clients in private close by their shrine. Attention is focused upon the head with emphasis given to the well-carved details of the face with arched eyebrows. Rounded forehead and well-shaped mouth. The figure is holding a well-carved stool with diamond and other patterns simil

On both sides of the Niger River the Igbo number some ten million individuals. Mainly farmers and merchants, they also hunt and fish. The earliest sculpture known from Igboland is from the village of Ibo Ukwu. Where the grave of a man of distinction and a ritual store, dating from the 9th century AD, contained both chased copper objects and elaborate castings of leaded bronze. Ibo sculpture is subject to rather strict rules: the figures are generally frontal, symmetrical, and upright, with legs slightly spread, arms held away from the body, and hands stretched forward, palms open. Item# 2088 Provenance: James E Adkins Estate Collection(Florida. USA) This fetish figure(as called in older literature) or powere figure. Is attributed to the Yaka people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is figure that would generally be used by diviners in the healing and protection rituals they held. They were however used by individuals, families and entire villages too in the fight against evil, to destroy or weaken and evil spirits that were present, to help prevent and even cure sickness, to solidify contracts or agrrements between tribes people, and to repel bad deeds. The Yaka are and other African tribes are bound to a strange relationship with power figures. ... moreAs they can be an ally or an enemy. The negatives are, they can be used to invoke illness, to harm or to take revenge by those who have been wronged. They are normally used in this fashion against'witches' or'sorcerers' On a positive note, they are generally used as a form of protection from misfortune, to heal and to bring success. How these figures differ from ancestral figures is that they derive their power from ritual use and the addition of'power or fetish materials' The application and'charging' of the fetish material to the figure is carried out by a specialist, usually the diviner who will then initiate the figure for its intended use. by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! The Congo Collection: Rare African Madagascar Sakalava Figure - Carving - Statue
This is a very rare Standing Malagasy Female Figure from the Sakalava People of Madagascar. The details and dimensions are as follows: Age: Approximately 80 Years- Circa 1935 Origin: Sakalava Peoples of Madagascar. Material: Wood. Dimensions: Height Overall: 35.4 inches. Width at Shoulders: 9.45 inches Width of Head: 8.66 inches. The statue has various age- Environment- and transportation-related defects. Reverse Side- entire left rear quadrant is missing from the hairline to the buttocks. The age-old fracture continues down the left rear of the leg. The break which resulted in the missing rear aspect of the statue is extremely old- it is not a recent break. There is a foot break(Right Front) which resulted from international and trans-oceanic transport two months ago. This is displayed in one of the pictures and is a recent break. Which ... moreI still chide myself for. But no matter how well I think I wrap these pieces for international transport, there seem to be pachyderms in the baggage areas of the airports I frequent. There are also slight age cracks in the back of the head and on the neck in the front. There is a fissure which runs through the center of the statue. Most likely once the core-area of the tree-trunk section- which this figure was carved from. Age cracks, extreme weatherization, breakage and missing extremities are common for Sakalava Figures. This is due to their continuous exposure to the elements: moisture, wind, salt air, and sun. Via the frontal view of this piece. The vertical strip missing from the posterior is not visible. Other than the foot fracture- the statue looks flawless from the front. The wood is extremely hard, very weathered and very heavy. These Sakalava figures in their own fashion remind me of Burmese. Cambodian and Laotian Buddhas- they are very often extremely weathered, with"faded" facial features and missing extremities- which does add to their artistic charm and romantic appeal. The Sakalava figures which are seen on the international market(albeit rarely) are

Superb African Yombe Kongo Maternity Fetish Figure
This is a Yombe carved maternity fetish from what is now the Republic of Kongo. It is outrageously graceful and so beautifully expressive of the ultimate offering of generosity shown through the lifting of a breast. The woman is kneeling and holding one breast up and forward. As if offering milk; in the other hand she is chewing on a medicinal plant. The teeny tiny teeth have been carved to look as though they have been filed into points. Tatoo markings are on all spiritual points on the body. The detail is very articulated and the form itself is very classical. I think it is a very special carving and have enjoyed it enormously and should you purchase it, I doubt you will be disappointed. It is approximately 70 years old. Size: 8.5 x 4 x 3" Hardwood

They fled from the Mossi into southern Mali during the 15th century, settling on a breathtaking but remote plateau, known as the Bandiagara Cliffs. This isolation allowed their art to remain stylistically very pure, and as a result they have become a laboratory of sorts for ethnologists. They are a warm and hospitable people as well, much to the relief of all the scholars and journalists who have intruded upon them. Though they occasionally perform dances for the public, there are a limited number of art forms which they reveal, choosing to keep most of their rituals close to their hearts, and away from the cameras. Dogon beliefs and mythology are so complex that it takes a"griot" up to a week to recite them. Recommended Reading: See Laude's AFRICAN ART OF THE DOGON. 70572* All content.
