The Congo Collection: Rare African Madagascar Sakalava Figure - Carving - Statue
This is a very rare Standing Malagasy Female Figure from the Sakalava People of Madagascar. The details and dimensions are as follows: Age: Approximately 80 Years- Circa 1935 Origin: Sakalava Peoples of Madagascar. Material: Wood. Dimensions: Height Overall: 35.4 inches. Width at Shoulders: 9.45 inches Width of Head: 8.66 inches. The statue has various age- Environment- and transportation-related defects. Reverse Side- entire left rear quadrant is missing from the hairline to the buttocks. The age-old fracture continues down the left rear of the leg. The break which resulted in the missing rear aspect of the statue is extremely old- it is not a recent break. There is a foot break(Right Front) which resulted from international and trans-oceanic transport two months ago. This is displayed in one of the pictures and is a recent break. Which ... moreI still chide myself for. But no matter how well I think I wrap these pieces for international transport, there seem to be pachyderms in the baggage areas of the airports I frequent. There are also slight age cracks in the back of the head and on the neck in the front. There is a fissure which runs through the center of the statue. Most likely once the core-area of the tree-trunk section- which this figure was carved from. Age cracks, extreme weatherization, breakage and missing extremities are common for Sakalava Figures. This is due to their continuous exposure to the elements: moisture, wind, salt air, and sun. Via the frontal view of this piece. The vertical strip missing from the posterior is not visible. Other than the foot fracture- the statue looks flawless from the front. The wood is extremely hard, very weathered and very heavy. These Sakalava figures in their own fashion remind me of Burmese. Cambodian and Laotian Buddhas- they are very often extremely weathered, with"faded" facial features and missing extremities- which does add to their artistic charm and romantic appeal. African? Dogon? Wood Fertility Statue
I believe this may be a African dogon or similar statue. Definitely not anything modern. It stands about 4 ft tall. It has some cracking in the wood due to age. One of the arms is missing. Has a metal piece that looks like was used to brace the arm price which is missing. By the looks of it. I believe it has been missing for a long time. One of the arms(or both) may have been re-attached with glue or some type of adhesive. I am unsure. Looks like parts of the beard were chipped off somehow. Still a very nice piece that needs some TLC. Sold as is.

Deco 1930's-50's Tall African Man Warrior Statue w Spear Ceramic Hagenauer Up for auction is a fabulous. Tall statue of a seated African Man or Warrior holding a metal spear. He measures 11 inches tall to the top of his head and the spear is another 4 inches above that. He is very similar in style to a Hagenauer Bronze. He has a grass skirt or loincloth(similar to Hagenauer as well) He is made of ceramic or terra cotta and painted semi matte black with ruby gloss lips. The piece is stamped on the bottom with numbers(2302) and a mark that looks like a C. Sadly he is cracked in 2 places- one on the leg and one where he holds the spear- this has been glued and could probably be improved upon with a little paint rubbed into the crack. This is an African Type statue. I am not sure where it is from. It is made of the heavy. Dense brown wood that is at least similar to many African statues are made of. I inherited this from my dad and know very little about it. A unique face and head-dress on a delicate neck and sturdy base! I can see that it is carved wood(don't know what kind) and is stained a dark color. It has an African style face and head-dress. I don't know if it was made in Africa. It looks old because it shows some wear and tear like rubbed areas and what seems to be 2 chips off back edge of the head-dress. I'm not sure if this could have been there when it was made. I think this would look real nice if it were refinished. Of course the wear it shows does add a special antique look. There does seem to be a hairline crack down the side of the nose to the chin and up the forehead.see photos) This could have been there too from the wood itself. FRANKEL ESTATE FIND ANTIQUE RARE BAMBARA AFRICAN MALE STATUE WITH GREAT PATINA This antique African male statue is probably circa late 1800's from an old collection of the Frankel estate of New York city. Mr Frankel was a notable collector of fine antiquities. In my opinion I believe this statue was carved in this manner and do not think the legs and base to be damaged. The patina is authentic but there is some small chips on the right arm. Both legs and the groin area. The height is approximately 13.75" There is an antique nail protruding from the right side of the statue's neck that was there when we obtained this piece. There is a metal square tube going through the the bottom, not sure why. It looks old. The wood feels very smooth. Statue: 11.25" high at highest point. 4.5" wide at widest point. The Yoruba people are the largest nation in the Africa with an art producing tradition. Most of them live in Southwest Nigeria. With considerable communities further West in the Republic of Benin and in Togo. Human figures are represented in a fundamentally naturalistic way except for bulging eyes, flat protruding and usually parallel lips and stylized ears. Now two third of the Yoruba are farmers. Even if they live in the city. They keep a hut close to the fields, they grow corn, beans, cassava, yams, peanuts, coffee and bananas. Very good and excellent condition.
