Old and fine wood African Hemba mask. Carved in very hard and heavy wood, good volume) and with a very nice encrusted sacrificial patina. Mid 20th Century. ... moreI love the presence and the"evocation" of this piece. A wooden face mask with a pointed forehead. Eyebrows in relief, circular ears, open eyes, a chimpanzee-like nose, an arched narrow opening in place of mouth. These traits identify this mask t the Chimpanzee. And monkey masks like this are a common theme among the Hemba people who live west of Lake Tanganyika and east of the River Zaire. Their sculpture has often been mistakenly identified to the Luba who are their larger neighbors. This monkey faced mask is worn not on the face but at the waist at the belt line. It is known among the Hemba simply as(Mwisi Gwa So'o, ibombo ya soho" or"Soko Muntu" which means'monkey mask" The masks Ibombo ya soho represent the idea of death when they are danced at funerals. The exaggerated features of the Soho mask represents a creature of the bush that is half human and half monkey. It is a being that can be either dangerous or helpful. The personification of this being depicts the potential of nature and the need to control its excesses through the dancing of the men’s society Ibombo ya Soho masks. These masks are not very large and upon occasions are worn at dancer’s waists or kept in the house to protect the household from malevolent forces. The Hemba monkey mask reflects the ability of the African artist to characterize the idea of life and death in brooding sculptural form. As well as the dancer’s ability to impart the lessons of living within a rationally structured society. Height: 33 cm. 13 in. Stand not included Read Before Bidding I am not a shop dealer. Antique piece of Hemba mask of Congo art sculpture"12x"6 The mask designed in a native hardwood. Presents an abstract human face with a slim, narrow, grin that takes up half the facial circumference. A sleek exaggerated tapering nose which sets between two small slanted eyes highlighted by tribal scarification underneath completes the simplistic composition. The Hemba see the serenely closed eyes as a reflection the ancestor’s interior calm and the grin as a reflection of satisfaction and power. This mask has spent decades on at least two continents, the patina attesting the age and extensive use.

And elsewhere, use art to meet the contingencies of everyday life through the activities of the local priest or diviner known as the Nganga. These individuals of great spiritual strength and inductive abilities use the rituals, secret formulae and sculptures to heal and prevent the activities of malevolent forces. Sculpture like this are known as Nkishi and often serve to divine the future, control one s destiny, and forestall evil-doers or to work magic and most importantly to gain the attention of the spirit world. RARE 1930s? Horned Hemba African woman figure, no reserve
H orned figures(male or female) are very rare in Hemba art and the exact meaning is unclear. This is a wonderful example with serene eyes and a protruding tongue and belly. The figure is quite sturdy despite the loss on the back of the base. The artistic style of the Hemba is very similar to that of the Luba. As many of their forms are borrowed. Art often results from the elaboration of otherwise simple utilitarian objects. Extensive wooden sculptures, which often represent the ancestors, predominate. Near the end of the 16th century. The Hemba began their migration from an area to the northeast, probably modern day Tanzania. In the 1800s under the direction of Niembo and his son, Myhiya, the Hemba moved into their current location along the Congo(Zaire) River. The Luba unsuccessfully tried to incorporate the Southern Hemba into their growing ... morekingdom. The Luba did succeed, however, in greatly influencing the Hemba in numerous ways, including artistic styles. In the late 19th century, the Hemba were subjugated to raids by Arab slave traders and again by Belgian forces during colonization. In southeast DRC. The 90,000 Hemba people inhabit the right bank of the Lualaba River. This region presents vast plains surrounded by high hills and bordered by streams, rocks, and marshes. They are primarily subsistence agriculturalists whose main staples include manioc, maize, peanuts, beans and yams. These crops are supplemented by small scale hunting and fishing done mostly by the men. Some alluvial copper is panned from the river and sold to outside markets. Their social organization is founded on a system of clans that brings together several families sharing a common ancestor. They recognize a creator god Vidiye Mukulu and a supreme being ShimuGabo. The Hemba practice ancestor worship. Not only to keep the memory of their great chiefs alive, but also to justify the present authority and power of the chief of the clan; the latter has absolute authority over clan members and is in charge of several ancestor figures he ke

They were kept in special houses or in the house of the clan leader, Fumu Mwalo" Fumu Mwalo" would consult these ancestor figures, and also make offerings and sacrifices to them some important decision is to be made or every time the community needs ancestors help. The warm colored patina comes as a result of extended us through offerings and touching. Singiti figures serve as intercessors between the living and the dead and as effigies of ancestor to recognize lineage heads and document title to land. Singiti figures are not strictly considered to be portraits of particular individuals. They depict rank, social status and ethnic identity
The Congo Collection: 2 old Hemba Tribal Mask Masks from Zaire - African Carving
I personally acquired both of these masks in the SE Democratic Republic of Congo. Directly to the West of Lake Tanganika last year. Mask 1 The small. Sweet smiling round mask measures approximately 6.4 inches in diameter, is at least 35 years old, and does not display much wear from use or handling. But it does have decent age. It sat on the back of a shelf for many years, caked with dust, before I had some one pull it out to show me. There is a small chip in the proximity of the left side of the mouth(from the mask's perspective. If you please) The wood is quite dense and heavy and the mask is structurally sound. It possesses both anthropomorphic(humanistic) and zoomorphic(animalistic) features. But most closely resembles a primate or chimpanzee. Mask 2 The second Hemba Mask measures 9.75(L) inches x 7.1(W) inches and is shaped like ... morean inverted-teardrop. It it is about the same age as the round mask. Is a shade lighter and has some fine age cracks running through its surface. This mask is purely anthropomorphic and was picked up in the same locale as the first mask. The combination of these masks together is reminiscent of the Greek Muses which symbolize"Comedy" and"Tragedy. Their like complexion and other similarities also make them a suitable pair for a special space on the wall. These masks are from present day Democratic Republic of Congo and former Zaire. They would make an awesome addition to ones collection. Standard or Economy Shipping w/in Continental US for a $20 Flat Rate. Luba-Hemba Male Figure Holding Bowl DR Congo African Miniature
Title, Luba-Hemba Male Figure Holding Bowl Bearer DR Congo African Miniature, Type of Object, carving. Figure, Country of Origin, Democratic Republic of Congo, People, Luba-Hemba, Materials, Wood Approximate Age, 20th Century, Dimensions, Height is 11 inches, Overall Condition, good, Damage/Repair, crack in base, Additional Information: This standing male figure holding a bowl comes from the Luba-Hemba people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The figure recalls the famous bowl bearers from the Luba-Hemba. But the theme of bearer with bowl is common to the Luba and related peoples such as the Zela and Songye. The rerepresentation of male is very rare among the Luba. This could imply the figure was made by a Hemba artist and for use by the Hemba. Among the Hemba such figures are considered representation of ancestors. Among the Luba-Hemba. ... moreThe bearer figure play the role of intermediaries between the living and the Vidye spirits of the spirit world. TThe function of the figure is to call. Beg or implore these spirits to protect, rescue and assist the living. The Vidye spirits speak through the mouth of the bear figure. Through these sculptures the diviner calls for the help and assistance of the Vidye spirits, the divinities of the divinations. Recommended Reading: Francois Neyt. Outstanding, Collectable Hemba Head Rest, DRC
The Hemba practice ancestor worship. Not only to keep the memory of their great chiefs alive, but also to justify the present authority and power of the chief of the clan; the latter has absolute authority over clan members and is in charge of several ancestor figures he keeps in his own hut or in a smaller, funerary hut. The chief of the clan renders justice and his status as clan head means that he has the privilege of receiving numerous gifts. As celebrant of the ancestral cult, the chief of the clan, surrounded by the people, communicates with the ancestor, recalling his great deeds and summoning his good will. He renders justice in his own home, and collects tributes for it. Along with medicine, law, and sacrifices, the ancestral cult penetrates all social, political, and religious domains. To possess numerous effigies is a sign of nobility. ... moreSecret societies such as Bukazanzi for the men and Bukibilo for the women counterbalance the chief of the clan’s power. Diviners play an important role in society. Often requiring that certain ancestors be appeased in order to establish balance in the community. This auction is for a very old headrest. Carved approximately mid to late 1980’s. Measures 6" by 19"

The Congo Collection: 5 African Masks - Zaire - Lulua - Hemba - Lega - Songye
This sale consists of 5 different masks. There are masks from the Songye(possibly 2) Lulua and Hemba ethnic groups plus one mystery mask. Here is the break-down on age and condition. The Red-eyed Lulua Mask measures 12.15 inches in length x 8 inches wide. It has a chip missing from its left ear and several age cracks grace the surface of the piece. There are remnants of 40+ year old insect damage. Mask is solid. Heavy, dust and critter free. It is approximately 30 to 50 years old and is may have been used ceremonially. It is the correct size for ceremonial use, and shows signs of extensive wear and handling. The Hemba Mask with Rafia Beard measures approximately 9 inches in length x 8.75 inches wide. This is a very peaceful looking mask. Filled with charisma, which creates its own presence where-ever it hangs. It is approximately 25 to 30 ... moreyears old and was made in S.E. Zaire, about 150 KM west of Lake Tanganyka. The Rafia beard was obviously replaced subsequent to the creation of the mask. The Old Songye Passport Mask with Striated Face measures 10.5 inches in length x 4.4 inches wide. This is a sweet little mask with an awesome presence. It shows signs of extensive wear and handling. This precious piece is at least 35 to 40 years old and has a life of its own. The Passport Primate Fetish Mask I also believe to be Songye- but please correct me if you know differently. It measures 9.85 inches in length x 4.25 inches wide. During transport. A vertical strip broke away from the right side of the mask and had to be re-glued. Hanging on the wall, this is not a noticeable defect but it is evident while being handled. This small fetish mask is made from a rather light wood and is approximately 25 to 30 years old. The Unknown Flat Ovoid Mask from Zaire measures approximately 12 inches in length x 7 inches wide. It is made from a heavy wood and appears to have been made within the past 25 years. This is an amazing representation of a Hemba ancestor. The carving is exquisite. The patina remarkable and the condition excellent showing only one spot on the very bottom with a section missing that might have happened in the carving process and is a natural feature of this particular piece of wood. DIMENSIONS: 26 CM X 53.5 CM(WITHOUT RAFFIA; 109 CM INCLUDING RAFFIA) THIS OBJECT HAS BEEN CHEMICALLY ANALYSED BY THE LABORATORY OF MUSEUM D’ARTE E SCIENZA IN MILAN(http:www.africanartauthenticity.com/index-ita1.htm#Determinazione_dellet%C3%A0_di_oggetti_darte_africana_in_legno) WITH THE FOLLOWING OUTCOMES: TYPE OF WOOD: RICINODENDRON RAUTANENII. AS STATED BY DUNJA HERSAK IN ITS“SONGYE MASKS AND FIGURE SCULPTURES” LONDON: ETHNOGRAPHICA 1985) SONGYE CARVERS OFTEN SELECTED MULELA(RICINODENDRON RAUTANENII) A SOFT WOOD, FOR KIFWEBE MASKS. COLOR, ANCESTRY ASSOCIATIONS, AND PERISHABILITY MAY ALL HAVE BEEN CONSIDERATIONS IN THAT CHOICE. FIRST, IT MAY BE SIGNIFICANT TO THE SELECTION CRITERIA THAT THE WOOD OF THIS ... moreTREE POSSESSES A DISTINCTLY WHITE GROWTH RING SECTION AND A RED SAP-FILLED CENTRAL CORE, THESE BEING THE TWO SIGNALLING COLOURS OF FEMALE AND MALE KIFWEBE RESPECTIVELY. THE SECOND POINT TO NOTE IS THAT THIS SPECIES WAS CITED AS ONE OF THE SERIES OF TREES PLANTED AROUND EPATA(THE CHIEF’S RESIDENCE) POSSIBLY IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE ANCESTORS. IN ADDITION TO MULELA, A FEW OTHER TREES SERVED THE SONGYE AS SOURCES FOR CARVING WOOD. THEY HAD IN COMMON THAT THEY WERE SOFT AND LIGHT IN WEIGHT BUT NOT PARTICULARLY DURABLE. THE IMPLICATION OF THE LATTER CHARACTERISTIC CREATES THE POSSIBILITY THAT WHAT SEEMS AN INHERENT DETRIMENT WAS, IN FACT, A MOTIVATING FACTOR IN THE CHOICE OF THAT WOOD. THEIR LOW DENSITY FACTOR INDICATES THAT THEY ARE ALL WOODS HIGHLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO INSECT ATTACK AND PRONE TO CRACKING AND OTHER DAMAGE. THIS ANATOMICAL PROPERTY OF THE WOODS IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT AMONG SONGYE AS IT SUGGESTS THAT THE MASKS ARE PERISHABLE AND REPLACEABLE OBJECTS. IN A GENERAL SENSE, ONE HAS THE IMPRESSION THAT THE LIFE AND MORTALITY OF THE MASKS COINCIDE METAPHORICALLY WITH THE CHANGING GENERATIONS OF RULERS AND THEIR REGIMES. Damage/Repair, wear. Chips, scratches, shallow cracks, Additional Information: This well used arved Janus figure with bowl in the top comes from the Hemba people who today live on ... morethe savannah in the southeast region of the Democratic of Congo along the Lualaba River. This male and female pair known as Kabeja is owned by the clan head. Fumu Mwela. Kabeja figures were not strictly considered to be portraits as they depicted rank, social status and ethnic identity through stance, hair-style and dress. The warm colored patination and encrustation in small plces come as a result of extended use through offerings and touching and indicate some age and long use. The Hemba are broken into a number of chiefdoms with local styles of carving that share similarities but differ in details of sculpting and in the use of body marking. Among the Hemba there are secret societies called Bukazanzi for men and Bukibilo for the women that serve to balance the power of the clan chief. Therefore this joined sculpture of male and female joined together reflects the balance of power between the clan head and the men and women in Hemba society. These figures are present at clan meetings led by the chief(Fumu Mwela) where the figures received offerings and served as intercessors between the living and the dead and to recognize lineage heads and document title to land. AFRICAN LUBA-HEMBA CALABASH GOURD FETISH SUPERB PATINA SECOND QTR 20TH CENTURY
This old Luba-Hemba Calabash(Gourd) fetish with an attached female figure holding her breasts probably dates to the 2 nd quarter of the 20 th century. Notable elements of this attractive carving include an elongated(Alien”like) head and coiffure/headdress. A protruding navel and raised scarification on the stomach area. The carving has a rich shiny black patina lightening to a reddish brown in the raised areas. The gourd itself has some cracks and has been reattached to the woman’s torso with wire in a rather crude. Makeshift fashion. This is the shape the piece was in when I got it. Perhaps. The future owner can do a better job of retying the gourd to the carving using better materials. The seam between the figure and the gourd would originally have been covered either with decorative fiber or with feathers or both. The carving’s left arm ... morehas been reattached at the wrist and at the shoulder. The face is serene and composed yet very powerful and the squared shoulders radiate strength and womanhood at its most confident. This is a superb piece of African art even with its minor flaws. For your reference. I have included a picture with two related examples from an auction catalogue. SMALL LUBA HEMBA PROTECTIVE FETISH FIGURE ENCRUSTED SACRIFICIAL PATINA
This is a small. Beautifully carved female fetish figure with hands resting on its abdomen in a position of repose. It shows shiny black patina on its raised. Exposed areas including the forehead and breasts while other parts of the body are heavily encrusted with old sacrificial material. The figure’s head has a striated coiffure and is mounted with a gently flaring conical finial for storing fetish material. This miniature’s well-detailed face is probably one of its most alluring features. Small carvings such as this were often carried by individuals to assure their prosperity. Well-being and protection. Such fetishes were prescribed by village healers or diviners to counteract illness or danger. They may also have been kept on premises in order to enhance their owners’ psychic or spiritual powers. It is often more difficult to identify ... morethe tribal origin of a miniature carving simply because its diminutive size tends to lacks a wealth of details which can be used as identification landmarks. When I showed this piece to an African gentleman who appraised tribal art for a living. He suggested that it was the work of Luba or Hemba carver probably dating to the mid-20 th Century. Its height is 8.25” without the base. The base is included in this auction. The Congo Collection: Hemba War Axe - Weapon - Spear - Knife - Zaire - Africa
This is a nice old well-patinated Hemba axe which measures 15 inches in length x 10.5 inches wide. I picked this up in the Democratic Republic of Congo several years ago. It is approximately 35 to 40 years of age(the wood aspect) While the inserted metal blade- also quite old- may not be the original to the anthropomorphically-finialed handle. Please note from the last pic, that the honed, terminal-end of the blade-head perforates the cross-hatched end of the haft through a hole which exits the obverse side in an asymmetrical position. The color derived from the patination gives the axe handle a beautiful and radiant appearance. The anthropomorphic cranium finial is very well-executed. This is a very nice piece for those who collect tribal blades. Weapons, spears, lances, daggers and the like. The arts of the two cultures have often been confused, but during the last 30 years a scholastic distinction between them has emerged. The veneration of ancestors is vital to the social lives of the Hemba, and they excel in the creation of male statues known as singiti. These sacred statues are housed in their own special huts, and carefully guarded by chiefs and elders. Their worship not only insures the legacy of the ancestor, but validates the power of the chief who owns it. The more statues he owns, the more respect he commands. It is common to find Luba elements in Hemba carvings as they have been influenced greatly by them. The way the hands lie on the stomach reflect some Songye influence as well. The Hemba number around 100.000 and are subsistence farmers, living primarily on manioc, maize, peanuts and yams. They supplement their diet with a limited amount of hunting and fishing. There are small alluvial deposits of copper in the Congo River, and the Hemba pan for this copper and sell what they find at market.
