An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION The Yoruba people are the largest art producing ethnic group in Africa. And are renowned for their ... morecopious forms of artwork. A largely agrarian society, the Yoruba are distributed throughout Nigeria, Togo, and Benin, and number in the range of 12 million people. Their artistic interpretations of people are generally rendered in a realistic style, minus the exaggerated facial features, in contrast with many other African tribes which produce highly stylized, even surrealistic or impressionistic representations of the human form. A highly popular art-producing group among collectors, the Yoruba are known for their numerous and elaborate art forms as much as for their history of human sacrifice. The Yoruba culture is subdivided into a number of cults. Each identified by particular thing it holds sacred. This mask originates from the Gelede cult, which focuses its attention on the power of elderly women. During Gelede festivities helmet masks such as these are worn on or over the head with a raffia costume, and danced in reverence and celebration. On the'cheeks' of the face are large identifying scarification marks. It still has most of its original pigment, including white(kaolin) green, etc. Color of the pigment is faded in some areas, but still represented strongly for the most part, and the piece stands well on its own without support. Wear and age marks are in evidence as is common, including minor age cracking, rub marks, etc. but the piece does not appear to have undergone any serious breaks or repairs. This is a beautiful, prominent, eye catching standalone piece, and a highly coveted artform from the Yoruba culture! This piece measures in at 10.5" x 10.5" x 11" With a weight of three and a half pounds. MEDIUM: Wood. Pigment NOTHING we sell at African Tribal Creations is made in China. Yoruban Nigerian Beaded Diviners Belt - Ocha - Ifa - Santeria - Image of Shango
This is fantastic beaded Yoruban Divination Belt which has been in my collection for nearly twenty years. It measures 53.5 inches if the hanging loop is included in the overall length. The belt is in excellent condition for its age. There are two cowrie shells missing from the border and the reverse side of the belt has some age-related staining which does not affect its presentation when it is hanging on the wall. The material which the beads are sewn onto is partially constructed from the local aso-oke textile particular to Nigeria Cowrie Shells were used as a form of currency in West Africa and are still used for divination rituals through-out Bantu-speaking Africa even today. They are referred to as"Buzios" in Portuguese and"Simbi" in Kiswahili. For adherents of Vou Dou. Santeria, Regla de Ifa, Regla de Lucumi, Regla ... morede Ocha, Palo Mayombe/Monte and Candomble this is an especially nice piece. The belt depicts the double-headed axe, particular to Shango, protruding through the head of a ritual participant. To"translate" the picture. One could say that the participant depicted in the picture has had the energy of Ṣàngó or Shango(also Xango or Chango) seated or placed in his head. When the ritual participants have Orishas(Orixas or Orichas) or Loas(Lwas) seated in their head(i.e. possession) they adopt the characteristics and attributes of that specific Orisha. Thus they will dance. Move and behave like that African Deity. Shango is one of the most popular of the Orishas of the Afro-Christian world and is most frequently syncretized with Santa Barbara in Cuba. This unique Yoruban-style Divination belt is approximately 30 years old- it is not a new or recently manufactured item. The belt is quite heavy for its size. Provenance: From the personal Collection of Elizabeth Bennett and Sara F. Luther. Exhibited at the South Dakota Art Museum Published in the catalog: Daniel Mato. PhD. Chelsea Cooksey, YORUBA: AN ART OF LIFE. The Bennett-Luther Collection Africa Direct, Denver, Colorado, 2004, fig.22, p. 36. Additional Information: Drums provide important rhythmical background for ceremonies for Shango. The Yoruba god of thunder. Animal hide is tightly wrapped over the top and bottom of the tapered hollow wood cylinder, and held in place with strips of hide. Each drum produces a different tone. It is noteworthy that this accords with the tonal language of the Yoruba, in which a word may have different meanings based upon the tone or pitch used as the word is spoken. Through changes in rhythm, pitch and tone, the drums literally sing the praises of Shango and demarcate different phases in the rituals. Through extraordinary skill and musicianship master drummers can make the drums speak as they both inform and entertain the devotees of Shango. Daniel Mato, PhD. Yoruba Shango Dance Wand, Staff, Yorouba, Nigeria, African Tribal Creations, art
An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION! Normal.dotm 0 0 1 131 751 Full Sail 6 1 922 12.0 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false This NO RESERVE auction is for a Yoruba Shango Dance Wand. These wands are intended as an object to be carried by worshippers loyal to the god Shango. Especially during celebrations that champion him, and are considered one of the most important pieces of art in the Shango cult. In the canon of Yoruba mythology, Shango, or Sango, was once a mortal king, and an ancestor of the Yoruba people. He was considered to be an extremely powerful, and often violent ruler, capable of producing thunder and lightening. This power, however, eventually resulted in his death, which came through the accidental destruction of his own palace with lightning. His followers believed that after his death. He became a ... moredeity. Wands or staffs such as these typically depict a follower of Shango. The colors red and white, sacred to Shango, often embellish the carving and are procured from natural pigments. This piece features the common kneeling female worshipper theme. Beautifully pigmented on a short, stout handle. This figure bears the traditional headdress of the Shango cult, a double-bit axe, which is large and prominent on this piece. The woman is depicted in full garb, with a cloth representatively carved over her shoulders, and resting in her hands. The wand also utilizes kaolin(white) and red pigments. Scarifications are clearly represented on the face in the carving. A fair amount of pigment, though faded, still remains on the piece, and its condition is quite good, and its patina is quite heavily encrusted. The piece does display typical age and wear related marks, including minor cracking, dings, scratches, etc, but nothing out of the ordinary. It will surely please this auction's winner! An interesting fact: Shango is the god of thunder and lightning. Fittingly. The territory the Yoruba occupy experiences one of the highest incidences of thunderstorms in the world, second only to

Wands often depict a kneeling woman as supplicant or, as in this magnificent example, a woman holds or lifts her breasts in a gesture of offering. Sculpted in relief, are used in special festivals and processions, followers of Shango, the Yoruba god of thunder, carry dance wands, called oshe shango, depicting a female devotee with Shango's symbol, the double-headed axe. Shango is thought to control the great powers of nature as one of the orisha, or gods. Shango. Who controls thunder, is associated with the expansion of the Oyo empire in western Yorubaland. The historical personage Shango was a descendant of Oranmiyan and the tyrannical fourth king of Oyo. Oral traditions maintain that he was despot, coerced into surrendering his crown and committing suicide. His supporters denied his death and declared that he ... morehad become a god, merged with the forces of thunder and lightning, which they call down on their enemies. The Shango legend illustrates a significant aspect of Yoruba orisha: they are not idealized. Shango was a sacred king but he can still be presented as a remorseless despot whose need for control overstepped the boundries suitable to political authority. In his attempt to control mystical and magical powers. He was unable to master them, and was eventually controlled by them. Once a mortal, Shango did not die, but he commands great powers of nature as an orisha. In dreadful storms he hurls flashes of lightning upon those who do not respect him. These thunderbolts take the form of ancient stone axes that are exposed on the surface of the earth after heavy rains. by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! Chango / Shango / Xango Blessed Ojo De Buey Pendant -Santeria / Ifa -
As a devoted Santera for 21yrs. I have been a practitioner of my religion for over two decades. I have studied. Mastered, and dedicated my life to helping those in need with the help and power of the Orishas. Thanks to this I have the experience to get the results you desire. Whether it be health. Money, love, change, or power, you will receive exactly what you seek. This is an Ojo de Buey Pendant that has been blessed with the sacred waters of Chango. It has a peony seed. A silver plated elephant and a silver plated four leaf clover. Changó(Shangó) is the owner of fire. Lightening, thunder, and war, but he is also the patron of music, drumming, and dancing. He represents male beauty and virility, passion and power. He's synchronized with Santa Barbara because she's portrayed in Catholic lore as a fiercely independent and ... morebrave young woman. Dressed usually in a red and white costume, holding a sword and wearing a crown like Changó. In a way it's surprising that such a powerful masculine Orichá is synchronized with a female saint, but there are underlying similarities between their stories. Santa Barbara's association with Changó shows that females and males alike can wield Changó's power. Chango is proud. Fierce, brave, a magnificent warrior, intelligent, hardworking and, above all, he likes to be acknowledged as the leader so he doesn't have to take orders from anyone. He knows how to be a good friend. He's a master at divination, and he's a great healer. I've had a great response to my pieces and works on E-bay and invite you to read over my feedback. I hope to continue to help many people like yourself who are in need. Please visit my other listings as I will be listing many powerful pieces. If you are looking for something not listed.
