Dyes, Approximate Age, 20th century, Dimensions, 31 inches x 18 inches, Overall Condition, Poor, Damage/Repair, Stains. Fraying of fibers, stretching, worn surface. Can be steamed or ironed-I have left this up to the buyer. These fascinating cloths with their simple abstract markings are made by the Mbuti people of Congo's Ituri rainforest. Additional information: The Mbuti people who live in the Ituri rainforest of Northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Formerly Zaire, are one of the few remaining hunter-gatherer cultures in the world. Since 3500 BC. They have been famed for their rich and extraordinary arts of music and dancing, but until recently, the barkcloth drawings and paintings made by Mbuti women have been virtually unknown in the West. Originally made as loincloths for ceremonies and dances. These drawings are sophisticated abstract compositions embodying the qualities of improvisation and syncopation that are associated with the African visual and musical sensibility. Overall Condition, Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. Damage/Repair, General wear, Additional Information: This bronze cast pair of figures are interesting and unique in their realism and depiction of traditional ideas in late style castings. The bronze cast figures are uncommon for the Baule however they carry traditional Baule sculptural characteristics presented in a modern idiom. This female figure represents an ancestor or a queen mother based upon a traditional Baule theme of royals. Ancestors, life and fertility. The female figure is portrayed as a chief holding a staff in eacht hand. The details of her headdress. Jewelry, scarification and seated posture all attest to her being a royal or a lineage head. Fine modeling of her face is done with a realism not often found in African art. The seated position is an indicator of rank and status in this world and in the spirit world. The elaborate markings on their bodies front and back and their faces allied to the complexity and detail of the hair enhances their presentation as personages of rank and social status. She wears armlets and anklets. Facial features and hair are especially detailed. The finely balanced casting of the figures and the well-finished surface all reflect Baule sensibilities of representation and aesthetics. Bronze figures of this size and detail are as not common and most probably served to represent ancestors or we

Title, Lwena Mask Red Face Angola DR Congo African Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, DR Congo. Angola, People, Lwena, Materials, wood. Paint cotton ... morecloth, vegetal fibers, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, 9.25 inches H. x 6.25 inches W. 17 inches long with hood, Overall Condition, Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, worn cloth, Additional Information: A finely carved face mask embellished with red and white paints. Its perimeter is surrounded with cotton cloth and plaited vegetal fibers The use of cotton cloth and the red paint are unusual for the Lwena. But the coffee-bean eyes, the pointed nose as well as the fine mouth are of Lwena style. Isolated groups of Lwena have historically settled alongside, and mingled with, villages in the southern DRC, so it is not too surprising to see one of their African masks display sparse Congo minimalism more aligned to the Lega and Lele than the artistically formal Angolan groups, like the Chockwe. This attribution is by no means a given, but the charm and surprising power of this African mask is undeniable. It is a fascinating example of the profound and far-reaching influence of masking traditions from the southern Congo. This mask would add some colors to a collection. The Lwena people. Neighbors of the well-known Chokwe people, share much with the Chokwe in the forms of their art and culture, however Lwena art is less varied consisting primarily of masks and female figures. For example the complex facial markings combine Chokwe patterns with added Lwena variations. 87081* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc. 2006 Add U

Antique MEXICAN Completely Handcarved Wood Walking Stick w Bullfighting Motifs
Rare and unusual antique wood walking stick. Handcarved in Mexico ~ this stick was purchased in Mexico by my grandfather in the late 40's, he was told then it was an antique. It probably was made 100+ yrs ago, around the turn of the century. Measures 35" long, the handle portion being 2 1/2" across. The stick is smooth and well-worn overall and has a wonderful patina to it. There are 4 carved pictorial panels ~ top panel shows the Mexican national symbol of the eagle holding the snake in its mouth, perched on a prickly pear cactus which is atop a patriotic cloth banner, held with a large tassel on reverse ~ the other 3 panels depict different bullfighting scenes, each with the matador and bull in realistic situations. All of the panels are"framed" the frames and other details, such as the matadors' capes, have ... morebeen stained red and green, the green having faded quite a bit. The raised figures and the background are contrasting black/tan swirled areas done with a pyrographic(burning) technique, giving the areas a wonderful jaguar fur-like coloring! This pyro application was done all over the stick first, then being carved, and finally the red and green stain would be applied. Certainly a lot of time and thought went into this process ~ a beautiful piece of antique Mexican folk art, still quite usable today ~ wonderfully decorative too! Will be carefully packaged and promptly sent ~ please email if you would like additional pictures or have any questions. Thank you!
Gorgeous Antique Authentic Mexican Huasteca Water Pot Jug Handmade Pottery
Gorgeous Antique Authentic Mexican Huasteca Water Pot Jug Handmade Pottery Gorgeous Antique Authentic Mexican Huasteca Water Pot Jug Handmade Pottery This beautiful pot from the same collection as the other one we have listed is a very large and outstanding jug. It is an authentic ethnographic piece used by the Huastec indians in Mexico. The Huastec indigenous people live in a region called La Huasteca. Which includes portions of the states of Hidalgo, Veracruz, San Luis Potosi, and Tamaulipas. These pots were typically made in Hidalgo but were sold and used throughout all the Huastec indian communities. Huastecan pots are hand coiled, fired, and then hand painted and re-fired. This pot shows the expected wear and use of a true ethnographic piece. These pieces were not intended as tourist or decorative pottery. Pots like this one are no longer ... moreused since all communities are now able to have bottled water and plastic containers. Few, if any, of these may remain in use. A pot such as this one was used to carry and store clean drinking water. These pots are hard to date but this one may be from the late 19th to the early 20th C. These large pots are sought after by collectors but also make excellent decorative accents for Southwestern decor. This water jug shows the wear. Salt deposits, and erosion characteristic of a used utilitarian artifact, but it is in overall good condition. Provenance: From a private collection. Guaranteed authentic. Dimensions(approx. 9" H and 38" perimeter* Check out our store to see more of our collection of Precolumbian artifacts! PLEASE READ BELOW: This is an antique piece and has some wear and signs of age. MAYAN JAGUAR EFFIGY CUP / SACRED TOTEM, YUCATAN, OUTSIDE CHICHEN-ITZA, 19th C.
MAYAN JAGUAR EFFIGY CUP/ SACRED TOTEM. YUCATAN. OUTSIDE CHICHEN-ITZA, 19th C. Height: 3 1/4" Width: 3 1/2" Thick: 1 3/4" Weight: 4.3 oz The Maya were a curious bunch. For years they were thought to be the peaceful farmer-rulers of the Yucatan. When their stone glyphs were finally deciphered. The true character of these long ago people became clear: they were as brutal. As masochistic, as in love with blood and ceremony as later Indian warrior classes who conquered the peninsula. The Maya had a thing for toxic brews. Many of their shamans regularly ingested pulverized cocktails of plants oils. Beetle carapaces, tree bark scrapings and root slivers to allow them hallucinogenic transport to the spirit world. This artifact is a wonderfully realistic. Clay-fired Sacred Jaguar Totem Cup. It is a beautifully rendered grinning face ... moreof a fierce jaguar. Signaling threat behavior. Several cuts/grooves/chinks seen throughout the piece. Tiny chip along rim of cup and jaguar's ears. White surface discoloration on part of artifact. Such small effigy-covered cups were used to control the ingestion of the semi-toxic brew-witness the small drip hole along one side of the artifact's mouth area. The Jaguar was a powerful predator roaming the jungles of the central America. It appears in all of the cultures and belief systems of pre-Columbian Mesoamerican societies. Quick. Agile, and powerful enough to take down the largest prey in the jungle, the jaguar is the largest of the big cats in the Americas, and one of the most efficient and aggressive predators. Endowed with a spotted coat and well adapted for the jungle hunting either in the trees or water, making it one of the few felines tolerant of water, the jaguar was, and remains, revered among the indigenous Americans who live closely with the jaguar. By the way: the word"jaguar" is a Portuguese corruption of Brazilian Indian words for the big cat( jaguarete. Yaguarete. Jaguatee. Or yaguara. In different Tupi-Guarani languages. The Maya primarily as
Very Rare Antique Native South American Tribal Animal Hide Canoe Boat
Very Rare Antique Native South American Tribal Animal Hide Canoe Boat. Incredibly unusual model of a canoe. Made from dyed animal hide. The whole boat and the figures(everything) is made from hand cut and moulded animal hide. Dyed in all different kinds of colours. The men themselves wear black and red outfits with gold pigment painted on their chests. There are 6 men in total. At the head of the boat is a monkey. Holding what looks like a banana and a ball? There is a multicoloured canopy in the middle of the boat with a large leaf wrapped around it. This must be incredibly rare because I can't find anything similar online after hours of looking. I would say that it dates from circa 1900? It is very dusty and there are some small losses and nibbles throughout. One of the paddles is missing. One paddle has lost it's end. One of the ... moreseats is missing. There are some spare bits(see last photograph) Overall for such a fragile thing. It is in a good strong condition. It leans slightly to one side. Whether this is intentional or not I don't know, but it certainly adds to the movement of the piece, it makes it seem like it is in the water. Hopefully some of you out there will know something of its origin. I'm sorry I can't be more exact! 42cm long x 14cm tall

Kalapalo Indian Mask Brazil Xingo Funai Wood
I have for sale a wood mask by the Kalapalo Indians of the Upper Xingo in Brazil. I bought it at a Funai shop about 25 years ago while traveling in Brazil. The Funai shops are government run craft shops for the indigenous people to be able to sell their work directly to buyers. I think the idea is to eliminate the profit taking of the middle man and the pressure to change their native style. The mask is made from a single piece of wood with hand tied grass skirting. There is an original string for hanging and the original tag is on it. Mask is 13-1/2" tall by 8-1/2" wide. Grass ads 9-1/2" to both top and bottom. At the very bottom of this listing is some information I copied from Wikipedia about the Kalapalo Indians. Go to their site for much more information. I have many additional items for sale. I am willing to combine shipping ... moreas long as I feel everything will arrive safely to you. See other auctions. If you live in the Boston area you are welcome to make an appointment to come by and view this item. You are welcome to pick it up to save on shipping. Otherwise package will be sent from USPS parcel post. zip 01742 Non smoking home. Feel free to ask questions or request additional pictures. History The Kalapalo were the first Xingu tribe to be contacted by the. In 1945. Before the arrival of the Villas Boas, the people had sporadic contact with the white man, so that the name Kalapalo was given to this group by white settlers in the late 19th century. The Cariban dialect of the Kalapalos shows that they have not always lived in the Upper Xingu. The Kalapalo speak a dialect of a language that belongs to the southern branch of the Guyana Carib language family and their closest linguistic relatives are in southern and. Spoken in the area in Brazil and. The Kalapalos and these tribes also share certain oral legends which describe their encounters with the white man and Christian rituals. This oral tradition suggests that the Kalapalos encountered explorer and may have been the last to. These stories

Hand Made South American Red Pottery Animal Figure vessel w/ Spiral
Here is a curious South American pottery animal figurine made from a red low fire clay and entirely hand made with a burnished surface. It measures about 7 inches long. 5& 3/4 inches wide and 4& 3/4 inches high. On the underbelly is a spiral pattern, a familiar motif in indigenous ceramics from south America. This piece is in excellent condition, no damage or repairs. It appears to have been exposed to water on the base, a calcite deposit on the legs. The verdict on this piece is mixed, several antique people believe this is a tourist piece and several others think is might be real antiquity piece. We have to assume this is a 1950s tourist piece. Antiquities South American Pre Columbian style fetish fertility goddess figurine
This was purchased from a tag sale from an elderly couple a few years back. They seemed unclear about where it was from, they both worked for the military and had apparently found it in their travels. From our research we have ascertained that it is South American and in the manner of Pre-Columbian pottery. We are assuming that this is a tourist piece and not a period piece. In any case, it is a hand formed piece made from a red clay and painted with dark lines. It measures 2&b 1/4 inches high and 2& 1/4 inches wide at the feet. The condition is excellent, no damage or repairs. This is an unusual ceramic pottery piece. Items will be shipped USPS Priority Mail. All packages must be insured. We do not charge sales tax. S. AMERICAN TRIBAL ARROW
A very interesting TRIBAL ARROW which I think comes from South America. But am open to correction on that. It is 106 cm long overall, total arrow head length is 33 cm. The shaft is bamboo. The arrowhead is made of hardwood, the'tang' of which goes into the bamboo and is secured with plant resin of some sort. The arrowhead is a tapered 4 sided design. Large Authentic Antique Mexican Huastec Water Pot Handmade Pottery
Large Authentic Antique Mexican Huastec Water Pot Handmade Pottery Large Authentic Antique Mexican Huastec Water Pot Handmade Pottery This beautiful pot is an authentic ethnographic piece used by the Huastec indians in Mexico. The Huastec indigenous people live in a region called La Huasteca. Which includes portions of the states of Hidalgo, Veracruz, San Luis Potosi, and Tamaulipas. These pots were typically made in Hidalgo but were sold and used throughout all the Huastec indian communities. Huastecan pots are hand coiled and hand painted. This pot shows the expected wear and use of a true ethnographic piece. These pieces were not intended as tourist or decorative pottery. Pots like this one are no longer used since all communities are now able to have bottled water and plastic containers. Few, if any, of these may remain in use. A pot ... moresuch as this one was used to carry and store clean drinking water. These pots are hard to date but this one may be from the late 19th to the early 20th C. These large pots are sought after by collectors but also make excellent decorative accents for Southwestern decor. This water jug shows the wear. Salt deposits, and erosion characteristic of a used utilitarian artifact but it is in overall good condition. Provenance: From a private collection. Guaranteed authentic. Splendid Antique Pre-Columbian Stone Carved Sculpture of a Head
EUREKA ANTWERP ANTIQUES Beautiful antique pre-Columbian stone carved sculpture depicting the head of a man. Worrier. I don’t know very well how old the piece is because I do not know much or almost nothing about pre-Columbian art. What I know is what I found on the net. So I’m not a big specialist in this kind of pieces, but collectors will see what this is. This piece is coming from an old estate. This piece is in the condition as depicted. This sculpture is about almost 4 ¼” 11cm) tall. Take a look at the pictures these will tell much more than my description. I also do not know the value of this piece, so if my start is to low no problem it will go, if to high I will get reactions I hope. Important information to bidders! I have received more than one e-mail from eBay winners stating that the items which they have purchased from my ... moreauctions are much more beautiful in real life than depicted in the pictures. The shipping cost mentioned in the listing is an example for shipping from Belgium to China.
